You don't need to lay out thousands for food storage.
Find a bulk supplier and buy grains and beans for your core staples, making sure to put them up properly to protect from moisture, rodents, and insects (CO2, diatomaceous earth, or oxygen absorbers in sealed Mylar bucket liners). You don't even absolutely need a flour mill but it's a worthwhile investment. You can buy spices by the pound for huge savings.

In most countries fire arms are only reserved to the State or the criminals (which is the same thing.
It could be very (very very) hard to defend yourself or your family without them...
