Fear is the Font of CourageSubmitted by Michael Nystrom on Wed, 12/22/2010 - 13:28
In response to Is Anyone Getting *SCARED* Yet? I ask, What is there to fear? That they'll take all of your wealth and possessions? Put you in a cage? Torture you? Throw you to the dogs? Kill you?
Welcome to the human condition. It's been going on since the dawn of humanity. We all draw from a common lineage of ancestors who faced it, and unless we change things, our progeny will share the same fate.
There no question there is fear. The question is what to do about it.
The way through the fear is to face it. But first you must name it. Turn off the TV and think about it, with your own mind and your own voice, not through the mediated voices of Corporate News that have colonized all of our minds. Write it down, if you dare (or are you too afraid?).
It is okay to be afraid. But understand that is what 'they' (the oppressors) want. Manipulation though fear is a technique that is well known to those in power, through the ages. Fear makes the masses much easier to manage. People who are afraid will do anything they're told.
The threat of death is the ultimate pressure point, and the ultimate weakness for most humans. Threaten someone with death and you can get him to do nearly anything. (Do you want to end up in the wreckage of a plane that was hijacked, or in the rubble of a 100 story steel building that has mysteriously collapsed? Today's threat level is Yellow. Elevated. Are you scared? Then do what you're told!)
Fear of death is irrational because Death waits patiently for each of us. There is no way to avoid this fate. Yet we struggle and strain each day to deny it, making it the ultimate fear from which all others spring.
None of us gets out of here alive. The question is will we leave here with our dignity in tact, or go out blaming our fear on others, never truly knowing or understanding ourselves and the gift of humanity that we have been given?
Should we give in to the age old cycle of violence by turning others into scapegoats, then killing them in an attempt to temporarily assuage our fears? There is nothing much original in perpetuating that cycle, but the Powers That Be would like nothing better.
It is good to be afraid, because fear is the font of courage. Be thankful for your fear, for without fear there can be no courage. Fear is your opportunity to express courage.
Courage is acting in the face of fear, staring it down, accepting it, moving beyond it, and doing what you know is right.
Was Jesus Christ was without fear? Henry David Thoreau? Gandhi? Martin Luther King? Is there no fear in standing 434-1 against your peers?
Rather than wallow in fear, identify it, face it, purify it, and transmute it. Spread the courage, not the fear. Courage, not fear, is the way of all human growth and progress. It is the heroic journey of mankind.
