The DP, a melting pot of ideas

There has been a lot of talk lately about what type of posts should be allowed on the DP. Some feel that it should be purely stiff necked posts concerning just politics. Others are trying to post in a light hearted way that seems to some to be mushy.

I have observed over my years that the best ideas come from Individuals that can operate in an environment where they can Comfortably be themselves, an environment that does not inhibit who they are as the real person behind the screen name.

Is this not the environment we are all working towards and fighting for in all this? For the right that we all deserve to be who we are without inhibitions created by the powers that be or our own peers?

We must ask ourselves at some point, as peers, are we just being judgmental and picking apart some-one's real personality hoping to find something to discredit a screen name? Could this also be what another peer is doing to you? Could your own personal opinion of fault be stifling all the good an individual really does?

Please remember we all march to a different drum, if we are all allowed to beat our own liberty drums in our own way, all the cadences of different ideas will eventually come together on their own to become one very loud cadence that will be heard around the world.

Freedom and Liberty is the common message among our peers, yet how we choose to deliver the message is our own and should be appreciated and respected for what it is, from this will come the best ideas towards our common goal.

Please, do not be what someone else would like you to be, Do not create one face apart from your real face just to satisfy your peers, Just be you!

Some don't march. Others know to use flutes...

Yet others, clarinets or horns... It is our expression of Liberty that brings us together.

Thank you for your kind words.

Perhaps you might create a wholly different title. Melting Pot is not very Libertarian.

Melting Pot? Leaky Pot? Odd metaphor to represent us.

I picture something more like the Statue of Liberty. A beacon of Liberty has worldwide appeal. "We Come Together to Rebuild Our Republic."

Remind yourself, "I don't give a tinkers dam, about it!" That expression was commonly referring to a tinker (a metal potter; a metal pot repairman) & his dam (a dam block of metal to block the flow of molten metal, while repairing a leaky pot). A melting pot is not necessarily a desirable thing. A Melting Pot returns metal to its unformed state... politically speaking, Anarchy. Not good nor bad. To be used again if captured... behind a tinkers dams for example.

DailyPaul represents Dr Ron Paul's ideals & ideas to return to our Republic.

For background on why a Melting Pot or Leaky Pot is a mixed metaphor please note history is a mixed tale. "Melting" is more descriptive of Anarchy (an unformed state). We are working toward restoring our Republic.

'Encyclopedia Entries:

The melting pot is a metaphor for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous, the different elements "melting together" into a harmonious whole with a common culture. It is particularly used to describe the assimilation of immigrants to the United States; the melting-together metaphor was in use by the 1780s.

"Melting Pot:" Origin of the term

In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the metaphor of a "Crucible" or "Melting Pot" was used to describe the fusion of different nationalities, ethnicities and cultures. It was used together with concepts of America as an ideal republic and a "city upon a hill" or new promised land. It was a metaphor for the idealized process of immigration and colonization by which different nationalities, cultures and "races" (a term that could encompass nationality, ethnicity and race) were to blend into a new, virtuous community, and it was connected to utopian visions of the emergence of an American "new man". While "melting" was in common use the exact term "melting pot" came into general usage in 1908, after the premiere of the play The Melting Pot by Israel Zangwill.

The first use in American literature of the concept of immigrants "melting" into the receiving culture are found in the writings of J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur. In his Letters from an American Farmer (1782) Crevecoeur writes, in response to his own question, "What then is the American, this new man?" that the American is one who "leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He becomes an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater. Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world."

In 1845, Ralph Waldo Emerson, alluding to the development of European civilization out of the medieval Dark Ages, wrote in his private journal of America as the Utopian product of a culturally and racially mixed "smelting pot", but only in 1912 were his remarks first published. In his writing, Emerson explicitly welcomed the racial intermixing of whites and non-whites, a highly controversial view during his lifetime.

A magazine article in 1875 used the metaphor explicitly:
"The fusing process goes on as in a blast-furnace; one generation, a single year even-- transforms the English, the German, the Irish emigrant into an American. Uniform institutions, ideas, language, the influence of the majority, bring us soon to a similar complexion; the individuality of the immigrant, almost even his traits of race and religion, fuse down in the democratic alembic like chips of brass thrown into the melting pot."

In 1893, historian Frederick Jackson Turner also used the metaphor of immigrants melting into one American culture. In his essay The Significance of the Frontier in American History, he referred to the "composite nationality" of the American people, ... the frontier... a "crucible" where "the immigrants were Americanized, liberated and fused into a mixed race, English in neither nationality nor characteristics."

In his 1905 travel narrative The American Scene, Henry James refers to cultural intermixing in New York City as a "fusion, as of elements in solution in a vast hot pot.".

"Melting Pot" came into general usage in the United States after it was used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures and ethnicities in the 1908 play of the same name...

In The Melting Pot (1905) [Theater Production], Zangwill combined a romantic denouement with a Utopian celebration of complete cultural assimilation. The play was an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, set in New York City. The play's immigrant protagonist David Quixano, a Russian Jew, falls in love with Vera, a fellow Russian immigrant who is Christian. Vera is an idealistic settlement house worker and David is a musical composer struggling to create an "American symphony" to celebrate his adopted homeland. Together they manage to overcome the old world animosities that threaten to separate them. But then David discovers that Vera is the daughter of the Tsarist officer who directed the pogrom that forced him to flee Russia. Horrified, he breaks up with her, betraying his belief in the possibility of transcending religious and ethnic animosities. However, unlike Shakespeare's tragedy, there is a happy ending. At the end of the play the lovers are reconciled.

Reunited with Vera and watching the setting sun gilding the Statue of Liberty, David Quixano has a prophetic vision: "It is the Fires of God round His Crucible. There she lies, the great Melting-Pot--Listen! ... There gapes her mouth, the harbor where a thousand mammoth feeders come from the ends of the world to pour in their human freight." David foresees how the American melting pot... immigrants transcend their old animosities... into one people: "Here shall they all unite to build the Republic of Man and the Kingdom of God."

Zangwill thus combined the metaphor of the "crucible" or "Melting Pot" with a celebration of America as an ideal republic and a new promised land. The prophetic words of his Jewish protagonist against the backdrop of the Statue of Liberty allude to Emma Lazarus's famous poem The New Colossus (1883), which celebrated the statue as a symbol of America's democracy and its identity as an immigrant nation.
United States

The melting pot idea is ... the "Ellis Island" version of the "melting pot" narrative, equating the melting pot with the mixing of Euro-American immigrants, has been criticized because it overlooks the history of African-Americans, who came to North America mainly as slaves through the Atlantic slave trade.'

I dont give a tinkers dam,

I dont give a tinkers dam, lol. And that post reaks of wiki stink. :) Merry Christmas patriots!

"I don't give a tinker's dam!" We must fix our leaky Republic!

Tinker's dam is but a temporary block to hold molten metal, whist the leaky pot be fixed.

The "Melting Pot" metaphor to describe the United States seems to boil down to an unformed state. Politically speaking, Anarchy. Not good, nor bad... just un-formed mass.... A red hot molten mass.

The metaphor "Melting Post" creates a negative image about what is happening to the pot... its demise.

The Tinker's Dam channels molten metal mass to be captured & used later to rebuild the pot. Ah, but what kind of pot? Minor repair? Major repair? Shiny new?

Will it be our own worthy pot? Will it hold water? Will the Tinker fix our liquidity leak? Ah, the drama.

The United States has plenty of metal. Most elements on earth are metal. See table of elements.

We can fix our leaky pot.

We can fix our Republic.

Speaking of Melting Pot & Leaky Pot tain't nuff to fix our listing, sinking Ship-of-State.

Dr Ron Paul is guiding us to fix our Republic... Our Ship-of-State. Please help.

I am with you, Mark

A republic, if we can keep it!

Free includes debt-free!

Freedom is popular

as Ron Paul says. He says this when people ask him how his followers can all be so completely different from different walks of life. He says it is because freedom is popular. What we should all have in common if we are here, is the freedom to be who we are. As long as what we do does not hurt another, then we should be free to do it. So, even if I would not do something that you might do and you could never do what I do, we respect each others right to do it!

And that should be true in our discourse with one another upon subjects in which we disagree. We should be kind and respectful of the others position or beliefs even if we vehemently oppose them. The problem is too many people on the DP have not followed that rule. It does not matter where they are coming from, there is a lot of unkindness and outright rudeness that has occurred here. That should NEVER be so if we are truly a liberty-minded people.

I have grown from my time here. I have also been hurt and offended and it does tend to make me want to visit less. However, overall I have learned a lot and I appreciate all of the combined wisdom on this site. Just remember the Golden Rule.

"Welcome" it?

I accept that he has the right to post it, but I do not "welcome" such raw unkindness. I understand we are all human, and engage in it, but if we are endeavoring to bring about anything really good, we need to be a little choosy about what is welcome in our world and what is an unwanted intruder. Anger, hate, fear, etc are all "unwanted intruders" - especially when they are coming from me.

Mmmmm. That sounds nice.

I try to see what is. If there is good in it, appreciate it. If there is maliciousness, then I do not see value in whitewashing it. But that is me, based on my own capacity to be vicious. I can't really afford to tell myself there is good in it, it is really just being vicious.

Conversation is an art

Conversation is an art, the yet unwritten play, each actor authoring their own part.

Playwrights and writers may mimic conversation like the painter mimics his wonder of a starry night.

Sometimes conversation is a lot like painting a fence, everybody works to make sure the topic is covered.

In all of my relationships, I endeavor to create an environment where everyone can be themselves. I have found that being judgemental does not foster such an environment, and actually creates an environment of fear and anxiety. The fear of being judged and ridiculed in public will make just about anyone withdraw rather than engage.

I check in to DP far less often than I used to, and I look at the active forum topics and rarely find anything that is of interest to me. DP used to be THE site for me to visit in order to find out what's going on in the world. There used to be a lot of quality people sharing information here, people whose screen names I never see any more.

The personal attacks here just never seem to end, and I doubt that they ever will. It's just too easy to be a know-it-all/coward/bully in an online forum.

As an individual

there are so many times I'd like to be able to just cut loose on here, but as a part of a whole refrain now because of Ron Paul.

If I can do anything for him, it's to emulate his professional manner when in public....and the DP is a VERY public place compared to smaller forums, e-mail, blogs etc. where more personal conversations, beliefs and opinions can be exchanged.

Consider it good self management or self government or even having some self control out of respect for him since this site is dedicated to his name.

Absolutely Ms Kathleen

I agree,at no time should we stray from the guidelines or from professionalism,But in turn there are many that have to walk on eggshells due to criticism about their honest feelings toward a subject or how they deliver their feelings. Some are chastised for trying to bring happy posts and heightened morality to the board.I see no harm in this.We are not all one and the same.

This is not the time for feelings.

Its about the issue of etiquette.

I've asked myself the question "Has Dr. Paul ever embarrassed me?" The answer is no. In all the situations he's been in, he has always behaved and acted according to the time and place.

This may be something to think on, as he may be preparing to announce his run for 2012.

If this site bears his name and we are a representation of Ron Paul by the actions and speech here, then perhaps we'd better straighten up and get sober for the number of guests that are expected at this address.

There is no sense in even continuing this site if all we seem to do as his supporters is run around like a bunch of obnoxious, drunk, extremist, bigots.

Thats where FB and other places are for.

Here is some of what we have lost on the DP

There are 2 women about my age and who are very interested in peace and liberty who no longer come here, they do not wish to be around so much unkindness. I find myself going to other sites more and more often, and when here I am more and more inclined to simply keep my mouth shut. I learned SO much here, I am not at all the same person I was 3 years ago. There used to be "great awakenings" nearly every day here, so many of us were willing to dig and grow and unlearn and learn as needed... Now it is OK to demand conformity and engage in hours-long personal attacks against those who dare to be different. Well, and those who cannot be anything but different. There was a time when this was a place of open hearts and open minds, but when you are losing the grannies, you are losing something of real value whether you realize it or not.

"losing the grannies"

"Grannies" meaning grandstanders?

The ones who make the grand exits with a big F-U, but then return later, only to grandstand again?

The ones who conspire to keep each others posts at the top of the active forum topics because they think that their info is so much more important than everyone elses?

The ones that constantly self bump, or take advantage of the glitch on the DP, and edit their reply so that it goes back to the top, without looking like it has been self bumped?

The ones who wait until their post falls to the bottom of the page, and then reply so that it goes/stays back at the top?

The ones who seem to think that they are some kind of Oracle, or Prophet, or Messiah?

The ones who think they are sent here to Earth to save the human race, and that the DP is the only instrument capable of doing that?

The ones who think that the rules apply to everyone else but them?

The ones who play the "whipped puppy" game, when someone dares criticize their grandstanding?

Ohhh, you meant grandma's.

I know a couple of grandma's that are still here. I like grandma's.

Wow, that was very -... um...revealing?

You know, I am aware that you don't like me. I don't let that stop me from loving you, best I can. That was just uncalled for. You may not have the noticed that absence of the grannies I stay in contact with, they were quiet types. They don't like to be attacked for speaking up. I don't like it either, but I feel it is important to speak up anyway.

Happy Holidays to you, Jefferson. I hope you find a place full of love and beauty in your heart in which to dwell.

In all this I have to question the feeling some have that one topic is more important than another?I have watched political debates go on for three of four days with both sides repeating exactly the same thing but in different words. It is all good but what is the harm in someone trying to liven up the morale of the site once in awhile? morale is important to positive thought.
