How to See All Replies To Your Comments Ever

Do you use your tracker tab to look through every post that has new comments just to see if anyone replied to you?

Well, no more!
Introducing the...

Reply Watcher

On your profile page (click on "My Account"), there should now be a block under "Recent Comments" called "Recent Replies To Your Comments", which shows the latest 10 replies to your comments. It also has an (all) link by its title, to show you all the replies ever to your comments. It's kind of fun to go through these and see what you've missed over the hours/weeks/months/years.

As usual, I'm open to suggestions on improvements. I imagine this isn't quite right yet. Does the full-page view look ugly? Would you rather this be a small, permanently visible block on the right column? I make no promises, but your considerations may be viewed by people who can make such changes.

Enjoy! I know I will.

Jon, change/ Recent Posts / Reply Wathcher/

Jon,

2X "Latest Posts" reference /chrono/

  1. Change / Latest Posts / Chron Post /
  2. Move / Latest Posts / Show Reply /
(Take 2nd occurrence of Latest Posts, change title & move from under "Off Topics" to above "Log out")

well

no one hates duplicate content more than me, but that bold "Latest Posts" under off topic is the only way anonymous users know to access /chrono, because the user nav block (that starts w/"My account") is not visible to them.

I want to try linking to the reply watcher as a "Replies(0)" or "Replies(4)" entry in place of "Latest Posts" in the user nav block, which will populate based on what replies are actually "new!", as you suggested below.

Believe it or not, it requires custom code to do that for comments, though it is easily done with nodes.

Though I can't decide, should new replies consist of:

  1. JUST replies to one's comments
  2. replies to one's comments AND all comments in the nodes they authored?
  3. replies to one's comments AND all INITIAL comments in
    the nodes they authored?
  4. or replies to one's comments AND all comments in nodes they've bookmarked?

Some are volume posters, and probably don't care what everyone says in their nodes, so I'm leaning toward #1. But those who aren't, like me, might want #2 or #3.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Value in all of above: High 1... Low 4.

More irony than iron itself. 2X... Due to the guest view, you may get the most by changing "Off Topic" to...

Extended New Features!

  • Show Reply
  • Chron Reply
  • Off Topic
  • DP Improvement Project

Whatever cannot be used may be left out of view. Keep wondering to a minimum.

Per your wondering about #1, 2, 3, or 4, start with highest value for most, #1. Add as appropriate later. I deduce #1 as highest value... subsequent posters rarely back-track, down another branch.

I am delighted with the state of our DailyPaul now. These are suggestions, not requirement. Thank you.

Please add "Reply Watcher" between user ID & Log out

Dear Jon

Excellent work. I used "Reply Watcher" today. I used it with ease.

Please add a link to "Reply Watcher" over on the left side of our DailyPaul web pages. I reckon it would fit somewhere among User ID & Log out.

Else try:

  • "DP Off Topic" " "Reply Watcher"
  • Let it get some exposure there
  • When it proves its worth, it could be promoted to rise above "Log Out"

Suggestion: Show "New reply!" option. Include date stamp of reply.

Jon, this is a great invention

Revolutionary, really.

Thank you for opening this wonderful new portal on the Daily Paul.

I am enjoying it, too.

good job instead of saying

good job

instead of saying "profile page" you should probably say "my account" (or change the "my account" link to have "profile page" as it's text....

This is an excellent feature,

This is an excellent feature, I use it after I make a comment to see any feed back -- good or bad.

Nice addition

Thanks!

I don't have it on my page

Would like to see replies. I've been posting for a long time.

Wow

You don't have it do you!???

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

Cool!

Thanks!!! Great feature.

I offer these comments in the spirit of helping, not complaining:

The deep linking doesn't consistently work on my browser (safari) for some post, seeming the multi-page comments. It seems to find comments on the first page of comments only.

I'd love replies e-mailed to me similar to how facebook does it, or certainly the preference to do so.

Bookmarked for later--sounds great! And,

I don't know if you are responsible, but this site has been running very well the past few months.

Undo what Wilson did

Wow this is great.

Thank you Jon!

Thank you Jon

this is going to be a very helpful feature.

Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.

Another bug.

Great! I've wanted this for a while.

Bug: If the reply isn't on the first page of the article it takes you to the top of the first page instead of the reply on the later page.

(You can then hunt down the comment using your browser's "find" feature on a snippet of the text and trying it on all the later pages. But better would be for the link to just do the right thing and take you to the later-page comment directly.)

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Aha! A bug!

I was viewing the site with the "Demo DP Changes" colorized, ajaxified version, which I love -- and I got really frustrated trying to view this new feature, which sounds absolutely wonderful. I found nothing. I couldn't find a trace of it. Then I decided to try viewing the site in the "normal" format, and voila! there it was.

Jon, this feature really is great, but it would be even greater if it could be made compatible with the other changes available to us through the "demo DP changes" option you created. Can do?

should be fixed now.

Thanks. I forgot that was easy to fix.

I've been given the go-ahead to make certain options in the demo script opt-in w/o the bookmarklet, so I'm working on that next.

Also, YouTube has finally switched to embedding videos with iframes, which my script clips out to maintain its never-refreshed one-page nature...anyway, I'll have to deal with that too.

Lots of possibilities now.

On a scale of 10

This is an eleven Jon!!!.Very,Very great improvement to the DP.This will be one of the most used and important improvements that could ever been done here. Thanks!

Wow, Jon, thanks; that is really useful!

: )

LOVE IT!

Michael, please make sure to keep this Jon guy around!

(The only bummer for me was finding Thomas' recent reply to a post I made last year before my stepdad passed away from cancer... thanks for the reply anyhow, Thomas, and I hope the OP's uncle is faring well: http://www.dailypaul.com/node/120166#comment-1605497)

What a treasure

you are for the DP community. Thanks so much, especially from those who don't opt to be notified (creating inbox bloating) of every reply to every reply!

Joη's picture

wait, do you have that option?

Or...did you? Apparently some do and some don't. I never did. Someone else is trying to diagnose this strangeness, it'd help to know who does/n't have this option.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Well, once upon a time

I recall there was such an option box to check. . . or else my fuzzy brain is confusing DP with another blog place where I am an admin. . . but I am pretty certain at some point we could choose that here at the DP. But not now, at least not for me!

And I just spent way too much time looking at replies to my comments when I should have been sleeping! ;-)

Sweeeeet!

Thank you.

Thanks for the upgrade. Love it!
