ReasonTV: What Happened to the Antiwar Movement?

ReasonTV | January 20, 2011
Even as President Obama maintains close to 50,000 troops in Iraq and continues to escalate and expand the war in Afghanistan, the antiwar movement in America continues to shrink.

So, what happened?

Reason.tv visited two antiwar protests—one left-leaning, one libertarian—in an attempt to answer that question...

a lot of people here are complaining about

the fact that Reason seems to criticizes the Ron Paul anti-war protests because they also focus on the Federal Reserve. I know as you all that if we had no federal reserve, then we would not be able to wage the limitless wars. However, I understand there point in the fact that because we focus so much on the Fed, we alienate potential allies with the left. Lets face facts...a lot of liberals just don't understand the consequences of the Feds actions. While some liberals do oppose the Fed, many do not understand its currency manipulation. This is a result of the fact that most liberals still use Keynesian economics.

Just like we don't like going to one of their anti-war rallies where they say "Lets end the wars and use the money to pay for universal healthcare", they probably don't want to come to our rallies and here us bash an institution they no little or nothing about. That is why Reason was making the point that we are NOT a united anti-war movement when we should be if we want to finally bring our troops home.

The spin on war

I personally am against the injustice of war.

Diagnosing the cause of the war really does nothing. If the cause of this war is an unelected political agenda provoked by special interest that have total control and power over political representation policies that are a tangled web of lies then the people are powerless to stop the war. Ron Paul 2012 is the best we can hope for.

and then you die

What Happened Is That

We are two generations removed from Nam. These kids, who are of age that we were during the protest, are only interested in playing games on their gadgets. They are totally clueless.

Maybe they are not as full of sh-- as baby boomers

Who obviously did not mean it when they protested...as they spent the rest of their adult lives getting us into wars...including this one.

Guilty as charged...

We meant it, we have just forgotten.
I implore the young people to get involved and help bring this to an end. You didn't start the fire, but someone has to end it.

If we had pulled out yesterday, it still wouldn't have been too soon. Who is benefiting from the billions of $US we the people are providing?
This is way past enough. Get US out now.

I know....

I'm supposed to give "Reason" a chance. But then you see this and I just walk (no make that RUN) away from them... It's like they love to spite their audience...

Economic issues are at the

Economic issues are at the root of these problems. When people can't pay their bills, or are out of work, priorities change. The War has been going for a decade, with no end in sight. Bankruptcy is a clear an present danger to many Americans.

Poverty also aids the warmongers, as day to day survival consumes every waking moment, and apathy turns to despair.

"The United States can pay any debt it has because we can always print money to do that." — Alan Greenspan

This is an easy one to answer...

The democrat/liberal hypocrites are still GIDDY over Obama's election and since he can do no wrong in their eyes, the war isn't any big deal anymore.

The republican/Neo-Cons LOVE the endless war, so they're in 7th heaven by Obama's actually escalating the war with extra troops and very flexible and ambiguous exit dates.

So everyone is happy except the small remnant of liberty-loving, non-interventionist, Constitution following individuals like those on thie site.

We're just left out in the cold on this one.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

This is a good lesson

I think we all know what happened to the anti-war movement and it's the same thing that's going to happen to the "tea party". It's called the "toilet assumption" and it's an American classic.

My take on the anti-war

My take on the anti-war movement is that people simply wanted to give Obama a chance to end the war. Now that he hasn't you can see the more principled on the left are starting to call Obama out for what he is. Will it catch on? I don't know. If we don't see a Democratic challenger to Obama for 2012 probably not.

I was against war until ????

My number one Hero Barrack Obama was elected. Now I love war, On to Somalia !!!!!!

People just don't care about

People just don't care about the wars anymore, the economy is the main issue. Also MSM would never dare to question or critic Barry, so they don't discuss the wars and when they do...it's all good.

Trevor Lyman's picture

But the war and the economy

But the war and the economy are directly related.

well...obviously most people

well...obviously most people don't understand the connection between the two, plus many truly believe the terrorist are out there to get us because we are free and prosperous, so...

the Bush era anti-war movement was controlled by Democrats, soon after they got the power they shut down the logistic, financing, media support, etc.

Let's hope people will listen to Ron Paul this next campaign, but I doubt it...I can already see a painful Obama vs. Palin finale. I can clearly see another Obama term, this country is to stupid and divided to be able to make a smart decision.

What I didn't like about the

What I didn't like about the end of the video was how it criticized Ron Paul people for bringing in 'unrelated issues' like the Federal Reserve. What is sad to me is that people don't make the connection between printing money and paying for war with that printed money. It is fundamental to the equation.

Surely Reason can do better than this.

That being said, I think it is important to find common ground with the left and go out and protest with them against the war. But like the video shows, there aren't many of those left, either.

I don't know what the answer is. Sometimes I think things just have to run their course, the same way seasons must follow their course. After summer comes the fall, and there is no way to avoid it. Maybe humanity is just doomed - doomed to repeat its mistakes over and over and over and over and over again.

Honestly, I don't think anything will get people out to protest the wars until it hits home personally. And that is why I think the best thing to do is to make the connection between the Fed and foreign policy...

But then we're back to where we started.

Now seems a good time to pull out a Bob Dylan quote:

"Everything passes, everything changes, just do what you think you should do."

(You'll never find a Dylan video on YouTube, but this is a good cover of the song - To Ramona

Perhaps, the prophecy of Zechariah and others is really going to come to pass. Seriously good writing job. I would like to communicate with you, if so desire.

When you hear people say

When you hear people say "where were the republicans when Bush was spending like crazy" then answer, where are the liberals when Obama is continuing the wars...

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

well said...

many Dems now they attack Cindy Sheehan because she is exposing "their beloved Obama".

I think Reason fell down here, as they often do;

equating hard left socialists who want government force for all domestic issues, with libertarians who oppose the Fed because it feeds the government monster while robbing the people is an invalid comparison.
And since the wars couldn't exist without Fed phony money, the anti-Fed signs are not off base, though they could have been better phrased for outreach, as in: The Fed Funds Wars; then onlookers would better understand.

Absolutely right!
