Is It Strange That FEMA Wants to Buy 140 Million Packaged Meals with a Shelf Life Only 36 Months

http://cryptogon.com/?p=20093

I’m sure that there are plenty of reasons why this isn’t weird, but I’ll just make a note of it in case Coincidence strikes.

Via: Federal Business Opportunities:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) procures and stores pre-packaged commercial meals to support readiness capability for immediate distribution to disaster survivors routinely. The purpose of this Request for Information is to identify sources of supply for meals in support of disaster relief efforts based on a catastrophic disaster event within the New Madrid Fault System for a survivor population of 7M to be utilized for the sustainment of life during a 10-day period of operations. FEMA is considering the following specifications (14M meals per day):

- Serving Size – 12 ounce (entree not to exceed 480 calorie count);
- Maximum calories – 1200 and/or 1165 per meal;
- Protein parameters – 29g-37g kit;
- Trans Fat – 0;
- Saturated Fat – 13 grams (9 calories per gram);
- Total Fat – 47 grams (less than 10% calories);
- Maximum sodium – 800-930 mg;

Wouldn't efoods direct give them a deal?

The shelf life of their food is about 12-15 years.

Did FEMA order anymore guillotines?

as always...

good points Steve!

*sigh* Here we go again..

These are standard government logistical guidelines. The 36-month benchmark is not a specific request- it is a minimum guideline. By the time the order is completed in full (in this case it's a hefty one and takes time) the product must still meet or exceed the guideline. In other words, they are trying to make sure the stuff isn't expired upon delivery.

How ironic- the budgeting office is trying to make sure they aren't dumping tax money down the drain for bad product, and people are expressing concern over an expiration date.

I really begin to wonder about this site sometimes. All this worry over underwater body bags, equipment lists, even field rations for crying out loud, and if you stop and think, or have any military experience, you find that most of it is practical application. The Navy ships all carry supplies of maritime body bags as does the Coast Guard. If a ship sinks or there's a disaster at sea, they are used for corpse RETRIEVAL. Do you think bodies magically manifest themselves out of the shipwreck hull or something? Divers have to go in there and get them.

it's good to be on guard --

in world history people of many nations learned the hard way not to trust their leaders/governments...

Yes, I am well-aware of that.

However, are you going to focus your worries and fearful emotions so tightly that it becomes a blindfold of paranoia that ends up governing you?

This is not to say I trust any government, I can assure you I don't. But sometimes a cigar really is just a cigar if you only stop and think a little.

Be vigilant, yes, question, yes... but never allow them to rule over you because it is only the first piece of a solution, and you will burn out quickly. Keep it disciplined and moderated and make it work for you- don't put a hood over your own head.

good points...

good points -- Thanks.

anyways I am just putting the info on different subjects out there for the people and they can decide themselves what to do with this -- they can investigate or whatever...

Budget Cut Talk

Typical reaction when talk of budget cuts begin is to try and justify your existence by actually doing something. Poor FEMA, they don't have much to do between disasters, and this project probably kept a few committees busy, planning, for a while.

Plus, one must spend one's entire budget, or it will be reduced next year.

Not a "coincidence" but probably not sinister, either. This is the nature of bureaucracies. Private industry would probably have stopped it.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

From a "rawfooder" view, society lives on "fox-hole" food.

"Shelf life" surrounds us in a dirth of death. Homogenized and pastuerized, steamed, boiled, baked, fried, carmalized and chemicalized, all for shelf life.
"Most farmers face so many short-term challenges that it is difficult to invest in the long-term protection of the soil. Social and economic pressures force many farmers to “mine the soil” until the land is completely denuded and is turned into “badlands,” Stocking says.
Peak Soil, the Silent Global Crises

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

They must be awfully hungry.

They must be awfully hungry.

Well...

I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat anything with a shelf life any longer than that! Yuck! :p

when things get really bad...

...sometimes when I feed pigeons I think about all of them who were eaten by hungry people during World War II and other times.

Continental army under George Washington also was starving during one winter some even roasted rats over open fires and ate them.

Wanting?

Nobody said anything about wanting to eat them. If you had a choice between eating MRE's or starving, I suppose you would turn them down? :O)

My guess...

The directors uncles sisters baby daddy sells MRE type meals. They come with a ten year expiration date, but they can easily change it to three years. That way instead of stocking up once in ten years, they have to stock up 4 separate times.

Kind of like the car companies suggesting that you change your oil every 6 thousand miles, and yet the oil companies make you sound like a heathen if you don't change it every 3,000 miles. Or Toothpaste suggesting that you brush like 3 times a day. And don't forget to wash your hair every day...wash, rinse, repeat, and condition. It's all a racket.

sounds about right!
