Another step towards socialism
More centralized economic planning.
Truth about CFLs
Lot's of companies make CFLs.
Mercury emission by CFLs is less than the mercury released by the extra energy needed for a regular bulb if that power comes from coal.
If CFLs are recycled there is no Mercury emission.
CFLs can almost always be brought back to the store you bought them at.
The energy savings (money and environmental) are enormous.
CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp)
These bulbs contain mercury. That's the only way they can work. The mercury vapor reacts to electricity to produce the light.
This is another case of the cart before the horse. With rare exception, there is no safe way to dispose of these bulbs. They are ending up in landfills and lots of them are broken. The mercury is seeping into the ground and our water supplies.
A few states were fighting against the ban on incandescent light bulbs. Now they are backing away from it.
This is just another major government intrusion into our lives.
Please read this story and DIGG it.

I hate those stupid bulbs
Because they take so long to illuminate a room, you end up leaving them on all day.
I'm using one right now.
I'm using one right now. First time I turned it on it took several minutes to warm up but now it just goes on like a normal bulb. The light seems brighter per watt, too.
I was going to buy some more, but now I won't.
Don't try to shove you're products down my throat, GE.
Let's see
All business mandated by a central government while the means of production are privately held.
What economic model does this represent?
Fascsim.
You're On The Right Track
How's this for fascism:
"Companies such as Amsterdam-based Royal Philips Electronics NV, the world's largest light-bulb maker, and GE, seeing the determination by Democrats to act on energy legislation, helped Congress develop the lighting standards that will end the sale of incandescent light bulbs within a decade."

And recall that GE is a major defense contractor.
What -- bloated contracts to supply advanced weapons of mass destruction for use in unending global wars isn't enough for these people?
I will use candles!
Or get a home on the tips of the earth so I can be in the sunlight all the time year round.

Laddyboy
Seeing as how you hail from Mars, I have no doubt that you could successfully inhabit our polar regions with your superior genetics and technological skills.
But what's with the candles -- slumming?
Just Saw a Story On This
And I have some questions.
Fox news report said that incandescent light bulbs will be banned in six years to favor the new florescent bulbs.
The new bulbs don't work in many appliances and timers.
This bulb is made by GE. I would like to know if they have a patent on this -- I imagine they would.
If so, how do you feel about having one company's product mandated at the expense of all others.
This would appear to be a downright nutty law and a burdensome and anti-competitive one at that.

Freedom, a barbaric relic
Its like living through a bad nightmare. Now we have government mandating the type of light bulb we can use! Its seems to me that push is on to beat back the revolution as quickly as possible. Get ready to replace all the dimmer switches in your house, I have bunch. Maybe I can get a subsidy to replace them. By the way, Phillips Corp has got to love this as they have a virtual monopoly on CF bulbs.
There will stiff fines for people found using the old bulbs in thier homes or business and fines and/or imprisonment for anybody found dealing in the black market sale of these bulbs. Mark my words.
