Egyptian Jasmine Revolution ON! Hands off Protesters Mubarak!

As the world continues to witness one of the most remarkable processes of change in modern history, the Egyptian government today drew a line in the sand and forbade any more protests. The LA Times has reported:

Thousands of Egyptian protesters inspired by the revolt in Tunisia clashed with police in the largest anti-government demonstrations in years, flying banners and decrying political repression, corruption and unemployment under the three-decade rule of President Hosni Mubarak.

Mothers in hijabs and students clad in denim joined protests that flared in Cairo and spread to Alexandria and beyond, chanting "Freedom!" and "Down with Mubarak!" A police officer and two protesters were killed, authorities said.

Last week the world witnessed the breathtaking refusal of the Tunisian Army to fire upon its own people, resulting in the corrupt regime being driven from power as Tunisians put their foot down on rampant unemployment, rising food prices, poverty, and police repression. It was speculated that the "Jasmine Revolution" might spread to other parts of the Arab world, a revolution defined by rejection of both the corrupt ruling regimes and Islamic fundamentalism alike.

Next to Israel, Egypt is the second largest recipient of US military and economic assistance in the world. The Egyptian government receives about $1.5 billion per year.

Twitter, the Internet messaging service that has been one of the main methods used by demonstrators to organize, said it had been blocked in Egypt. Reports on Facebook are that hundreds of protesters so far have been arrested.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed support for the Mubarak regime. The United States as Egypt's principle financial backer is in a strong position to condition continuing aid to the Mubarak government on exercising restraint. Up to to the minute updates coming out of the country can be seen at the Facebook Egypts Protests 25 Jan 2011. This is an English language page. I have not been able to track down the main Facebook page for Sixth of April Youth. Anyone with family or contacts who can give link, appreciated.

In the meantime please contact Secretary Clinton's office and ask her to relay the message to Mubarak: HANDS OFF PROTESTERS!

Ladies and gentlemen, pray and bear witness to this momentous time in history. Let us now stand with the people whom our own government for much of post World War II history has so grievously wronged. Our government has lent military support to regimes who steal, pilfer, kill, torture, and keep their people in abject poverty despite ample natural resources, principally oil. This is our chance to, in some small way, make it right.

The protests will continue. The next move is the Egyptian government's. Last night President Obama in his State of the Union speech told the world we stand with the Tunisian people. We should stand with the Egyptian people as well in this, their hour of crisis.

REPUBLICANS ON THE HOUSE COMMITTEE WHICH CONTROLS AID APPROPRIATIONS TO EGYPT ARE:

* Kay Granger, Texas, Chairwoman
* Jerry Lewis, California
* Frank Wolf, Virginia
* Tom Cole, Oklahoma
* Mario Diaz-Balart, Florida
* Charles Dent, Pennsylvania
* Steve Austria, Ohio

Please call: "Tell Obama to warn Mubarak, hands off protesters in Egypt! Or no more money!"

"No videos of Dr. El Baradies arrival on Egypt. Al Jazeera reported that the government banned TV stations for videotapping his arrival."

Egypt protest leaflets distributed in Cairo give blueprint for mass action: Anonymous flyers provide practical and tactical advice for confronting riot police, and besieging government offices
UK Guardian:

"Egyptians have been urged to come out after Friday prayers tomorrow and demand the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak's government, along with freedom, justice and a democratic regime.

Anonymous leaflets circulating in Cairo also provide practical and tactical advice for mass demonstrations, confronting riot police, and besieging and taking control of government offices.

Signed "long live Egypt", the slickly produced 26-page document calls on demonstrators to begin with peaceful protests, carrying roses but no banners, and march on official buildings while persuading policemen and soldiers to join their ranks."

ecorob's picture

the people of the world...

are revolting relative to their various stages of governmental corruption

if you can't think it will happen here?
just hang on...

the question begs, to the ptb, will the police attack the citizens as they did in egypt or will they refuse to attack as in tunisia

of course, the politicians could "see the light" and stop the war machine and police state from draining this country's treasure
it is ALL their and, then ours, fault!
if they don't stop the madness and corruption, the corporatism and greed we, the people will

see egypt, tunisia, ireland, iceland, portugal...........

Mubarak's Son Flees Egypt, Police Fallback from Suez
By: Staff Reporter, Tom Bustamante
Last Updated: Jan. 26, 2011 - 4:58pm EST

(NEW YORK)--As protests continue to spread in Egypt reports now emerge that President Mubarak's son, Gamal Mubarack, has fled Egypt with his family to London, this on the heels or rumors that police in the city of Suez have pullback from the city under heavy pressure.

Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's son, who is considered as his successor, has fled to Britain along with his family, a US-based Arabic website reported.

The plane with Gamal Mubarak, his wife and daughter on board left for London Tuesday from an airport in western Cairo, the website Akhbar al-Arab said.

The video at the end of the OP

is freakin' awesome.

"Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and show the whole world that a Freeman, contending for liberty on his own ground, is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth." ~ George Washington

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." ~ Margaret Mead

They'll support Mubarak

They'll support Mubarak to the the bitter end, no question about it. The US and Israel hate democracy and will attack if things don't go their way in Egypt.

Sure, unless the Egyptian Army tells us

to go fuck ourselves and find another boy, the way the army did in Tunisia.

your right,

but it is great to see people with courage enough to stand up for what is right.

I wonder if Rand Paul

Could be convinced to add Egyptian aid to his long list of budget cuts, or at least make it an issue.
