Penny Bomb day to better gauge votes?
Submitted by tamckissick on Wed, 12/19/2007 - 15:55What does everybody think of organizing a single day where people donate a single dollar (a hundred pennys) per person? This will tell the official campaign who and where his supporters are (except the ones that have already hit the $2300 max) and we'll have an irrefutable account of votes. I can't see supporters not being able to afford this so totals should fairly well track support if it's advertised well enough.
Does anyone else wonder what the media would do with another big fundraising day of half a million or so where the average donation was just a buck?

How about January 1st 2008 for winning 2008 Presidentail campain
Donate either $20.80, $200.80 or $2000.80 ? count down for new years and money bomb!
It probably costs Ron Paul $1 in financh charges
from the merchant accounts per transaction.
It would be more sabatoge then anything.

Bad idea - High cost per transaction - helps opponents
could never capture every supporter for a long list of reasons

No, bad idea methinks, comments below say it all...main one
No, bad idea methinks, comments below say it all...main one being there are tens-hundreds-thousands of people you know, who do NOT sit on the screen all day so they will never have heard about said "bomb".
It wouldn't tell you anything, plus waste of funds etc etc as stated below.
IMHO.

Let's get this idea in the AIR! Anyone want to take this one on?
I have no web skills! But we could run this the entire campaign! Once a week, every Thursday...
I plug it on the show!

Personally, I believe this
Personally, I believe this information would be more beneficial to our opponents, than to the Ron Paul campaign.
My 2 cents.

If the official campaign
If the official campaign could put the minimum "break even" amount (or maybe a little more) up along with the other dollar amounts (the smallest amount listed is $25), or maybe even a significant number like 17.76, I think they'll get A LOT more new donors and the bragging rights that come with them...it will also lower the average donation/person, which also looks good. Like it was said below: a lot of newcomers are going to be a little wary of donating $100...they figure "he might not win, so why throw away $100? Let someone else do it!". But a nice low number? Only the truly lazy wouldn't do it then.
It wouldn't even have to
It wouldn't even have to advertised as a money bomb DAY. It could be over a longer period to give time for word to get around and the numbers of new donations to crescendo.
Won't work
Not all supporters will see the idea.
Not all supporters have credit / debit cards
Not all supporters are comfortable giving money over the internet
The numbers won't even be close to accurate.
total waste
they have got the numbers from the 16th it costs money to process credit cards its around 50 cent to a dollar not even worth the time especially if it turns out to be less
don't think it will help
I don't think so. First of all there is a transaction fee so having this would hurt the campaign, and I don't think this will do anything for media, as they say "money talks". Even the Tea Party was not covered well, don't expect anything from the media, we need to do this ourselves with paid exposure.

Let's confirm a minimum with the campaign...This is a good idea!
Even the kids can participate!
Remember the story of the kid giving a few cents...but it was all he had!
It's important to get as many new donors as we can to show that we have numbers! It will give us all more power!
If we decide to boycott...we have the numbers. If we do anything...we'll all command more respect and attention.
"W", who raised more than $350 million in 2004, a record, only had 350,000 or so donors for the entire election cycle!!! We could beat that in ONE DAY!!!!

I kind of like the idea...
Although I don't think there's much benefit to knowing how many voters there are. If anything, it'd give away the under the radar status and make other campaigns fight that much harder.
But... making a half million from dollar donations would create a big buzz.
Another problem, the Credit Card fees probably cost more than a dollar. So it'd cost the campaign money.
http://www.jimmyliberty.com loves Ron Paul
all of these Money inspired
all of these Money inspired event days are dividing the attention of what really needs to be done.
lets just focus on the message.
Agreed, but....
you have to admit that the biggest reason he's getting air time is the newsworthiness of the two record breaking money bombs. They show support that MSM didn't count on. This will do the same but hopefully include those that felt 100 dollars was more than they could part with. So instead of "$100 from 100,000 donors", we could shoot for "100 cents from 500,000 donors".
That is unless it's true that there is a $5 min c/c purchase via the internet. If so, what's an historically significant number around $5?
I've converted a couple dozen people to Ron's message but only got one to donate. They all said they'd vote for him but they're not giving a hundred bucks away.
Not good because....
Not good because with the credit card transaction fee of minimum $.35 and up it would actually cause them to lose money.

They already have a donor
They already have a donor count, and there's nothing that will make another mass-donation day any more telling that what's already been done - aside from another huge number of first-time donors.
Just my $.02.
Isn't "another huge number of first-time donors" the whole idea?
After all, the big question is how many people are supporting him and not being counted anywhere? How better to get them involved than a donation that won't hurt anyone's budget?
Surely a dollar donation will more than cover the Visa fee and the automated donation reporting? I think that news like this will provide valuable information as well as more favorable news. It just smacks of 'by the people' in my book.
What it doesn't do, though,
What it doesn't do, though, is tell you who may have dropped off or who didn't even know about this special event, and donations do NOT necessarily equal votes. They're nice numbers that certainly indicate support. But the stated goal was to find out the number of votes.. and this won't tell you that.
Basically all it will do is give a general sense of the number of votes, and my point was that we already have that... and have it each time someone donates.. so there's not real benefit to everyone donating on one day or just collecting the data as they go.
Don't Waste Time and Effort
Think about it. Somebody has to make sure your $1 gets added to your total to make sure they comply with FEC laws and aren't committing a felony. Even if the process is automated, I'm sure they pay a fee to use the service, possibly even a fee per transaction.
And then they have to send out the thank-you cards, etc. Paper for printing reports, bandwidth; you get the idea. They have to check and make sure the credit cards weren't stolen.
This is why it's not a good idea to artificially break your contributions into smaller parts. It clogs the works. It's inefficient.
Have patience. The election will get here sooner than you think.

No can do
You cannot donate less than $5.00 through the internet..I tried. Second the credit card transaction fee is around $00.90...so it would be worthless really.
