The Atlantic: When Ronald Reagan Endorsed Ron Paul

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/02/when-ron...

Ben Smith of Politico has identified what he predicts will be the "best campaign ad of 2012." It will be a Haley Barbour spot featuring something any GOP hopeful would kill for: Ronald Reagan's endorsement, which he bestowed during Barbour's 1982 Senate campaign. Here's Reagan:

I'd like to take a moment to talk with you about our country's future and a very special leader - Haley Barbour. The problems of the 1980's are rapidly changing and demanding new solutions and fresh vigorous ideas. I've learned first hand that Haley Barbour has the intelligence, courage and experience to make a great United States Senator. These are difficult times but slowly and surely we are making America prosperous again. With leaders like Haley Barbour we can look to the future with confidence and hope.

I agree that will make a compelling ad. But I wouldn't award the Oscar just yet. That's because the 2012 GOP primary will quite possibly feature two Reagan-endorsed candidates, and just as many Reagan endorsement ads.

Ronald Reagan was a Big Government Protectionist

I can forgive Ron Paul, a young congressman, for falling for Reagan in the '70s. For anyone to do so now demonstrates a dreadful ignorance of history.
Ronald Reagan vastly expanded the budget, welfare and warfare, got us entangled in foreign governments, strengthened regulations, piled mountains onto the debt. His record as governor was just as bad. Reagan was all talk and no walk. I doubt he even understood the words that came out of his mouth.

The article is somewhat of a poison pill

The author deliberately mischaracterizes Ron Paul's noninterventionist foreign policy as isolationist:

"...Paul had been locked in a tough primary battle and his isolationist foreign policy had come under attack from Republican rivals trying to paint him as weak."

Also, the article implies that Reagan's endorsement of Dr. Paul was a more a matter of loyalty, rather than one of mutual ideology:

"Paul had been an early Reagan supporter and led the Texas delegation for Reagan at the 1976 Republican convention. So when he needed some help, Reagan was happy to reciprocate."

I agree

This continual Republican Party mis-characterization of Dr Paul's noninterventionist foreign policy as isolationist is used often simply because they can't justify their support of interventionist force Constitutionally.

They have to attack the Standard-bearer simply because they know that it's not politically wise to show their open contempt of the Standard itself.

There are many reasons why Reagan's image as a conservative ought to suffer much more criticism than he receives. Not so with Dr. Paul, and they all know it.
