Reagan was a Big Government Liberal Democrat

I can forgive Ron Paul, a young congressman, for falling for Reagan in the '70s. For anyone to do so now demonstrates a dreadful ignorance of history.

Ronald Reagan vastly expanded the budget, welfare and warfare, got us entangled in foreign governments, strengthened regulations, piled mountains onto the debt. His record as governor was just as bad. Reagan was all talk and no walk. I doubt he even understood the words that came out of his mouth.

He's certainly not 'perfect'

But would you say we would have been better off without him?

I'm not sure how I would answer. I think we was helpful on domestically, even just for planting the ideas in the minds of Americans, and taking into account what you've posted above. But in terms of foreign policy the guy was a quasi-maniac (though I do believe that he was truly interested in nuclear disarmament, even if it never happened).

So what would you say? Not perfect, but still helpful? Or a hindrance to the cause of liberty?

Totally counter-productive. He was more than 'not perfect', he hugely expanded the budget, regulations, etc. and failed to do anything of relevance to cut the size of spending. What he did do was nullify conservative and free-market opposition to government activity, much as Obama has silenced most of the anti-war left.

Remember back when grandpa was excited that Reagan was voted in because he campaigned that he would put an end to the Dept. Of Energy. He didn't (obviously). That really ticked off grandpa. Still does.
