Diet Soda and Aspartame: "Rumsfeld's Plague"

The latest study on diet soda is just another nail in the coffin of the artificial sweetener Aspartame.

But the real question is how it ever got on the market in the first place.

In 1981, Rumsfeld of the newly elected Reagan administration told the FDA to stand down when they were going to ban it from going on the market.

Apparently the manufacturer of Aspartame contributed a lot of money to the campaign and told Rumsfeld it was time to return the favor.

Now it is in over 600 products on the market and poisoning people the world over daily.

Just another reason Rumsfeld should be in prison. We know about his war crimes but this was one of his "peace" crimes.

I have not posted here in a while, but feel compelled to share.

In 2004 my wife died of a brain tumour. She was 33 and had been using Aspartame regularly and heavily (in the form of diet "soft" drinks) since she was a teenager.

In 2006 her father died of a brain tumour. Although he was much father along in years he started using Aspartame when diagnosed with Diabetes in mid life to sweeten his coffee and tea.

Both the lifestyle and diet of the two people above were quite different. It is also worth mentioning that they were not blood related - she was adopted.

"Sweet Misery" is a fairly informative and worthwhile video to watch.

Take care and all the best.

Thanks for the front page Michael!

I really think this is a major issue. They have known the danger since its introduction 30 years ago.

Some posts on here are arguing with the study and claiming they use Aspartame with no ill effects.

But let's put the science and the studies aside for a moment, and just listen to our instincts about a product completely manufactured in a lab.

Do you really think stuff like this was meant for us to consume?

My inner voice telling me what is and is not good for us says no. Your body does not know how to handle this stuff.

At least cane sugar (NOT high fructose corn syrup) is refined from a sugar cane. Sure it is a refined sweetener, but other than that it comes from the actual cane itself - not made up in a lab.

Ron Paul addresses this in his book "The Revolution."

He explains why they quit using pure cane sugar in soft drinks (mostly cost) and substituted high fructose corn syrup-another health destroying ingredient (but still not as bad a Aspartame).

So if you drink soft drinks, look for those with cane sugar first. As long as you don't overdo it, a few sodas won't hurt you.

But I would avoid Aspartame at all costs.

No thanks.

"But let's put the science and the studies aside for a moment, and just listen to our instincts about a product completely manufactured in a lab."

No thanks, pawnstorm, I'd rather not put the science aside. This isn't a moral question, it's a purely scientific one: Is aspartame harmful to humans?

And what relevance does "manufactured in a lab" have? Are you discounting most of modern medicine? Do you not realize various medications "manufactured in a lab" have increased life expectancy by decades? "The lab" increases food production efficiency, increasing the availability of food and lowering costs so that more, less fortunate people are able to eat reasonable portions. "The lab" is a function of the free market, catering to the demands of the consumer.

There is a time and place to listen to one's instinct or feelings, such as an emergency situation or making moral decisions. Determining the safety of chemical compounds in various human biological systems is not such a time.

Sucralose and Stevia are not comparable, though.

The media tends to blanket-hit "sodas" instead of specifically calling out aspartame and corn syrup.

Stevia tastes gamey, but it's probably 100% healthy. Sucralose is basically industrial sludge, but it's probably mostly harmless. (Although it does have an unpleasant tendency to produce diarrhea.)

Sorry guys, but this is

Sorry guys, but this is unscientific nonsense. Yes, if you cook aspartame, it turns into something like formaldehyde, but even if you did heat up a diet soda on the stove and drink it, it would likely only give you an upset stomach. Who's cooking diet soda, though?

I guess just make sure to tell people not to use it in baking; tell them to use something like sucralose (Splenda) instead.

We should all be upset at the approval process this went through (and we should abolish the FDA), but let's let the science speak for the product. Anecdotes of people having headaches or getting dizzy, or the best one: deterioration of eyesight at older ages (lol), are not very useful data points; they are confirmation bias, at best. What about the millions and millions who drink diet soda every single day and see no side effects whatsoever?

not a very convincing

not a very convincing article. I've been dieting and eating large quantities of aspartame the last few years with no problems.

FYI

I drank Diet Coke 2L/day for 20 years. No issues that I noticed, but the concern is real just as it is for fructose. The latter makes one fat besides being a liver toxin.

I quit tobacco and Diet drinks partly because I want another 30 years to see how the R3volution turns out.

METHANOL (AKA WOOD ALCOHOL/POISON) (10% OF ASPARTAME) Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. People may recall that methanol was the poison that has caused some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.
The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a "food" product such as Jello).
Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

Well, we don't want

to ban things from the market though, do we? That's not very Ron Paulian. :-)

Aspartame is bad news, though.

Interesting Paul_S. I assume those are pawns!

The name "Pawn-Storm" is a term used in the game of chess. It refers to a strategy in which you attack a position with several pawns at once.

Pawns are the weakest piece on the chess board but there are more pawns than any other piece.

You start the game with 16 pieces. Eight of them are pawns.

They have very little power on their own. But used in numbers, they can "storm" a position and break through.

There will be carnage and many pawns my "die" in the attack.

But they can break through a stronghold and allow your other forces to get to the enemy king.

A pawn-storm certainly can fail if not done right...Then you most likely will lose the game.

Somehow I equated our movement with this concept, hence the name I chose.

I just wish we had the same ratio in numbers in real life that exist on the chess board.

But we ARE growing!

In essence we (the average citizen) are pawns in the political game, but together, we can storm positions of power and change the outcome if we are not happy with how we are being treated!

When I saw pawnstorm12 I thought

We need pawns from both sides to equal 12.

I've been independent my whole life, like my father before me. I am conservative in that I want to conserve traditions that are healthy and wholesome. I am liberal in that I demand the liberty to discern and dismantle what is hurtful and demeaning.

I see the American Revolution as a pawnstorm, as was Gandhi's free India movementm, the Civil right movement of the 1960s and now in Egypt. In each case people reject power over others for the bliss of liberty for all.

As a pawn myself, a mere hobbit. if you will, I thought, cool nym. And now your reply confirms my thinking, thanks pawnstorm12.
