Presidential Emergency Alerts Are Mandatory On My New Phone - UPDATED

Apparently new Smart Phones are coming pre-installed with an Emergency Alert application which includes the following alert options:

  • AMBER Alerts (Child Abduction Emergency)
  • Extreme Alerts (Extreme Threat to Life and Property)
  • Severe Alerts (Severe Threat to Life and Property)
  • Presidential Alerts (Presidential Alerts are mandatory)

All options can be turned off except the last one. On top of that there is no way to uninstall this app.

I'm so happy the President will be there in my pocket to keep me safe when I need him most.

Holy 1984.

Oh, and what sort of emergencies does the President have?!

Oh, and what sort of emergencies does the President have?! I can imagine:

PRESIDENTIAL ALERT: President Obama inspects tornado damage repair work by teeing off at the re-greened Tuscaloosa golf course.

PRESIDENTIAL ALERT: President Obama is sitting down to a banquet of cracked crab and lobster with Jeff Immelt and Jamie Dimon.

PRESIDENTIAL ALERT: President Obama is being entertained this evening by Fifty Cent and Whitney Houston.

"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"

Drudge Headline Bump

Posted this back in February, looks like the government is taking advantage of all the OBL hysteria to announce its next Big Brother program.

If you don't want the

If you don't want the software on your device you might be able to find a modification/hack online that will enable you to remove it.

Alerts aren't too bad

The Amber alert has at least proved its worth

Until something's not optional. That gets my oppositional defiance disorder on.

wait until 2012, if Ron Paul wins most likely you will demand daily massages form the White House :)

Android

If Android is the operating system on your phone, it won't take but a week or two for the hackers to remove the alerts. Just keep searching the Android forums.

The message will come as SMS or Text. How do you block SMS from your cell carrier?

"Presidential Alert".

Is that when they send us messages that he's violating the Constitution?

Now I know he's playing for the corporate phone makers

Do you realize the jump that will occur in phone sales, when that feature goes active and a message comes across and 150 million phones go flying off bridges and into lakes?

You will not be able to opt out of the Presidential Alerts. Also it is not software it is sent via Text message so disabling it by rooting or other methods appears to be a mute point. Is there a spam filter for text messages?

Then don't buy a smart phone.

Hit them where it hurts.

Fact.

"But everyone else has one?I gotta have one too".

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

Why shouldn't people

be able to buy a product absent intrusion from government? I don't even have texting as part of my cell package. Do I need to purchase it, are they going to charge me .50 every time the President wants to send a text?

Who knows why an out of control

tyranical government does what they do? How can we explain government groping and xray porn at the airports on grandma?
How do we get to the point where the government steals our money, and then gives it to their friends? How is it that we have been in perpetual war most of this century? Yet Americans just keep taking the abuse.

That Sounds Like It Will Backfire

Several consequences come to mind, first among them being that in an emergency, everyone is advised not to use the phone so that those in need can get through.

I'm So Glad the Hackers are on Our Side!

It's fabulous that we have so many talented deconstructionists who understand how systems work, and how to get around the faulty defaults!
