Sen DeMint Introduces Bill to Repeal Incandescent Light Bulb Ban

On Thursday, Republican Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming introduced legislation to reverse a 2007 ban on incandescent light bulbs that is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2012.

The Better Use of Light Bulbs Act (BULB) is intended to repeal the amendment that was attached to a comprehensive energy bill signed by President George W. Bush in 2007. The ban on incandescent light bulbs was intended to save energy and limit pollution.

“Americans are fully capable of choosing the best way to light their own homes and what best fits the needs and budget of their families,” said DeMint. “When Congress dictates which light bulbs folks in South Carolina must buy, it’s clear the ‘nanny state’ mentality has gotten out of control in Washington.”

Yeah! Hope it goes through...

You should read the instructions on what to do should one of the CF bulbs break in your house - it's really scary stuff.

Let there be light bulbs!

I remember the first and perhaps only time a law was ever passed that increased my freedom. Texas made it legal to turn right on red. True, the lights were not banished, and there was an asterisk about stopping first even when turning right, but I was stoked. I went for a long drive and turned right on red dozens of times.

Call you congress critter. I need my Edisons! The toxic CFL contraptions are heinous.

I will keep a light on for you.

How about bringing back our old toilets

while they are at it?

But I Was Counting on a Black Market in Bulbs

I stocked up on a few to sell on eBay, darn it.

I notice that when the ban on 100 watt bulbs went into effect this year, they started selling 95 watt bulbs.

Silly politicians.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

Janet will not permit it

DHS will force ebay to put a one-click on the page to report you. See something, click something.

lOl, you'll have a lifetime supply

: )

95 watt bulbs!

OMG, but, but incandescent

OMG, but, but incandescent light bulbs will raise the global temperatures (especially during the summer), will raise the oceans levels and melt the North Pole !!!!

lol oh no!

incandescent light bulbs are the only ones that work outdoors in cooler climates. They take time to "warm" up, forcing you to to just accept that you can't see for about 5-10 min outside while the CFL warms up.

Also in the restaurant business, incandescent bulbs are the only ones that will work in freezers.

I always had the feeling that this would never stick

The democrats got good feedback from the liberals when they passed this bill and now the conservatives will be tickled
pink with the republicans for abolishing it.
Just keeps the divide going.
I'm happy to see them introduce this bill but it won't change my lack of trust of DeMint.

I hope it passes; I absolutely refuse to use mercury-laden light bulbs. Even if they weren't mercury-laden, I will admit, still I would not use them...reason being because 'someone' thought they had the right to tell me that I must...
No! It is my right to choose how I light my home...

Don't be too hasty, didn't he

Don't be too hasty, didn't he vote for the Patriot Act?

not only once, he has voted

not only once, he has voted yes on it multiple times, including the most recent vote. He also voted for the bailouts. Every once in a while he might to something good, but when you boil it down, he voted to take away the 4th amendment, and also he voted to steal our money and give it to the banks. He is a traitor.

It's not one of the specified

It's not one of the specified powers of the federal government to save energy or reduce pollution. It IS one of the federal government's duties to protect us from invasion.

Why do you suppose that our politicians are unhappy with their job descriptions?

It takes MORE energy, not less to use CFLs than incandescent

Case Incandescent:
pennies to manufacture
nickles to operate each day
pennies to dispose of

Total energy 100%

Case CFL:
2 dollars to manufacture
2 pennies to operate each day
2 dollars to dispose of

Total energy 139%

Besides, if we mandate CFLs, the people will get accustomed to their high price and there will be less incentive for LED bulbs to bring their price down.

Think about it for a second.

Congress actually passed a "law" that tries to tell us what light bulbs we can use.
Now it needs to be repealed, when it should never exist in the first place.

The idea that they actually think they can tell us what light bulbs to use, is so far gone, that I don't even think I can relate.

Someone should put together a spoof of that old Ford commercial of the late 60s. The problem: with all the sophisticated technology, the light bulb wouldn't go on!

I appreciate anyone that tries to rollback the madness

I thought the war on incandescent light-bulbs was ridiculous from the start. What's next, a war on double-ply toilet paper???

don't give them any ideas! I never understood why people buy 1ply TP... it takes the same amount to get the job done no matter how many plies.. if it were 10 ply, it would prob only take 1-2 sheets..!

GEE THANKS you two. Next thing you know they'll be banning TP

all together and making people install bidets or using water buckets like in India and then everyone will start greeting each other with a left handshake instead of the right. But that really sucks for people who eat with their right hand. (how DO they manage that in India?)
