I just published a book [IRL-RPG: Player's Guide] to teach other (nerds) how to manage their lives and finances

I think the book is very libertarian minded. I even include a section about Political Affiliation and involvement. I also self-published it as independent publisher.

The book/game is basically a role-playing game (like D&D or World of Warcraft) in which the Player's Character is themselves.

Not sure if this is something you guys would be interested in knowing about, I post on this site quite a bit and like to share what I've been working on. Plus now I will be spending more time on my websites, YIPPY!!

Awesome Idea

As somewhat of a veteran in the field of pencil and dice games turned adult, this is an awesome idea. It funny because from times to times i find myself making parallels from my life to rpg's when im bored. It helps put distinct borders around abstract ideas sometimes and i like to guess what class my friends would be(they all tell me im a bard for sure) But when im lazy i like to think "man, my character wouldnt just be sitting around, there's adventure to be had" and it gives a little nerdy motivation. All the world is a stage i guess.

fortune favors the bold

We hope this really does inspire people

We started playing with this idea after we started playing a financial board game (Cashflow!) and used the game sheets to track our own finances. I ended up funding a trip around the world in 3 months (for 3 months around the world).

After a while I started using D%D sheets to track my stuff, then during a phone call a couple years ago the name of the game came to me and me and my friend Dan started developing it. The Player's Guide is the basic game structure, we are going to be putting out more books with more RPG concepts translated to real-life and the game mechanic.

We are still trying to figure out how to get the word out. We've only sold a few books so far, hopefully once those people start getting into the game it'll spread a bit more. We are also working on doing some video info-mercials for it (should be fun to make). Been posting on some forums and working on our website: irl-rpg.com

I think this idea will help bring a lot of people into the present and living moment, and help them prioritize their lives a bit more. Being Self-Published, we don't have a huge media blitz. It's going to go grassroots to get going.

This is a good idea. I've

This is a good idea. I've often noticed that the original D&D had some concepts that could apply to real life - it always made me and my friends want to program databases for instance. Likewise, I remember an old mud game with some similar ideas applicable to real life (find something profitable that you can keep on reproducing to get rich for instance).

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

so now dice?

do you just do real life activities to move forward in "the game" like...

---- participate in a political rally
---- start a business
---- buy a stash of silver or gold
---- etc...

and when you do these things, you "advance"?
Or is it a game that uses real world situations that mimic or parallel, the real world? So in essence, its like a RPG for a "real life" (or contrived made up one) Say like sim city where your the mayor of a town, etc. ?

read the website, but was still a bit confused.

Exactly!

You advance by advancing in life. It is basically a way to rate and set goals. We created game systems (Stats, Proficiencies, etc) that use real achievements to advance in. For instance, to get Rank 15 in your Political Science Proficiency you need to either get a degree in Poli Sci or get a Job in the field.

There is absolutely no simulation. The Player Classes (Druid, Ranger, etc) are used to add character and fun to the game, so someone who is really into gardening would be a Druid, a businessman may be a Trader. etc. You then level up in your Class by advancing in your Stats, Proficiencies and Budget.

There will be more to the game (like all RPGs) as they develops and we release more books/additions. I'm still adding content to the site in between work and sleep. Thanks for giving it a look, hope this helps explain it better.

The principle of "leveling

The principle of "leveling up" is something I learned to apply to my life at a very young age. I always wondered why this type of thing was never done before. It seemed like such an easy way of understanding how the world works. I totally just ordered a copy.

Thanks!

Awesome, can't wait to hear what you think. You just made my day!!!

Tight man. I do like music. I actually play some sort of Punk/Country/Folk music, not sure how to describe it. Still working on my performance skills, playing open mics and such.

I dig your message and what you are promoting with your label/music.

I put this list together for my friends to help them get their music online: http://yourspacebook.com/ecommerce/howto-copyright-promote-a...

Also check out flattr.com - It's still an evolving platform for distribution.

Does flattr actually turn

Does flattr actually turn into decent exposure?

flattr = very new

"I don't worry about 2012, I worry about 2010, only got a couple months left." - word!

Flattr is still pretty new, not a huge user base. I made like 2 euro from a few clicks a couple months ago. Not huge, but has a lot of potential. We need more active people on it.

alright. I'll sign up and

alright. I'll sign up and try it out. Seems fun at least.

It's a great, creative idea. I'm not a

game player, not a potential customer. Please excuse this outsider offering a critique of your product description at your 2 links.
Perhaps intentionally, your description is very vague. It would be hard to get a sense of the game; I'm not sure that will lure enough customers.
It's often suggested that writers give emphasis to concretes over abstraction. just a thought you might consider.

Great feedback.

I've been wondering about that. Not sure how I want to go about that, but it's good to know which direction I need to head in. Thanks for checking/commenting it out!!!

Having once been an addict

of Ultima Online that book sounds interesting. Do you have some samples?

I played for about 6 years from 1998 to 2003 and had amassed quite an account. They nerfed the game system several times so one day I logged on, found the first noob I came across and gave him all my UO possessions and never played again.

There is preview button under the cover on the lulu page

It's not the most well presented "Preview" button, but it has the intro page, one of the Player Sheets and a sample of the Statistics and Classes.

There should be a link to a preview pop-up underneath the cover image (on the left side). They need to rip off amazon.com a but more with their layout.

AND the game promotes Gold and Silver

And Copper. I'm currently setting up a page on the website (irl-rpg.com) to link people to the AOCS Mint.
