Updated! Texas Protecting Dignity in Travel Bills

One of the overlooked elections this last cycle was David Simpson's win for State Representative from the Longview, Texas (HD 7). David is one of us!!!! He defeated a Republican incumbent, who was considered a safe seat.

Protecting
Dignity in Travel
& Prohibiting Unreasonable Searches
HB 1937 Indecent Groping Searches
HB 1938 Virtual Strip Searches
HCR 80 Unreasonable Searches

Background
• The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began deploying 450 units of advanced imaging technology (AIT) with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2010.
• Commonly referred to as full body scanner technology, AIT produces images of
the body using two different systems.
• Millimeter Wave AIT uses uses non-ionizing radio frequency
energy in the millimeter spectrum to generate a threedimensional
image of the body based on the energy reflected
from the body.
• Backscatter X-ray AIT uses a narrow, low-energy x-ray beam that
scans the surface of the body at a high speed. The machine then
generates an image resembling a chalk etching. The image is displayed
on a remote monitor for analysis to determine whether objects are
present.
• The scanner virtually strips the traveler and generates a nude image of his or her
body.
• Allegedly, these invasions of privacy are completely voluntary. In lieu of the offensive
screening, any traveler is welcome to subject themselves to a “pat down.”
• Multiple reports across the nation indicate the pat downs are not your standard "the
metal detector went off, wanding routine."
• The pat downs, initially begun with a TSA agent, wearing latex gloves, using theback
of his hand to feel through a traveler’s clothes around sensitive areas of the body have
evolved into instances of hands down the pants, inside the underwear, groping
of private parts. Treating Travelers as Criminal Suspects without probable and as a
condition of travel violates Section 9 of the Texas Bill of Rights and 4th Amendment.
In recognition of these protections I have Piled three pieces of legislation.
• HB 1937 would create a criminal offense in Texas statute for a person to touch
specific private areas of the body during a search unless there is probable cause
that to believe the person committed an offense.
• HB 1938 would prohibit whole body scanners that depict the “virtual strip” images in
airports in Texas.
• HCR 80 is a concurrent resolution expressing the Legislature’s strong oppositionto
unwarranted and unreasonable searches by TSA and urging the administration to cease them immediately.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.

Bump! and thanks for the smile...

I love C.S. Lewis, My 5 and 10 year olds are reading The Chronicles of Narnia, and they love them.

But that man should play the tyrant over God, and find Him a better man than himself, is astonishing drama indeed!~~D. Sayers

I learned to read with the chronicles of Narnia. That said, I'm not too impressed with Lewis's theology after I have grown up. A lot of conservative Christians feel that way. I probably got moved into that position after comments by several out and out pagans about Lewis's works - God works in mysterious ways.

With that said, Lewis's Screwtape letters are probably ok. He does a mean devil.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
