Homegrown Revolution - Radical Change Taking Root

Since the early 80's the Dervaes family has slowly transformed their ordinary city lot into a self sufficient urban homestead.

Homegrown Revolution (2008) is a film short that gives a brief introduction to the Dervaes Family's urban homestead which they call "Path to Freedom." On this tiny city lot, a beautiful and productive oasis was created, producing 6,000 lbs of food annually and is a model of urban sustainability.

HOMEGROWN REVOLUTION - Radical Change Taking Root

Path to Freedom presents 'A Homegrown Revolution' A collaboration of selective media clips which feature their urban homestead and farm which focus on the need of radical action -- growing food in the city.

This self produced, short music video was shown at Peter Seller's Cultural Art's class at UCLA followed by a short presentation by urban farmer, Jules Dervaes founder of Path to Freedom. The class focus was on the art of slow food and among other guests invited were Michael Pollan, Alice Waters and Eric Schlosser.

Like Victory Gardens of yesteryear, start your own homegrown revolution, grow your own food in your back or front yard -- for more information visit the urban homesteaders at http://www.PathtoFreedom.com

We are doing this

We have about 1/8th of an acre and after the house, we are using it as garden space. We also have arrangements with friends, family and neighbors to use their proerties for growing as well. For good seed, www.rareseeds.com.

in my email, because of my living off grid, and they have very good articles for many things. However, I just received an ad from them for changing my cell phone server because they gave to Rand Paul and other tea partiers, and that I should join their cell provider as they are progressive. I told them what I thought, and maybe you would like to also. Here is the ad in a browser http://motherearthnewsmail.com/form/motherearth/viewhtml/9z1...

That is really cool. Hope

Hope those folks spend a little time practicing how quickly they can reload an ak47. In a city like LA, that place would be a prima target in a SHTF scenario - and it wouldn't take nearly as much S to get the folks in that city going! LOL!

I saw this posted here a couple years ago. Nevertheless, it's still refreshing to watch.

Urban homesteading is pretty

Urban homesteading is pretty sweet, but apparently the Dervaes' are disliked by some in the community. Most of it has to do with them trademarking "Urban Homestead". Boingboing has a pretty good link round-up. http://www.boingboing.net/2011/03/04/urban-farming-family.html

Trademarking a term that's been in use since the 1860s?

Yes, the Dervaeses were well respected and loved by the homegrown, urban homesteaders and permaculturists until they chose to trademark "Urban Homestead" and other terms (which were in popular use for over 150 years); first they were refused, and a couple of years later they managed to get the trademark approved by the powers that be. When they asked Facebook to start taking down pages of people who used these phrases, and have been using them for years, and began prosecuting people who used "Homegrown Evolution" as well, the community at large rallied against it. You can find the whole story in this Facebook page, which now has almost as many friends as the Dervaeses:

Monday is an action day - legal proceedings are in motion to cancel this unwarranted trademark, and the petition at this point is about 300 names short of being filed.
It's a sad thing when a community member who is well loved and respected decides to turn against the community that helped establish and make him famous. If it weren't for the community's support, the Dervaeses wouldn't be where they are today. With peace and love, we continue to support them in their positive actions, but will not submit to unmerited persecution.

This is how we utilize less

This is how we utilize less people farming. Just we need to plan for it as a society. Not that everybody wants to garden...
