Update Surgeon General: Buying Iodine a "Precaution;" Potass. Iodide Runs Low

Surgeon General: Buying Iodine a "Precaution"
Conflicting messages appear in the effort to buy iodide tablets

The fear that a nuclear cloud could float from the shores of Japan to the shores of California has some people making a run on iodine tablets. Pharmacists across California report being flooded with requests.

State and county officials spent much of Tuesday trying to keep people calm by saying that getting the pills wasn't necessary, but then the United States surgeon general supported the idea as a worthy "precaution."

U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin is in the Bay Area touring a peninsula hospital. NBC Bay Area reporter Damian Trujillo asked her about the run on tablets and Dr. Benjamin said although she wasn't aware of people stocking up, she did not think that would be an overreaction. She said it was right to be prepared.

Potassium Iodide Runs Low as Americans Seek It Out
By JONATHAN D. ROCKOFF
MARCH 15, 2011

Supplies of potassium iodide, a preventive against radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland, are running low at some manufacturers, as Americans seek protection amid fears that radiation from Japan could head to the U.S., according to the companies.

One leading supplier, Anbex Inc., quickly sold out of its supply of more than 10,000 14-tablet packages on Saturday, said Alan Morris, president of the Williamsburg, Va., company.

He said the closely held firm was getting about three orders a minute for $10 packages of its Iosat pills, up from as few as three a week normally.

"Those who don't get it are crying. They're terrified," said Mr. Morris. The company tells callers that the likelihood of dangerous levels of radiation reaching the U.S. is low, but some callers, particularly on the West Coast, remain afraid, Mr. Morris said.

Talk about

a wealth of information.

Thanks

PS This is something worth printing out to have on hand.

SteveMT's picture

Some of those links disappearred, so I thought that copying...

the entire file was worthwhile for those as paranoid as I about worse case scenarios and not having access to that information, if needed.

You are very welcome.

Yeah

that's why printing it is necessary, we could be in a situation where we have no power to boot up our computers to pull up a link or print something out. Maybe not Japan, but we have our own fault line problems and the grid can go down. I appreciate the information.

FFS...!

One nuclear incident and you guys actually think we're suddenly in danger of imminent radiation death. Good grief. Roll with it. No wonder the Japanese think we're nuts.

Give me a break

I'm not talking imminent anything.

Oh and this is the third major nuclear incident for Japan.

Maybe they think we're nuts for our smug denial.

Potassium iodide only protects the thyroid gland from damage.

If your thyroid gland is saturated with iodine, it will not take up radioactive iodine. You need to take potassium iodide every day during the time you are exposed to radioactive iodine to keep your thyroid gland safe. Radioactive iodine has a half life of 8 days so you would need to continue dosing until you thought the level of exposure was tolerable.

After Chernobyl those who had taken potassium iodide in time did not have an abnormally high level of thyroid cancer later. Those who did not had a significantly increased incidence of thyroid cancer. Other types of cancer were similar between those who had taken potassium iodide and those who had not.

If you are concerned, you can still buy bulk potassium iodide from several vendors on ebay and protect yourself if you know how to measure out the proper dose. The pills have already disappeared. Also, there is something called SSKI which stands for super saturated potassium iodide which can still be ordered on ebay. This is because most people do not have a clue that it is potassium iodide in a solution, with each drop being about 20mg, so it is not being bought.

If you buy the potassium iodide powder in bulk I believe you can mix 2 oz. of it with 1/2 cup of distilled water to make your own SSKI which will have 20mg per drop. Then you just take about 6 to 7 drops a day beginning just before you are exposed to the fallout.

You can also use a mask that filters small particles, stay indoors, or when you do need to go out wear a cheap disposable raincoat.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

Face The Music Potassium Iodide Is Useless In This Case

The meltdowns that are going on are not fueled by your average reactor fuel like 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl but are fueled by Mox which is a mixture with Plutonium in it. The MSM is keeping that fact under wraps...Potassium Iodide doesn't stop that stuff.

http://sherriequestioningall.blogspot.com/2011/03/japan-expl...

I heard Plutonium is much heavier then the rest

and would most likely fall out over the ocean.

SteveMT's picture

Understand, Thomas. I just posted decontamination information.

See above.

SteveMT's picture

I read that reactor #3 had MOX, but not all of the others.

Something to do to prepare is better than doing nothing, IMHO.

Yeah I Guess

but they have lost control as far as I can see. One particle of Plutonium gets inside your body and thats about it. It isn't about how many rads you've been exposed to...I saw the vid of the one that had the Mox fuel explode and it put the whole concrete roof 3-4 hundred feet into the air...now the Navy ship has been exposed and they are moving out of the area because it's safe...nothing to see here folks move along...

As was said on the radio

As was said on the radio tonight, you have a far greater chance of being killed by some idiot texting while driving than through radiation poisoning.

Unless the guy texting has pulled to the curb,

And 4 reactors have blown to H3ll upwind from you. I will take precautions for my family. You do what you feel is best for your situation.

Tuna

I'm told tuna has potassium iodide in it. Of course, you don't want to OD on mercury, either, but as a back-up plan, it would be better than nothing, perhaps.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

Based on what I read

you would need to eat two cans a day and that was based on tuna packed in oil, I'm not sure about tuna packed in water.

Kelp is also known source of iodine

\

Free includes debt-free!

Bought some Kelp Tabs at Ralph's Mkt

Went to 3 Drug stores WG,CVS,RA, nada, went to Ralph's Mkt (Kroger in CA) and found "Naturally Preferred" brand Kelp, on the upper shelves with the fancy vitamins (they have 2 left ;-). $7.82/250 kind of weak though, 225 mcg Potassium Iodide, from kelp 150%DV, the "radiation" tablets have much more 20-60mg.

I bought 5 bottles of those kelp pills as well

Then I found out that in order to be effective you need to ingest 130 MG per adult per day. There are 1000 mcg per 1 MG .I think thats about 40,000 of the kelp pills per day.
Wifey just picked up some Betadyne.(last week a bottle of Betadyne was about $8.00,since Friday it's gone up to $20.00)
We'll use that I guess.

****IT MUST BE USED TOPICALLY ONLY.****

I read that you can paint it on your arm or abdomin then after two hours check to see if it has soaked in. If it has ,use it again tomorrow. Once it stays for 24 hrs the Thyroid is full!

So you'll gladly spend the

So you'll gladly spend the money and use a product that has no effect against a threat that doesn't exist........ I must have made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in The Land of Magical Thinking.

No my wife spent the money

BEFORE we realized that they were not strong enough for IMMEDIATE radiation blockage, but I WILL Happily spend money On a healthy dietary supplement, that I'll use daily to keep my thyroid healthy. As far as the Beta dyne goes,If used for a couple days before exposure it is enough for radiation blockage. You seem to be defiantly against people making decisions for themselves. Therefore I would agree...YOU have made a wrong turn to end up here at the home of the free. Now please make a U turn at the next website and let big brother guide you and your family from cradle to grave.enjoy!
