Farmers and Seed Producers Launch Preemptive Strike against Monsanto
Submitted by Jefferson2 on Thu, 03/31/2011 - 09:36Lawsuit Filed To Protect Themselves from Unfair Patent Enforcement on Genetically Modified Seed
Action Would Prohibit Biotechnology Giant from Suing Organic Farmers and Seed Growers If Innocently Contaminated by Roundup Ready Genes
(Excerpt)
“This case asks whether Monsanto has the right to sue organic farmers for patent infringement if Monsanto’s transgenic seed or pollen should land on their property,” said Dan Ravicher, PUBPAT’s Executive Director. “It seems quite perverse that an organic farmer contaminated by transgenic seed could be accused of patent infringement, but Monsanto has made such accusations before and is notorious for having sued hundreds of farmers for patent infringement, so we had to act to protect the interests of our clients.”
Once released into the environment, genetically modified seed can contaminate and destroy organic seed for the same crop. For example, soon after Monsanto introduced genetically modified seed for canola, organic canola became virtually impossible to grow as a result of contamination.
Organic corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets and alfalfa also face the same fate, as Monsanto has released genetically modified seed for each of those crops as well.

I've said it before, and I will repeat it . . .
Monsanto is evil.

Sue Monsanto
The organic farmers should be more aggresive and sue Monsanto for destroying their organic crops. I recently ordered Heirloom seeds to plant in my organic garden. Some seeds are self-pollinators, some pollinated by insects and some wind pollinated. My neighbors have gardens in which they plant hybred seeds and GM seeds. To my horror, I found out that my heirloom corn plants (just one of the air pollinated plants) have to be at least 1/2 to 2 miles away from my neighbors seeds to prevent crosspollination. I've watched documentaries about genetically modified corn and other plants and when the non GM carn is close to GM corn the plant is then altered which means that you have GM corn and can't use the seeds from that corn to plant the next year. It's a double whammy for the organic, non GM seed farmers and home gardeners. Monsanto seed plants can not only destroy your pure seed plants but also Monsanto can sue you for having their GM plants on your property without buying their seeds. All Americans should be livid about this. Now Monsanto has the patent on alfalfa GM seeds which in turn when harvested will be feed to our cattle and dairy cows. This is corruption at it's best and we should all be joining with farmers of non-GM seeds and organic farmers to stop this travesy. In the end it hurts all of us.

NOFA ACTION ALERT:
NOFA/Mass Sues Biotech Giant Monsanto
Suit Seeks Protection of Plaintiffs in Case of GMO Seed Contamination
NEW YORK - March 29, 2011 - On behalf of the Northeast Organic Farming Association/Massachusetts Chapter, Inc. (NOFA/Mass) and others, the Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) filed suit today against Monsanto Company to challenge the chemical giant's patents on genetically modified seed. The case, Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, et al. v. Monsanto, was filed in federal district court in Manhattan and assigned to Judge Naomi Buchwald. Plaintiffs in the suit represent a broad array of family farmers, small businesses and organizations from within the organic and non-GMO agriculture community who are increasingly threatened by genetically modified seed contamination despite using their best efforts to avoid it.

This needs to become a mainstream issue.
Business Model
I would think that Monsanto would be re-thinking this business model by now.
The freedom movement has put together some campaigns to influence the GOP. Why not do the same with Monsanto?
If we all put their stock in our portfolios, even token amounts, and then attended the next stockholder meeting...?

"The delicate but resilient intracellular biochemistry is something to behold in this 8 minute 3D imaging of the inner workings of just one cell. I am amazed to have also learned of the microbiome of 200 trillion microbial cells just within the intestines that convert our food to usable nutrients and into brain chemicals. I am in awe of the Creator’s artistry and intelligent design which becomes more awesome under greater magnification with its endless detail of colors, shapes, behaviors, communications and functions."

End of Gene Patents Will Help Patients Force Companies to Change
Some activists cheered the landmark decision on general principle, but for others, it was a business and medical matter. They say the end of gene patents could be a boon for patients, who will benefit from gene-testing companies competing for their business.
“They’ll have to deliver products to the marketplace faster, better and cheaper. There’s all sorts of ways to make money,” said Dan Ravicher, executive director of the Public Patent Foundation and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, which pitted civil rights activists and patient groups against Myriad Genetics, a Utah provider of tests on its patented breast-cancer-risk genes. “I’m a strong conservative. I believe companies are good and competition is good.”
