Breaking News: Last Minute Deal to Avoid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Perilously close to a government shutdown, congressional leaders reached agreement with the White House late Friday night on a deal to cut tens of billions of dollars in federal spending and avert the closure.

House Speaker John Boehner informed the GOP rank and file of the accord, reached in grueling negotiations over several weeks, an official said.

"We have an agreement," concurred a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Jon Summers.

Thank god

Wow...that was close. We almost found out how useless and unnecessary our federal government is.

What a drama they're unfolding...the GOP is fighting to do the responsible thing...reducing our budget by 2%. Nevermind that it's bloated by about 80%.

I hope they keep this battle up for the next year. It's simply framing how little they understand the feelings of the American people.

The fact that issues like this are front page news is evidence that we are winning.

The fact that they are bickering over pennies is evidence that we have not won.

They didn't get the message...it's time to send a stronger one.

Who won?

Perhaps I'm a bit confused. So, who was it that won the victory in Washington today? Was it the Dems? The Reps? The Tea Party?

There has to be a winner, right? Was it Reid or Boehner? Did Rand Paul get to make his dent? So, who was it again that won the bragging rights to say, "We saved the day?" Who was it that gets to bask in a mediocre spotlight cast in the dim arena of failing dreams and human suffering that is our states today?

Fox News wants to paint the picture of the recent debate to cut spending and keep the U.S. government running that way, calling this event the "Shutdown Showdown."

Now, any intelligent human being knows that Fox News is burdened with heavy interests -- but even without the ridiculous "peanut gallery" jeers coming from corporate media, this event still represents the same competitive spirit of "winners and losers."

Politico.com says that Boehner won? Maybe we should get him a trophy or something? Take him out to Applebees?

divided we fall

This major issue of government shutdown has turned out to be one of the most disgusting displays of "fantasy world politics" I have ever seen, which makes a good deal of sense coming from the political atmosphere of this age.

Obviously, the Tea Party did not "win". I would not be writing this if they had. But, what can be said about the brave men who enter the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant to keep the reactors from melting can quite nearly be restated about the Tea Party ...

Was this display, then, just a show to keep Americans placated? A rational mind must admit that it has to be! Otherwise, we need to start issuing straight jackets to each and every one of our politicians this instant: "The federal debt increased $54.1 billion in the eight days preceding the deal ... to cut $38.5 billion in federal spending for the remainder of fiscal year..."

THIS is what is going to keep the government running? Would you consider me crude or uncouth if I shouted the "f-word" in response to this? No, I cannot tell you who "won" in Washington today, but I can tell you for a fact who lost:

YOU LOST, AMERICA.

Whoa whoa whoa

Lets not talk about Applebees, bill from that place for dinner might actually be more than they cut off the budget.

The only drama is wondering when....

The mutual admiration society last night reminded me of when they passed the TARP bill.
The groping and gladhanding as they shower each other with sweet nothings just makes me wonder if one of these times they will just totally break down and start giving each other .....oh never mind. lol

What a Surprise!!! (sarcasm)

Didn't Ron Paul say a couple of times when asked about a shutdown something like:

"Well, I can't be sure, but I wouldn't put any money on it. I'm sure they will make a deal....."

Right as usual.

Republicans suck!

This reminds me of when

we spend over a billion dollars a day fighting the wars.

If they don't eliminate

the entire yearly deficits, then all they are doing is deciding how fast we continue to go down the hole.

The yearly deficits must be totally eliminated, as a starting point. Then, we can talk about "cutting" after that.

38 billion for the year

We spend over 44 billion per DAY!

I agree!

It wouldn't have made a single difference if the guvment shut down.....it doesn't work anyway!!

Ho Hum - Are We Supposed to be Happy?

My long-held belief is that we would have been better off had there been no deal at all. Government would have shut down and it would not have mattered.

I am not the only one with that view.

Real Battle Can Now Begin

The real battle will soon start. Paul Ryan wants to cut $6 trillion over the next 10 years. If it took several months to agree to a mere $39 billion, (less than 1 % of the budget), how long will it take to get agreement on $6 trillion?

Are We Supposed to be Happy?

No, this was sad for all who believe in fiscal responsibility
and sanity. The Democrats call the budget cuts draconian, wonder what they will say when Ryans' proposal is presented :)

Well, who would have thought it possible?

Making deals with those devils is a dangerous business.

More money printing and more inflation is coming our way.

July the 1st

The current QE comes to an end by the 1st of July.
I wonder if the Federal Reserve will announce a new wave
of QE, or will they actually increase the interest?

Increasing the rate...

Well, the sooner the better. But if that is the case, why didn't they do this earlier? The effects it will have will be so much worse now.

Personally for the Federal Reserve, they don't care how much

worse it will be. They are not in society after all. Their philosophy exists outside of the state of the real economy and "price stability" is their stated goal.

These idiots are patting

These idiots are patting themselves on the back for cutting 38 billion dollars?? "This is historic"??? They are definitely beyond any known logic. They can't even understand 3rd grade math. 20 trillion in debt, here we come.

it looks like the article put "historic" in quotes

for specifically that reason.

Media spin...

I like the way the media spins the cuts...
"The largest budget cuts ever made..."
Projected trajectory for 2012 is another 2 trillion
added to the debt. It was some can they kicked down the
road :/

For them it probably is

For them it probably is "historic." Historic in the sense that they pulled an epic scam over us and are getting away with it. $38 billion in cuts? More like an epic joke.
