Primary Registration Drive for Ron Paul 2012!
Submitted by Lao Tzua on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 10:33There are going to be a lot of Independents and Democrats who will find out too late that they cannot vote in the primaries! We need a party registration drive in our individual states:
VOTE RON PAUL 2012
REGISTER REPUBLICAN BY (date)!
If you are in a closed state (or one with special requirements - see below), please find out how many days prior to the primary election people need to register Republican.
I got the following info (except where noted) from FairVote.org: http://www.fairvote.org/open-and-closed-primaries.
* UPDATE: I will edit this list as I receive corrections from DPers.
Closed States:
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
California (Closed - per Jive_Dadson and Bluemaple727)
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
D.C.
Florida
Hawaii
Idaho (Closed as of this year per DPer ZeroFiction)
Iowa (Closed caucuses, but voters may change registration at polls.)
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts (Registered Democrats and Republicans can only vote for their own party in the primary but independent voters may decide which party they would like to vote for.)
Montana (Closed caucus)
Nebraska
Nevada (Closed caucus)
New Hampshire (Registered Democrats and Republicans can only vote for their own party in the primary but independent voters may decide which party they would like to vote for. Unregistered voters can register on election day.)
New Jersey (Closed - according to personal experience of DPer John2K)
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina (If registered with a party, you must vote in that party's primary. If unaffiliated, you may choose a party on the day of the primary election.)
Ohio (Must vote in primary of same party as the voter participated in last primary election. Loosely enforced.)
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island * (If you are registered as "unaffiliated" you may vote in the primary of any party you choose. Once you vote in a primary, however, you are considered a member of that party until and unless you "disaffiliate".)
South Dakota
Utah
Wyoming (Closed caucus)

We need to get rid of Parties (and Primaries) altogether.
In the end we need to end partisan-politics all together. Like Ventura said, make them PACs. We can then even the ballot access requirements (all candidates are "Independent" and must get the same amount of signature, etc. to get ballot access) then all candidates on the ballot should participate in the debates (to a reasonable degree, 200+ candidates for the California Recall obviously wouldn't all make it to the debate). We can even bring in IRV as much as possible to better the results (yes, IRV elections end up "better").
For now, yes, the Parties do not need to follow the popular primary results. To win, we need overwhelming results and presence at the Convention (i.e. Delegates).
I think we can do it though, I've always said, "If elections didn't matter, they wouldn't have to rig them."

Not Binding
I believe that even though the states have enacted these mandatory taxpayer-funded popularity polls, the courts have ruled them not binding on private associations such as the political parties because of our Constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of association.
Why would a party let strangers decide who best represents their views?
The Libertarian Party of California just ignores the results and nominates candidates they want to support.
The real problem is whether or not your party's bylaws require your delegates to be bound to the results of the tax-payer funded popularity poll. Bylaws can be changed by the delegates.
You can reach voters in California, here: http://consequeries.com/California-voter-guide.php
Wow - you learn something new
and awful everyday. We need to learn the bylaws of each state.

Thanks.

Do you mean 2011?
Or is that the prior election deadline?
MARYLAND
Closed elections. The deadline for the upcoming Primary election is Tuesday, August 24, 2010.

Do you mean 2011?
Let me know. That's awfully soon.
Huh, I didn't notice, I must
Huh, I didn't notice, I must have found an old page.
Instead, it should be August 23 2011.

Get busy
Be aware that the pols can change the rules at a moment's notice. Even if the state is not closed it can become closed. Deadlines for changing party affiliation can be moved up.
I notice that California is not listed as closed, but I think I remember having to switch from independent to Republican last time around.
California
In 2010, Proposition 14 made California an open primary
Not exactly
Proposition 14, which was a disaster for third-party candidates, does not apply to presidential elections. You still must register Republican in order to vote for RP in the primary. It is at the party's discretion to accept unaffiliated voters, but I think we all know that won't happen.
Thanks BlueMaple.
Noted.
In NY
the date to change party registration is very early in Sept.
Makes it very tough because most folks pay no attention what so ever to the election until much later. Registration overwhelmingly democrat too
Idaho is a closed Primary
as well, as of this year.
Thanks for the correction.
I've updated it above. :)
We Need a Dedicated Site for this:
We need a site, that makes a quick case (maybe with links to some articles) on why to register Republican for Ron Paul with a link to a rockthevote online voter registration (I have one of both http://serafmedia.com and http://freeindependentsun.com - just click the Bear Flag or the 13-Star Flag).
RegisterRepublican4RonPaul2012.com
I don't think we'd have to worry about being concise with the url, and with that in mind, any 4-5 word combo will most likely be available.
I think I'm busy (playing music) tonight, but I'll look into this this week/weekend. I have a SF-Campaign for Liberty/Ron Paul 2012 meeting next Monday, will present this idea there.

Based on the info above, it looks like independents can
choose a primary to vote it - but you should call the board of elections in NJ yourself to confirm.
I was not registered to any
I was not registered to any party back during the 2008 primaries and found that I had to be registered as a republican, by a certain date, in order to be allowed to vote in the republican primary.
If independent would still have been ok I likely would not have bothered to register as a republican.
Just wanted to point this out. Unless things have changed Ron Paul supporters in Jersey will need to be registered as republicans in order to support him in the primaries next year.
...
Thank you for the clarification.
It's terrible to learn the hard way you've been blocked from the primary. I'll make a note at the top.
Bump
The time to begin informing, reminding, and checking back with someone to see if they did it yet in a week or two, is now.
Not a couple weeks before the elections. ; )
