Nystrom: Off Topic on the Daily Paul
Submitted by Michael Nystrom on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 05:42Hi Friends!
Recently there has been some, ahem, shall we say discord? on the Daily Paul over the mysterious introduction of the "Off Topic" Forum. Some have gone so far as to say that "Free Speech has died on the Daily Paul." (I happen to disagree.) Jefferson has a very nice piece addressing the discord, noting correctly that we must all hang together or we will assuredly all hang separately. And Jersey RP has also noted that It is serious now. I fully agree.
But before we let this go, I should explain the Off Topic section fully. It was my idea, and was created at my direction. As people have noticed, 'Off Topic' threads do not appear on the front page "Active Forum Topics."
The point of the Off Topic section is solely to keep the threads that are not in line with Ron Paul's message off the front page, not to limit or inhibit their discussion.
Dr. Paul's two messages of primary importance, as I see them (after 4+ years of careful observation), are 1) The Federal Reserve and 2) Foreign Policy. He has other messages, of course, but these are his two big hammers - one in each hand - that he hammers away with. The Fed. Boom! Foreign Policy. Boom! The Fed. Boom! Foreign Policy. Boom! People have limited attention spans and capacities to understand, but the light finally goes off when people make the connection between the two issues - on their own.
These two hammers are really all you need to bring radical understanding to the mess we're in. Stay focused and just keep pounding away and eventually people will understand. After observing Ron Paul very closely over the past 4 + years, this is what I discern to be Ron Paul's chosen strategy.
This being said, in a free society, I believe people should be able to discuss anything they like - including what happened on 9/11, ancient aliens, chemtrails, crop circles, baseball, football, Briteny Spears, Playboy magazine, Charlie Sheen, lizard people, etc. I find all of these subjects interesting to varying degrees. I'm the kind of guy that talks to "crazy homeless people" and schizophrenics on the bus. I think there is something to learn from everything and everyone.
Furthermore, I believe that the best way to achieve a free society is to act like you live in one already -- not to beg, lobby or vote for someone to give it to you. That is already an abdication of self rule. (Thanks Octobox for helping to clarify some of these points).
My belief about freedom in a free society is why I have run the Daily Paul fairly fast and loose with the discussion topics since the end of the 2008 campaign. That and a lack of resources to properly moderate the site, and a tiredness of going through the same repetitive arguments.
The problem with continuing in this manner now is that there is a goal in sight to focus on. Furthermore, the Daily Paul is so closely associated with Ron Paul in the eyes of outsiders, even though there is no official link with Ron Paul or his campaign.
I support Ron Paul, and have learned much about politics over the past four years. And from my observations, I am firmly of the opinion that in the realm of politics (which is very different from the realm of truth), a bunch of 9/11 topics, chemtrails, Tim Turner (what's the point of Ron Paul running if Tim Turner is already President?) etc. on the front page of the top Ron Paul site aren't really helpful for Ron Paul in achieving his goal. At this point we can all assume that this goal is securing the GOP nomination for President of the United States of America.
Dig? President of the United States of America. Yes, it is serious now.
Again, I personally have nothing against the discussion of those topics per se. As I said, in a free society, people can and should talk about whatever they want. However, the realities being what they are, as the owner of this site, I have made the executive decision to set up the "Off Topic" area so such discussions can continue to take place but aren't easily findable by casual Ron Paul supporters who happen upon the site, since they do not appear on the front page.
It is unfortunate that I did not clearly explain the purpose of this section earlier, and for that I apologize to the Daily Paul community. My intention is not to censor, but to enable lively discussion for those who are looking for it, while not burdening those who are here on the site to support Ron Paul.
As it is now, the Off Topic section is not an active place, which seems to be why people complain bitterly when their topics are placed there, at my direction, by either myself or moderators. Also, the big OFF TOPIC disclaimer was seen to be as a "slap in the face." I can understand that. We've taken that off, and added a general disclaimer to the top of all threads. I wanted it to say "Don't believe anything you read on the Daily Paul." Just as you shouldn't believe anything you read in Time Magazine, the NYT, or hear on CNN or Fox News. Use discernment at all times.
I can understand that "Off Topic" may not be the best name for it, so I'm open to suggestions for a better name.
Thanks for understanding everyone. And if you have any sympathy at all for the tightrope that I walk here, please contribute to the DP fundraiser. If we hit the goal, the Daily Paul will be strengthened more than you can imagine.
Thank you for your patience and continued support of me, the Daily Paul and Ron Paul.

Fine Job
I think you, Michael Nystrom, are doing a fine job, and nobody could do it better. It's good to let people have their say, while keeping the main page dedicated to those entering Dr. Ron Paul World, eg, Federal Reserve + Foreign Policy, so the big issues don't get lost to new readers amidst other issues that people find important.
PS. Here in AK, chemtrails are NON-STOP for years, we are lucky to have 5 sunny days/year now. NON-STOP overcast/rain/snow (record snow this year).
They are getting crazy with chemtrails, and I am outraged about it, but the front page is not the place for it.
I agree with Michael
I am very active in one of the many neo "tea party" forums, and these people are SLOWLY waking up to the lies. For instance, one lady (I believe she supported mitt) posted her frightened emotions about Monsanto and GMOs. I then posted "that's why we need RP." She responded "GMOs and you are still babbling about RP?" I felt I jumped the gun, and almost had to take a step back into the false reality of "fuck Obama" and "tea party has some great ideas!". If I began ranting on and saying "yeah, GMO's, chemtrails, 9/11, medical marijuana, alex jones, vaccines, blah blah blah" I woulda totally lost her.
We all know the rabbit hole is very deep, but people can only handle so much at one time. If they get an info overload, they pass it on as a conspiracy theory, and we lose credibility. We KNOW TRUTH is stranger than fiction, but the truth will come out in due time. We need Paul in, then we can slowly bring to the table some of the more "unacceptable" and dare I say "offensive" topics, like sept 11.
I'm a major Alex Jones fan, and no, Mike isn't censoring this. It's political strategy. Just like you have to slowly boil the frog, as America has been, we also must slowly revive the frog. The sheeple don't like the ride to be too bumpy on their awakening.
Furthermore, from a principled standpoint, Mike owns this site. He can post about how delicious taco bell tacos are if he so chose to :)
God bless ya, Michael

Thanks for destroying
Thanks for destroying free-speech about Chemtrails Michael.
People introducing legislation at a city hall is not off topic, it's a FUCKING REALITY..
This forum has become a sad, pathetic JOKE.

Not Destroying
I don't think Michael is destroying free speech. I don't know if you've ever seen a the front page of a newspaper but not every story that is in the paper is on the front page. Some of the stories are to be found in different sections of the newspaper. And some stories are to be found are found in completely different papers altogether. I know that it sometimes can feel good to scream to get your frustrations out. But please don't take it out on the founder of the dailypaul. He's doing the best he can do.
And besides sometimes people actually do go and read comments in the off-topic section. So it's not maybe as unused as you believe it to be.
Two shorten the road.
Can I post real off topic stuff here?
Am I allowed to use this forum to post completely off topic, clear your head for a minute, coffee lunch and smoke break, stuff?
After phone banking, canvassing, etc., hour after hour sometimes you need a break from work related topics.
It could perhaps bring more traffic to the off-topic forum and maybe solve the "active recycle-bin" feeling some folks have described.

Off Topic is a trash bin and you know it is
The digg.com style voting system is exploited and used for control and so is "off topic" used as the recycle trash bin. Is this going to remain that way or will real open and honest discussion topics be permitted again in visible site for users? Will the Digg.com mob voting system be removed as well?

Other forums ...off topic
I belong to v7n webmaster forum as well. It has an OFF-TOPIC forum. The prime reason for the off topic forum, as here is to keep subjects which are not germaine to the intent of the site in one area. It also allows members to "rant" and talk about subjects that would be controversial in other forum areas thereby displacing the subject at hand.
I for one think off topic forums are great as it keeps others on topic.

Suggestion:
If possible, I'd suggest adding a button where I can take a thread that is not in off topics and submit it for consideration to be put in off topics.
for now, that's the mod suggestion box
/mod-suggestion-box
"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it."
on that note
Maybe I missed it, but is there a general way to flag a comment or topic for mod review? [for example, when a user is highly offensive, inappropriate and/or abusive]
Same place?
And now, just for fun!
This should be moved to the off topic area :-)

"Off Topic"
"Off Topic" sounds pretty accurate if Ron Paul and a dedication to the return of Constitutional gov't are the purpose of the site.
Support freedom and liberty candidates in 2012... Ron Paul... Gary Johnson...
How 'bout "Red Pill"?
:) A nice red pill would fit there, too. You could put your disclaimer above and underneath it the same way.

So Michael you are telling me
that RON has all the answers within himself.
Why am I here ? The party does not support his views, where is he getting any form of promotion. Anything the MSM does is to convert His supporters, not promote his message.Fox and MSNBC and the rest have collaborated on taking Ron's supporters. Hense the birth cert. and Bin laden.
I appreciate and respect you Michael.
I support you my friend.

It is time to set the Conspiracy process aside for the time being (Of which I believe in many) and focus on Ron Paul and helping him win the GOP primary. As of right now, we should all be concentrating as much time as we can on that goal!

Priorities of passions
One thing about the DP that has always impressed me is the passion that I see from members that have chosen to champion an idea as individuals.
This passion is what Ron needs to be successful in this brave venture ahead. The time has come to focus all this passion towards one goal and idea as a priority.
I am hoping that we all agree that electing Ron is the first priority at the current time.To further this goal priorities must be set and agreed upon.
I am also hoping that as important as our own personal passions are,we do not force them into Ron's plank and platform. Please let us stick to the platform that has been agreed on by Ron's camp.
For Ron to succeed in this run it may take a few small temporary sacrifices in priorities. It would go along way to not attach controversial unproven ideas to his plank without his approval.
I would never ask for sacrifices without making my own as an example. My sacrifice will go beyond just prioritising passion of subject ideas as to not harm Ron's run.
I am in business to the public with a repair shop.I am going to plaster Ron Paul all over it as my priority. In doing so It will turn away probably 30% or more of my customer base due to political affiliation.
This will be a great financial sacrifice for me and my family,Yet I am hoping that as his popularity increases with the other parties this will come back on line in a few months.
Point is, I have set Ron as a priority over all other passions because I feel this is the one last possible chance to invest in a champion of freedom for this country.
Please join me in making Ron your number one priority of passion and not add any baggage to his plank that could harm his chances.Just a small short redirection of priorities.A small sacrifice in the right direction.
This will be our last chance.

With all due respect, I must
With all due respect, I must admit that sometimes I feel that since the forum has changed format, it is micro-managing us like a corporate mainstream paper. Your integer voting system now commonly used as a daily poll just sets one opinion up against another. Is this really the direction you want the DP to go? It is very divisive and direct rudeness to a poster is becoming prevalent over contradiction of an idea or thought.
Like and dislike
I see where you're coming from with the integer voting system. I'm not personally a fan either. I don't see it as very divisive, but it is annoying, because usually the ups and downs go to the people with pet issues who feel the need to post others down based on prior ideas, not based on new thought based on the post.
A lot of time, reactions are to the poster, instead of what is posted. Rather than delivering a thoughtful reposte to the post, they just give it a thumbs down, because they disagree but can't provide logical justification.
I DO however like the off topic area and feel it serves a great purpose. I wish instead of the up and down arrows, there was just a "gauge of interest" somehow, that people could click if the article was interesting, or do nothing if it wasn't.
