Military does not want homeschooled kids

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Students graduating from the growing ranks of online high schools are running into a hurdle if their goal is to join the military: The Pentagon doesn't want many recruits with non-traditional diplomas.
Many would-be soldiers like Ryker Packard, 17, of Fassett, Pa., say they weren't aware the armed services have a policy of not taking more than 10 percent of recruits with a non-traditional high school diploma. Critics, including some in Congress, say the military is behind the times and point to the growth on online teaching and testing at all levels of education, including college degrees.
"It just grinds my gears," said Packard, who wants to become an Army diesel mechanic after graduating from Pennsylvania's Agora Cyber Charter School in June.
Packard said his conversation with an Army recruiter came to a brusque end after he told him he was due to graduate from a virtual school. "He just wouldn't talk to me," said Packard.
Packard's mom, Sherri, said her son switched to online classes after floundering in a geometry course at his brick-and-mortar school. Once he got the attention of online teachers, his grades improved, she said.

At least they still have waivers
for drugs, criminals and laughably low ASVAB scores. Priorities, you know?
Good!
Finally your military makes a wise decision!
and vice versa , I would think
It takes some indoctrination for the idea of joining the military to really get traction. If a child is properly home-schooled, becoming part of the war machine would be way down on the list of things to do by the time they're old enough to make that choice. If you get stiffed in your quest to be cannon fodder for the MIC, count your blessings. Maybe you could become a TSA scanner tech, that's a pretty hot job this week. HA
Hummm...
Wonder Why ???
Well young parents...you know what to do now !

What, the army doesn't want
What, the army doesn't want too many intelligent recruits?
Great!
Maybe my four homeschooled children will also be exempt from any future draft as well? I can only hope...

There are online high schools?
When did this happen, and why did it take so long? The "education" system is a disaster. This might be a positive step forward.

Yes, they're schools
with the variety you'd expect from other types of schools, even more variety, but each family has more choice because it's not so geographically restricted.
There are
...state-run public school at home options, just like there are state-run charter brick and mortar schools
...schools for kids who get kicked out of traditional school and want another easy school (just like there are brick and mortar versions of these).
...good, private schools (some use the same curriculums as the public school at home options, some don't)
And you can buy on-line curriculums for parent-directed homeschooling, some that are used by the above schools, some not, just the same as you can buy hardback or workbook curriculums for homeschooling. You can also piece together free curriculum on-line.
The internet increases our options for schooling, just as it does for so many other aspects of life.
A 10% limit is pretty narrow-minded of the military, but at least fewer kids will be eligible for the military.

Fascinating. I wish
Fascinating. I wish Libertarian organizations would join for the purpose of creating accredited online school options for parents sick to death of the pablum public school serves up. Perhaps some business organizations would be interested in a joint venture...

Yes.
In fact the state of South Carolina has a free online public school program:
Students throughout South Carolina are thriving at South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA), a tuition-free online public school.

The catch is that you must use their curriculum.

No. These online schools are
No. These online schools are for the most part rackets. Kids get kicked out of school and do these online crap and get a diploma. I have a friend who is an assessor for one.
It could be a great opportunity for education but sadly it's not.

I disagree
I know several students who participated in on-line high schools (and even elementary schools). Every student and situation is different, of course, but in general their experiences are quite positive. The added bonus is that parents can choose to be far more involved in their kid's education. This is not to say that there aren't bad apples out there, but in general I think that this is a positive movement.
Like any free market product, the quality
varies. It is up to the consumer to use critical judgment and choose the best option for his/her needs. there are online programs, including truly committed and inspired teachers, and classes that far excellent standard public school fare.
One size does not fit all.
Still, the reason I hated
Still, the reason I hated school so much was because I was so bored by the stupidity of students who had no interest in an education. At least at home the parent has the benefit of monitoring.

If they pretend
that they are selective and discerning, you will fight to get in. Perhaps?

But then again, it was the amazing efficiency and open-mindedness of the military that had me searching for a Ron Paul.

Finally this election thing is over and we can get on with the collapse of our currency forthwith!
Plenty of opinions...
and I agree with most listed below but, remember that Ron got more campaign contributions and support from the military than all the other candidates combined the last go around. We need them and they are still our people.

regimentation, pavlovian response, borg hive mind etc etc. etc. This is what the good ole' USA is lookin for!!! Oh and if you have 75 IQ, multiple violent felonies, gang affiliations, illegal alien, sex offender, pervert. deviant, drug addict, on ritalin since you were a kid, can't recite the bill of rights or constitution, like playing call of duty and other war video games, vague sense o' nationalistic pride without rudimentary understanding of United States' history and form of government, follower, suicidal, homicidal, fratricidal, nothing better to do THATS WHAT WE'RE LOOKIN FOR!!! We might still have some of the best technology but we now have some of the most mediocre people serving due to our lowering of standards for getting in. Ironically, one of the few groups of people still capable of producing critical thinkers who would effectively defend freedom, have impeccable morals, and know what America truly stands for and not follow unconstitutional orders are being barred from entering!?!?!?! Oh, lets just watch another action movie, strut around like John Wayne, drink beer, and pretend we're still living in the America of 50 years ago. "Your a GREAT American!"
dude calm down.
My brother in law is a recruiter and several of the things you mentioned automatically mean you can not join. First of all if you have ever been on any mind altering medication (ridilen for example) you can not enlist. Second if you can not pass there written test, you can not enlist till you can, although the recruter will help out with this, normally really stupid individuals dont make it. If you have a felony they do not want you, furthermore if you have even a speeding ticket you can not get in a lot of jobs in the military because some how if you have ever had a speeding ticket you are not trestworthy with sensitive information.
they do tend to look for people who want to win above everything else, which I find to be highly annoying, and can be used to manipulate people.
The Navy never said anything
The Navy never said anything about my speeding ticket I got in high school and I was in the Naval Nuclear Power Program.
