we are so fortunate to have you in the Senate.
That's one of the reasons we all like Papa Paul so much, because of his record of action. Rand is demonstrating that he can walk the talk.

.... the bill is tabled (74 to 13) for more discussion! Thank you Rand ... great job.

I think Rand did great. However, his use of the FISA courts as an example of why we don't need the Patriot Act should be combated. This is because the FISA courts have been too lenient; that is, they too have been another rubber stamp judiciary. I think Glenn Greewald has written about this: how lenient the FISA courts have been even before the PA.
Of course, right now it's best to focus on the PA, but I hope he understands how FISA is not some safe haven either.

I think the day we get the tyrant is already here.
They are immune to the patriot act, and although most if not all of us here will never have it used against us it is the principle. The most lacking aspect in Washington is principle, and the only reason the patriot act remains is because the cowards are scared that if another attack happens and they went against the grain, then their opponents will point fingers and say "if only **** had not voted down the patriot act, this would have never happened". It has nothing to do with safety, only power and political posturing for when the next terrorist attack occurs in U.S. then we must all stand together to let them know that their domestic spy campaign is a failure and reign in the spending to be used on machines that profile terrorists and not listen to my phone call to grandma about Sundays after church lunch menu. Remember our representatives in Washington are just like you and me, only better.

Great speech by Rand - saying it like it is, though I'll agree with some other posters - maybe he should have been less cordial. :)
I immediately sent my Senator Ron Johnson an email imploring him to stand with Rand on this.
I hope everyone else on here does the same.
Because of this. Our business account was terminated because we were depositing too much money and got flagged.
It was really weird, like, this is America and businesses aren't supposed to be successful!
I was happy to be out of that bank anyway. I had wanted to be for a long time but their locations were convenient and changing banks is a pain in the a**, but when we had to change we went to a local bank where we are valued as customers.
Thanks so much Rand. I contacted my congress person and my two senators,(M. Honda, D. Feinstein and B. Boxer..yuck!) Your doing the job that all congress people should be doing. I view You and your dad as great Americans sir..
to have another person like both Paul's speaking at their behest to maintain our taken for granted liberties..what an inspiration leading the charge...
Working to free the hemp seed - Thanks to Congressman Paul's efforts HR 1831. Peace
Rand's Rhetorical Questions: "Do we really want a government that can look at my credit card bills?" or "Do we really want a government that can write warrants on the street?"
The answer from his audience of fellow senators?
YES! Rand is asking rhetorical questions, but Senators Thune, McCain, Feinstein, Boxer, etc. are all nodding and agreeing, as if the questions were real.
These are government officials. Of course they want their people to have such powers!
"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"
"We will be having a real debate about how we can stop terrorism, but also preserve freedom at the same time."
Thank you Rand for standing up tall for Liberty.

*They can grope us.
*They can steal our money.
*They can send our sons to be killed overseas at our dictator's whim.
*They can control our education from Wash DC.
*They require vaccination.
*They can violate our 2nd Amendment right.
*It is the RULE to violate the 10th amendment.
*They are violating the 1st Amendment.
*And now it's completely legal in Indiana and with the Patriot act to ignore our 4th Amendment rights.

Damn good job Rand! It's comforting to know there are people in Washington who give a shit - even if it's only a few.
j/k. Great as always, but I wish he would be more verbally aggressive toward his fellow senators. Like some of the passionate speeches we know from our founder's generation.
It's sad that nobody clapped in this building at the end though.
Goes to show how much they don't care and are doing this because they have an agenda to do it.
Still, this speech is fantastic, even if it fell on deaf ears.
Shouldn't almost all lawyers/attorneys want the Patriot Act repealed? Seems like it cuts them out of some billing hours/work! If the Patriot Act says you're not allowed to consult your attorney --- that's some of their livelihood being taken away, isn't it??

Rand Paul can pull-off swearing on the floor of the Senate without a peep.
Was anyone even their. Was the hall empty?
Rand Paul is really stirring the pot of hypocrisy in this hallowed hall. Good!
Dear Congressman Smith,
Thank you for your response to my letter. I appreciate you taking the time, and I appreciate that our founding fathers created a system to ensure that all citizens have the ability to petition the government for the redress of grievances. The backlash of the tea party in response to certian politicians lack of respect for our founding principles is an important reminder of our representatives sworn duty to uphold the constitution. Which brings me to the reason I'm writing.
You never answered my question in my letter. I was wondering if you would explain how the Patriot act doesn't infringe on our 4th amendment rights.
Please let me know.
I appreciate your concern about the Patriot Act. I share your values and concerns.
I can assure you that I will do every thing within my power to ensure that our Bill of Rights and Constitution are adhered to.
I take my oath very seriously.
As always, please share any other concerns you may have.
And thank you for your vote.
Your Elected Representative
PS: That is the typical response I get from my ignorant and thoughtless reps who could care less about our Constitution.
Yep, that's what I've been getting.
For defending this country.
This man needs to be president.
I love this guy Rand. So glad he made it into the Senate. He's confident, well spoken, and he's right on the issues.
He goes on the record with statements that stand for individual liberty on a regular basis.
I can't help the feeling though - when I hear him speak:
He needs to step it up. The 'someday' when those in power will use the rules of the phony 'War on Terror' against innocent Americans is here. Now.
He sounds like a nice guy.
We need Rand or someone like him to stand up in the Senate, and not be so nice to the braindead legislature that are actively selling out the freedoms and prosperity of this country daily and systematically.
Is he on top of the news? Patriot Act is bad enough. But this month State legislatures are passing laws that allow the police to bust down your front door for what amounts to any reason at all. Including none.
Every single provision of the Bill of Rights is being gutted.
The hour is late Rand. Start putting some fire behind your words.
Great job Rand. Thank you for speaking for the people and liberty.
Thank you, Rand.
