Chris Miller Reporting
Gretna Police say a driver they pulled over this morning as part of a drug investigation is dead after plummeting into the Harvey Canal.
A department spokesman told WWL First News that at 3:25 a.m., officers attempted to stop a 2008 Dodge Charger at the intersection of Stumpf Blvd. and the West Bank Expressway. Deputy Chief Anthony Christiana says that instead of stopping, the driver drove onto the elevated expressway and didn't pull over until reaching the vicinity of Manhattan Blvd.
Once there, police say the driver, 27-year-old Rayshal Williams, was uncooperative with officers.
Police say a pat-down by the officers revealed a bag of cocaine on Williams.
Christiana says that's when Williams declared, "I'm not going back to jail," and fled on foot down the expressway towards the canal.
-Yet another victim of the war on drugs. Just a few weeks ago a man was sentenced to life in prison for pot in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, at the courthouse in Covington. That courthouse is the biggest building in Covington. I drive by it quite often during work. It makes me sick to see that monstrosity. I've got to move.
