Ending the Media Prejudice Against Ron Paul

The 2008 Ron Paul Campaign was effectively sabotaged by media bias.

The 2012 campaign is starting out the same way, with most discussions of GOP candidates simply ignoring Ron Paul.

We must change this. But we can't do it by simply complaining. I think we need to fight back in a way that the media conglomerates will understand. Dollars.

Boycotts4Paul.com allows Ron Paul supporters to report newscasts and shows that fail to fairly cover Ron Paul. Once the shows are identified, their sponsors can be contacted with the promise of a lifetime boycott of their goods and services.

Imagine that you are a sponsor of the CBS Evening News. A story about the GOP field runs ignoring Ron Paul and the next day you receive 1,000 e-mails from Ron Paul supporters who promise to boycott your business for life unless 1) CBS News makes immediate corrections or 2) The advertiser pulls its sponsorship of CBS News. This might be followed up by picketing of businesses that don't see the light.

Most businesses assume that for every complaint they get, there are 10 or even 100 people who haven't written. 1000 emails in a day would set their hair on fire. One reason this tactic can be particularly effective is because most businesses are operating on the razor's edge of ruin as a result of the economic collapse. Even a small change in their gross income can make the difference in success or failure. In other words, we have leverage.

At this point, the web site is up and running - but not all features are implemented.

So what do you think? Would you commit to boycotting sponsors who support biased shows/newscasts? Do you think this is an effective approach? How many emails/letters are you willing to write each week to make this happen? I can imagine other tactics - such as dropping off receipts from competing businesses with a note saying, "I would have spent my money with you, but you support unfairness in campaign reporting". I'm sure the Ron Paul community can come up with even better ideas.

I invite discussion here. And be sure to sign up at http://boycotts4paul.com

Thanks!

Addendum

At this point, it appears this topic has been fairly thoroughly covered. Many of the recent posts are simply rehashing items already addressed and are generally of the form of:

1) That won't work. (No reason given - just a negative opinion.)
Response: You're entitled to your opinion. Now go away - you're not helping.

2) Media has unlimited money and cannot be hurt by boycotts.
Response: That's why they have entire departments to round up sponsors and why they run so many ads. Because they don't need the revenue.

3) Why don't you do X instead?
Response: Why don't YOU do X? Seriously, if it's such a great idea, go ahead and DO it. We can get hundreds of people to stand around and say, "Somebody ought to do X" and they're collectively not worth the powder to blow them up. You want to count for something? YOU go do something.

4) This is a really great idea! I love it! Let's do it!
Response: Thanks. Just remember to follow through. And tell your friends.

5) I have a question about how this works? or I have an idea to make this even more effective.
Response: GREAT! Please let me know at kurt@boycotts4paul.com I can use all the help I can get!

Any further inputs of types 1-2... Save your virtual ink.
Type 3? Write up all the details of your idea, get people involved and get the project working - on another topic thread.
Type 4-5: Welcome aboard! And THANKS for the help!

A FIRST STRIKE for Ron Paul!

Thanks for writing to Castrol. While this looks like a "form" letter response, you can bet someone had to go through a decision-making cycle to address the email. One or two emails isn't likely to make much impact - but hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of emails WILL.

This is just the beginning. Some Ron Paul meetup groups are starting to pick up on this, and as their memberships come on board, the TSUNAMI for Ron Paul will begin to sweep away the bias.

It is critical that EVERYONE writes an email when we put up a new boycott and that you SPREAD THE WORD to all the Paulistas you know!

Once again, GREAT JOB! Keep up the good work!

Anyone else get a response yet?

So mad -> CAMPAIGN

Way to go.

In the middle of a conservative Republican primary, RP and Barney Frank are pictured together all over the press.

I get the principle. But if we're in it to win it, it was a losing move for the primaries.

Thanks (not.)

Yep.

I just checked.

Nope. Shrewd move.

What better way to recruit young people and independents to participate in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina?

Yes, for the general. No, for the primary.

Like it or not, RP has to win the primary before he can become president.

Is there

Any networks that are tied in with Freepress..This would be a great topic at the National Conference for Media Reform.. I went to one of them in Saint Louis. There was a lot of anger towards the media bias there..I'll have to look into it some more..

Boycott number one -Hopeless!

I would suggest that most likely the sponsor BP dictated to the show who not to cover. I can not imagine a company that would be more against the potential of a Ron Paul presidency.
If there ever was an example of a merger between state and corporation BP is that creature. Read "The Prize" if you want to understand.
Our wars in the middle east are about the control of oil and nothing more. Oil was and will continue to be the "Prize", control of which decides who wins and who loses in war. Just look at Germany and Japan in the second world war.
It is a shame that our government's policy is that they can not be honest and have to resort to such propaganda.
So go ahead with the boycott but in this case it is hopeless cause.

BP the best target?

Maybe.

The problem is we still have fewer than 200 people signed up.

It would take a lot more than 200 people to sway BP. (That's your clue to go tell all your friends to sign up. You HAVE done that, haven't you?)

It does not matter which sponsor may have, "...dictated to the show who not to cover." It only matters if we can force retraction/apology/fair coverage - OR - get a sponsor to drop the show. Today Castrol. Tomorrow, GM, BP, Chevron - whoever.

Frankly, I think it's unlikely that BP dictated to the show that they not cover Ron Paul. (Do you have any EVIDENCE that's what happened? Or are you just making things up out of thin air?) Remember Hanlon's Razor. It's a far better explanation that you've offered.

Castrol was selected for several reasons:

  1. It's a smaller target. 200 emails might actually make a difference.
  2. There are lots of alternative products. A boycott of Castrol is easy to believe because, really, how many people care what kind of oil they put in their car anyway? So the product is inherently more "vulnerable".
  3. The software to "vote' on targets isn't ready. Get me another 200 people signed up, and I'll write it.

But remember people, YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR PART and that includes spreading the word!

Finally, as for saying, "It's hopeless" - why would you waste 10 minutes of your time telling us that - instead of writing an email to help us win?

KurtA:

Upon reviewing the 'Boycott #1', I would recommend posting (if possible) a video of the incident in question. (For instance, in this case, I would like to actually see a video clip showcasing how Ron Paul was either ignored or unfairly marginalized in the show.) This would help me as I fashion their sponsor(s) an email.

Getting excited for this project... The website is looking good. How many have signed up as of now?

Here is an example for ya.

http://youtu.be/ilB-KK-hO2w

After watching this I wrote CNN and officially boycotting. I no longer check there website and so on. It's a shame!! but gotta prove a point.

Aiming at the right Target

Personally, I doubt that contacting the news outlet has nearly the impact of complaining to a sponsor.

The news hacks are used to being attacked for their bias/incompetence/stupidity/sloth. So your comments sort of run off their backs. Besides, they sort of figure they're the only game in town. If not CNN, then FOX, CNBC, MSNBC. Your options are limited, and for every person "swearing off" CNN, there's probably one telling FOX they're switching to CNN.

BUT, if you're a sponsor, you are advertising with a show for just one purpose: To sell more of your product. When the very people you are marketing to (the TV audience) begins to contact you IN LARGE NUMBERS to say they will NEVER use your product again - and listing competitors' products - you start to take notice because it is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you are paying for.

If you're sponsoring a show that is losing you business, it's pretty simple to dump the show and put your advertising dollars elsewhere. THAT puts HUGE pressure on a show, because they live and die by how much money they can command for advertising.

Complaining to a news outlet probably has less than a tenth the effect that complaining to a sponsor will have. But either way, the main thing we have to do RIGHT NOW is increase our numbers.

So tell your friends about this project.

Post a video for Boycott 1?

Actually, if you click on the name of the show, you can watch the video.

(All the links on the page are underlined.)

I wouldn't ask anyone to go after a sponsor for a show they couldn't see!

Just signed up.

Lets get it on.

Hey..

Pay attention. This message is resonating with people. All the media appearances today, he knocked it out of the ball park. Even that blowhard a$$hole Bill Orielly gave him props.

Slowly, but surely, this message is going to win.

Spending that time boycotting is not the time you could spend on winning. Stay on the message... as Lee Atwater would say.

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

Carrot and Stick - Fairness in Media for Ron Paul

There's nothing preventing you from calling up and congratulating the press when they get it right. And if you want to set up a project to say, "Thank you" every time the media does its job right, go right ahead.

But if you're saying you expect the press to play fair from now until the election just because a couple of talking heads weren't blatantly dismissive and rude, i think your analysis needs to be reviewed and I respectfully disagree. The lamestream media won't hammer Ron Paul until it looks like he may win. And if we don't have an answer for their lies and distortions, he will lose.

One answer is to punish the newsies who are unfair. And that's what THIS project is all about.

Besides, we're talking 20 minutes a week to write up to three emails. What are you going to do otherwise that can have such a large impact with so little effort?

I was thinking along these same lines,

but unless people are RP supporters, they probably won't care about him being dodged........SO, WHY don't we broaden our brush a little more, create more legitimacy with the American People, and create a website dedicated to truth in the media. AND I'm not talking one of the crappy websites I came across when I quickly googled "media truth".....I am talking something more like a wikipedia, or wikileaks kinda thing...

www.AMERICANSFORTRUTHINMEDIA.org anyone!?

or, maybe the wiki-people will hook up with us for a wikitruth.org?!? :)

Ending Media Prejudice against Ron Paul

This project is about addressing the slanted, erroneous, distorted, prejudiced, biased, unfair, corrupt coverage of Ron Paul. To be successful, I believe the target must be narrow and well-defined. That's why I chose media and Ron Paul instead of every institution in the world and global unfairness.

Not to say you can't have a site that's against "Poverty, War and Injustice" (thank you Tom Lehrer). It's just that's too big a project for me to undertake.

The domain name you suggested DOES appear to be available, so if you hurry, you can probably register it and start the project and see what happens.

In the meantime, if you have 20 minutes a week to help us address unfair media coverage of Ron Paul, we'd appreciate the help.

End the Media Prejudice - Basic site up - First Boycott Launched

If you've already signed up at Boycotts4Paul.com, you should have just received the warmup target information. It will be fun to see how fast CBS fixes a problem with their poll. It's been out there a week. Will a hundred complaints be enough to get them to fix it?

Beyond that - the first boycott target is an easy one. Check the web site for more information.

If you haven't signed up yet, now's the time. Be sure and tell your friends. We need lots and lots and lots of people to join us. Think of it as a "Money Bomb" only you don't need to send in any money!

The media is prejudiced

The media is prejudiced against him because they are misguided and afraid. They believe he'll throw people out on the streets to starve, that we'll all be killed by terrorists, that the ozone layer will open up and burn half the planet, and that kids won't get an education so they'll be qualified to flip burgers.

It isn't a grand conspiracy of evil, it's a grand conspiracy of fear and stupidity.

If there was really an unseen iron hand guiding the world, he would never have been on tv. The truth is, the Soros's of the world will soon be begging for his type of leadership, because when we go down, we will all go down, rich and poor alike.

We live in a world ruled by fear, that is why the do-gooders are empowered, and every heavy handed solution they propose fails. When we realize what we as individuals are capable of accomplishing on our own merits and put aside our childish fears, then we will have peace, prosperity and liberty!

Funny..sounds exactly like our Marxist Liberty Lovers....

That we need to control the world to prevent violence....boy that sure did a whole lot of good.

That Ron Paul will make it illegal for the Federal Government to spy on you without a warrant....meaning we could be dangerous to each other suddenly!

Or also that every single person needs to be profiled very carefully, so we can protect other people from violence. This is beyond backwards and ridiculous. Thanks a lot progressives for your big answers.

Is this project going to gain some steam?

It's about time for a project like this to start up operations because the media is starting to attack/marginalize/ignore Ron Paul's presence (as expected)... Is anyone honestly surprised by this?

End the Media Prejudice - Almost ready for First Boycott

A technical problem is preventing the first boycott action from happening right now. Hope to have it resolved SOON. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THIS PROJECT and get them to sign up. Numbers are CRITICAL for this sort of effort.

I'll Do It

I haven't bought gas, or anything else, from BP since the oil spill. I'd be happy to write emails, make phone calls, and otherwise boycott sponsors of shows that mistreat/omit Dr. Paul. We have to fight back however we can.

How Desperate is the Media for readers/viewers?

This is a pretty good indication.
