Over the past several days Rand Paul stood virtually alone on the floor of the US Senate and dared to debate the constitutionality of the so-called Patriot Act. Senate President Harry Reid was so furious he accused Rand Paul of trying to help terrorists hide their gun purchases. Paul was rightfully offended.
You see, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner had already reached a deal. They shook hands on a four year extension of the act without amendments. Rand Paul insisted that the Senate vote on amendments he proposed, and using the filibuster rules, forced that vote. And now, after his amendments were defeated, you might be asking, what has Rand Paul done?
What he has done is quite simply, amazing. This freshman senator who was told that his role would be to sit down, shut up and do as he was told, made it very clear that when it comes to defending the constitution and the God given rights of Americans, he fully intends to stand up, be heard and do what in his heart he knows is right.
Some with extreme nearsightedness might view the defeat of his amendments as the delivery of a lesson to this young whippersnapper that his actions have been relegated to meaningless antics. But they fail to see the import of what he accomplished. Paul not only proved that he is a man of his word, but he has now forced a bunch of backslapping Senators to go on record either for, or against, the American people. Rand Paul has called them out for all to see. Traitors to liberty hide no more.

And they thought they were the winners. ROFLMAO"

Excellent article about an unselfish and patriotic act.
Thank you Dr. Rand Paul.
It wasn't unselfish
It is a highly selfish act.
How can you say it's not in Rand's and his family's best interest for a free America? It is.
It's the opposite - the people that vote for the Patriot Act have no interest in their long-term ability to survive and thrive. They will not be able to escape the consequences of their actions for long. Like the article said - they all put a bullseye on themselves now. The day for justice will come. This is as far away from being selfish as you can be.
You successfully argued both sides of the point.
Your opening statement you say "it wasn't unselfish. It is a highly selfish act.". Then your last sentence you say "This is as far away from being selfish as you can be." So thanks for pointing out I was wrong while being right.
Dictionary definition of unselfish: "not selfish or greedy; generous."
In what way is Rand Paul or his family being greedy by putting their fortunes and liberties at risk of retaliation for their outspoken beliefs? In no way can you say they are working in their own self-interest. We all benefit equally from a good outcome, but we all won't suffer equally if things go bad. In other words, if a dictatorship occurred tomorrow, would you and I be targeted the same as the Paul family? Doubtful. The Paul family has been at the forefront for years, while you and I are anonymous voices on the net. Ergo, an unselfish act by the Paul family.
No I didn't
If you are selfish, that means you are self-interested - you do things because they will benefit you.
Going against the constitution and voting down Rand Paul's amendments is NOT selfish behaviour - it is STUPID and IRRATIONAL behaviour.
Contrary to this, Rand Paul is SELFISH. You and I may benefit from his SELFISHNESS, but that doesn't make his act UN-selfish or altruistic.
Alright
Alright Ayn, calm down.
It's value derivative and you're both arguing from different definitions of the word and valuations.
You can twist anything and everything to make it "selfish" if you want to make it sound good. For instance, valuing the good of his children and America, etc means he was acting in selfish support of his own values.
The other party will say because he was acting in the support of outside values, namely the good of the country which his family will be raised in, he is acting unselfishly and very generously.
It's all just word twisting, lets just agree that Rand kicked some ass.

The beautiful result from
The beautiful result from this, was that Rand Paul received more exposure and many individuals who wrote him off as a nut, changed their tune a bit. My twitter feed was awash with many positive Rand tweets - some coming from people who do not support him at all. EFF was all like "Rand rocks" and Glen Greenwald was all like "Check out what Rand Paul's doin'."
And did you watch his speech?? HOLY COW! My favorite part was about 3:27 where he says (and this is not verbatim) "Some say that the courts have decided bank records aren't private. The hell they aren't, they should be private!"
Epically beautiful.
Hate to ask
But, is there a way for the corrupt Senate to conspire and impeach and remove a fellow Senator?
I'll have to go to my pocket Constitution to find out, seems like there is a procedure. It wouldn't surprise me to see Harry Reid and his fellow travelers try a stunt like that.
Rand us bringing their evil deeds into light.
Go Rand!

My worry is worse than that possibility.
I know that these hypocrites have no moral compass and are capable of anything. There is no doubt that Rand Paul is a future POTUS. Enough said about these worries.
I really pray that Rand has zero illusions
when it comes to these people. I hope the people around him are fully aware.
I have received letters from my congress woman..
asking for donations recently, I will be taking the pre-paid envelope to let her know that I could never send money to someone that is so cavalier with my liberties and I will also inform her that I will be donating the money to either Ron or Rand Paul. Get's the point across on HER dime. You could also do this with the pre-paid envelopes from the republican party too.

How come the NRA didn't agree
How come the NRA did not support his amendment? They gave their reasons and claim that he wasn't thinking clearly when he wrote the amendment. Can someone please explain this? I want to know why a lot of people think the NRA has sold out. I really need help and have posted several places about this.

Politics Corrupts Absolutely
Dr. Mercola sent out something on the American Cancer Society recently -- he thinks they're in the cancer business, promoting use of (cancer-causing!) mammograms and drug research.
This is what happens when politics gets into healthcare or anything else: of course all the politicians want to join the American Cancer Society, it looks good. Then, the drug companies start donating money to them, because that looks good.
The organization grows too big, needs too much money, and is full of these people, and now they have a vested interest in not rocking the boat.
Same thing happened to the NRA. They were too big, so the politicians co-opted them, and now they have too much to lose (cozy relationships, money) to risk it by standing up to government.
What do you think? http://consequeries.com/
They Were Arm-Twisted
Rand had the GOA on his side. So, someone called the NRA and said they had to support the establishment against Rand.
They were told that the act would not be abused, that it was not a well-written amendment, anyway, and that if they did not support the renewal and the opposition to the amendment, that Congress would propose something horrible against gun owners, instead.
It's obvious.
They're cowards.
What do you think? http://consequeries.com/
The NRA didn't agree
Because it was carrying water for Harry Reid and Mitch McConnel. I don't think many people realize how epic Rand Paul's wrangling was. He hay have just cost Mitch McConnel his re-election.

The NRA was sold out LONG
The NRA was sold out LONG ago.
Just look at the NRA's record!
It's not that we think the NRA has sold out, we know they have sold out. All you have to do, like in the case of this latest voting on the Patriot Act where senators votes were recorded for all to see, the NRA has a record which shows a consistent stance in opposition to the Second Amendment. The only true gun pro-gun lobby is Gun Owners of America.
I would suggest studying their website, or better yet do a site search at www.thenewamerican.com for "NRA" and you will find the explanation you're looking for.
Glad you're asking the question. Most simply insist on being ignorant!

Great find, thanks.
Calgary4paul found it - great work.

I love that line, too: "Traitors to liberty hide no more."
Now they're all on record.
