Panel says "Drug war has failed... legalize marijuana."
Submitted by R_Michael on Wed, 06/01/2011 - 21:56NEW YORK – The global war on drugs has failed and governments should explore legalizing marijuana and other controlled substances, according to a commission that includes former heads of state, a former U.N. secretary-general and a business mogul.
A new report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy argues that the decades-old "global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world." The 24-page paper will be released Thursday.
"Political leaders and public figures should have the courage to articulate publicly what many of them acknowledge privately: that the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won," the report said.

and the list goes on and on....yet American farmers are not benefiting at all. Thanks 'club members' from both parties for doing what's good for America....NOT!

Hemp
Pot being legal or at least decriminalized would be a great step forward. As important is the Hemp industry. Those crazy Canadians have been makings billions from 'all things Hemp'. There are countless beneficial products derived from Hemp. Our political leadership...using the term loosely...have been the 'lapdogs' of the Tobacco and Alcohol lobbies and industries. While American farmers are struggling to hang on in this fabulous economy that the 'club members' of BOTH parties have so generously 'given' us...Canadian farmers are cornering the ever expanding Hemp market. Very healthy food products (the milk is delicious), clothing and industrial products, and renewable energy products are being developed every day. American citizens and farmers will miss out on this economic boom because the 'club members', from both parties, are at best uninformed or worse...bought and paid for by the Alcohol and Tobacco crowd. Pretty sad really since we all know how SAFE those two product 'families' are.

War on
Drugs same as War on Terrorism really just Government strong-arming the populace for its own benefit. Everyone is a criminal that's why we need all these riot police because you civilians are waaaayyyy out of hand, I mean just the other day that Kokesh guy was dancing in front of TJ's memorial, these are real problems and your Government is here to protect and even molest you for your own good. TSA is nothing more than Government sponsored sexual assault.
9/11 was an inside job .....time to get some answers..RP 2012
That would be hilarious if one day the press freaked over what
Daily Paul says and not the "Global Commission on Drug Policy"
URGENT NEWS: Daily Paul users say the war on drugs has exhausted economic resources and devastated the middle class. Congress will now be meeting for an urgent reform of marijuanna legislation thanks to Daily Paul's efforts.
anybody in here have a billion dollars so the media will listen to us?
The role of a farmer, in Fukuoka's mind, is an observer, not an intervener, of the natural order in his/her particular landscape. How is that any different than Hayek in regards to Economics?

The Schapelle Corby Nightmare
Indonesia:
It was meant to be a holiday: a two-week break to a tropical paradise to celebrate a sister's birthday. But for Schapelle Corby it ended up a never ending nightmare. Arrested at Denpasar airport in 2004 after marijuana was found in her board bag, she had become the victim of every traveler's darkest fear. The drugs had been placed in her bag after she'd checked it in and she was forced to face the consequences of someone else's crime in a country where the penalties for drug smuggling are barbaric. Her trial became a major news story, as it was glaringly obvious that the evidence she pleaded to be considered was being ignored, and thorough investigation she begged for was being shrugged off. She was sentenced to a shocking 20 years in an Indonesian jail. Her appeals were dismissed equally as lightly, with the end of the judicial process being reached in March 2008.
Today, she remains in that squalid cell, as she will for countless years unless something is done. She will miss the best years of her life, never have kids, never see them play.... the list is endless. Despair and misery doesn't even begin to describe it.
Whilst you are reading this, whilst you are sleeping, whilst you are travelling to work, or perhaps playing sport or watching TV... tomorrow, next week, next year.... remember where Schapelle is. She desperately needs you: she needs you to act for her, to speak out for her.

War is an instrument entirely inefficient toward redressing wrong; and multiplies, instead of indemnifying losses.

And again...
Ron Paul is completely ahead of the pack calling this ages ago.
"Making drugs more available
"Making drugs more available will make it harder to keep our communities healthy and safe" what a load of crap.
Like they are healthy and safe now, with the police state, corrupt judges, prison industrial complex
and drug cartels.
Even Hillary Clinton
recently stated "there is too much money involved" when asked about ending the "war on drugs".
She of course meant, money in the establishment. Drug agencies, narco cops, prisons and guards and also politics. There is just too many people involved in the "war" that stopping it might do harm politically and economically.
Many agency workers and leaders lives would be disrupted, what would all these people do for a living ?
Hand them a shovel
Give them the choice of a buy out or stay on using a shovel to rebuild our decaying infrastructure.Even a buy out would be much less expensive.
"They used to come get you and lock you up because you were insane, Now they come get you and lock you up because you are sane"
the drug war did not "fail" !!! :-(
This endlessly-repeated meme that the drug war "failed" drives me up the wall. That's like saying that a RAPE "failed".
The states mission failed.
The states mission failed. The real reason for it obviously did not. $$ for the state

Drug War
Fighting the free market is a wasted effort. They should've learned their lesson after Prohibition was such a disaster.
