RI needs more signatures to qualify for the primaries.

JWALSH.....
Yes, I would assume that it is referring to "certified" signatures. Being that the Sec. of States office is being used as a source, I would think it's ones that they are counting.
We were told to get at least 1500 because many get thrown out due to people who signed not being registered voters, or people may have moved so they weren't registered in the town that they signed a sheet for. Every town must have it's own sheet so if you are not registered there, the signature is invalid.
An illegible signature will make it invalid as well. With people trying to get in, get their shopping done and get home, some signatures are less than ideal.
The MeetUp group will be delivering the final batch on the 26th. We automatically lose 2 days because town halls aren't open the 24th and 25th so it makes thigns difficult.
If any members of the RI MeetUp group are reading this, I want to say that I am glad to know you and thank you for all your hard work. I know what you guys have done, and I have nothing but respect for all of you. Particularly Dan and Beth. Two people who put their money(and time) where their mouth is.
Thanks!
appreciate the comments, jpete40! And all the hard work everyone is doing!
Calm down
I don't know who you are "T" but I was at the Warwick Mall for 3 hours yesterday and the other MeetUp group members were there all day.
From the member who is co-ordinating our effort, I am told they already sent in 1600 signatures and we collected around 300 just on Saturday.
We were there with a bunch of Huckabee guys, 3 of whom were paid. I understand that the Guilianni and Romney(?) guys were there earlier in the week.
I'm no fan of dealing with the public and let me tell you, if you can't deal with rejection, signature gathering in Rhode Island is not for you.
I think we are OK.
EDIT: Seeing as someone already mentioned Dan's name, I will say that it was Dan who told me how many signatures we have.
RI Signatures
Hats off to those who are working outside their comfort zone - ie with the public. Great effort on the signatures - we and the next generations will all be rewarded.
Another post regarding Dr. Paul's public speaking. My thoughts are this, he is the only one running who is NOT a Politician. Those rehearsed sound bits are annoying. I agree, he should be on top of those who wish to tread on him. His is just too nice! Love him the way he is and don't want this experience to change him.
With all due respect
We don't know who you are "jpete40". This news article is dated Dec.24. I think we should confirm the numbers from campaign HQ. Mike McHugh is National Ballot Access Coordinator #703-248-9115. This is very troubling. I want to know what OTHER states need help. This has happened before.
?
jpete40 -- any comments on why the story might have reported such low signature numbers? Does that just represent whatever the State of Rhode Island has received and recorded by Friday? Because the difference between 484 (the story) and 1600 is huge.
Thank you
Thank you for your efforts and for clearing this up!
Handled by the national campaign?
It seems to me that something as basic as ballot registration is something the national campaign should be on top of and coordinating. There is a RI Meetup group headed by Dan Garthwaite. If this is still an outstanding issue, all anyone needs to do is post a table near the street entrance to the Cheesecake Factory at the Providence Place Mall across from the state house and collect the signatures the day after Christmas. A second table at the Amtrak station across the lawn would also help.
I am now in Massachusetts, but will check in with the RI meetup to see if this change was somehow missed.
Thanks.
I notice there are 98 members on the Providence meetup -- the only one in Rhode Island. That means about 5-6 signatures from each of them is needed to reach the right number, right? How hard can that be? They must each know that many people. And they do have tomorrow the 24th to collect them if needed as well.
I would hope that Ron (oops, Dan) is on top of this.
26 days ago I contacted campaign HQ
with the Rhode Island ballot issue.
I was told that "everything was AOK, see you on primary day."
Do these people want to win? These signatures could have been collected in November. Don't we need every delegate we can get?
They have $18,000,000 and they spent $0 raising it. Can they get a state coordinator?
Just wrote them the "nicest" email they ever got.
We want it more than they do so we will win "despite" the campaign HQ.

Unify
To clarify
Just to clarify T,
The signature sheets aren't released until Dec 5th. IIRC. And only the person designated as the state leader can get them from the Sec. of State's office. That person then distributes them to the people who will do the collecting.
The reason it's so difficult to get the 1000 signatures is that you only have about 20 days to do it and you have a major holiday taking days away from you.
Don't write an email
Call them -- the number is on the contacts page. Ask for Debbie Hopper, and direct her or the person who answers the phone to the link above, and ask them if they can explain that news story. Are there more signatures gathered that just haven't been submitted? What gives? Better call -- no one will read your email in time.
I can't believe
that we got to this point where the signatures have to be in 3 days, and we don't have an idea of what the status is.
But
What needs to be done? This seems awful!
