You’d take a bullet for Ron Paul, but...would you write to media effectively?

A substantially edited version of an earlier post. THANKS to reader input!

I am an occasional journalist. Let me suggest a few ways to deal disarmingly with reporters/news anchors/interviewers and the like with whom you disagree – ways that have a higher probability of ultimately helping our campaign and a lower probability of being counterproductive.

Scenario Let’s say a reporter mocks or criticizes or misrepresents Ron Paul, perhaps calling Dr. Paul an “isolationist”. What do you do?

Common Reaction: In righteous indignation, you jump to dash off a fiery epistle damning the reporter. You’re gonna defend Dr. Paul and Freedom against his #%$& enemies, if it’s the last thing you do! They can’t get away with this!

Wait! STOP!: Move your hands from the keyboard! Sit on them if you have to. THINK this through. How can you really HELP Dr. Paul?

Question You and I know that Dr. Paul is anything but an "isolationist". His policies would actually lead to LESS isolation. Why might the reporter say such a manifestly false thing?

  1. (Possible) The reporter actually is an enemy of Ron Paul who is intentionally misusing the term to discredit him.

  2. (More likely) The reporter hasn’t anything personal against Dr. Paul but his Boss has ordered a hatchet job, and “isolationist” sounds negative – even though s/he doesn’t really know what it means.

  3. (Most likely of all) The reporter is a peon who is working frantically against a deadline to get out a piece on Ron Paul so s/he can get over to covering the Mid-State Dachshund and Schnauzer Show to meet yet another deadline, and s/he essentially plagiarizes what s/he has heard/read so s/he doesn’t have to spend time doing any real research, and voilà, the lie is repeated. (This is probably the major reason MSM sources sound so much alike–not some conspiracy.)

  4. (Unlikely but possible) The reporter is neutral, or even a closet fan, or is fearful of punishment by Boss or peers. S/he ignorantly thinks that “isolationist” fairly represents Dr. Paul’s positions.

Your Responses Okay. Now let’s posit three versions of your response to the offending piece:

Letter 1

“You worthless piece of S–t! Get a clue!!! Or get a dictcionary!!!! Ron Paul IS NOT AN ISOLATIONIST!!! You don’t even no what it means!!! You MSM types make me sick dumping on Ron Paul all the time!!! No wonder you worthless rag is losing subscribers like water from a leaky bucket...”

You Think: "WOW, I really showed ‘em! They won’t mess with Ron Paul next time!"

Let's look at their real reactions:

  • Reaction of Reporter #1 (i.e., Hates Dr. Paul) :
The reporter is not intimidated at all. S/he'll is annoyed/irritated/angered and resolves grimly to attack Ron Paul even more viciously the next time.

  • Reaction of Reporter 2-3 (I.e., Ordered by boss, or struggling to get out story quickly)
You may have turned him/her into a Reporter #1 – a true enemy of Ron Paul.

  • Reaction of Reporter 4 (I.e., Neutral to likes Dr. Paul)
S/he may not turn into a Reporter #1, but will certainly be discouraged from taking any risks to defend him. Maybe even quit supporting his cause through guilt-by-association: “Dr. Paul’s a great guy, but his followers are a bunch of raving, foul-mouthed lunatics who…"

So, ironically, the blowback from your venting falls primarily on Ron Paul and on the campaign. That's not what you wanted, but that's what happened.

Letter 2

“Sir: Your article is wrong to call Ron Paul an isolationist. He’s not! And there are lots of other mistakes in your story. Why do you attack Ron Paul like this? He’s...”

Will probably just be tossed in the trash or deleted by Reporters 1-3. It certainly won’t educate them or improve their attitudes towards Dr. Paul, nor have any positive effect on future articles/presentations.

Reporter 4 may be a bit embarrassed by his/her errors, but feel helpless to change things.

This, unfortunately, was a waste of your time and effort. It doesn't do Dr. Paul any good whatsoever.

Letter 3

“Dear Sir [or Madame or, best, actual name]: Thank you for your article about Ron Paul. I especially like the part where you describe him as a “genial, grandfatherly type”. [Try hard to find SOMETHING positive to say, even if it’s just the fact they even did an article at all.] However, it is unfortunate that his foreign policy is inaccurately described as “isolationist”. Ron Paul is actually a “non-interventionist”–something quite different, and his policy of “trade with all; mess in the internal affairs of none” would actually lead to LESS isolation of America in the World. Respectfully yours...”

Reporter 1 will probably just toss your reply–but may muse as s/he does so,”So Paul actually has some literate supporters...”

Reporters 2-3 may shift a tad towards Reporter 4. At least they may become educated in the important difference between “isolationist” and “non-interventionist”. At worst they won'tbe offended or irritated or angered.

Reporter 4 will be encouraged and perhaps emboldened to move a bit closer towards the closet door or open it a crack wider.

What has your letter accomplished? It may have helped Dr. Paul--at least a bit! Yay! That’s what you wanted...right?

Conclusion
Let us be sure that the great time and energy and passion that we put into our letters to reporters/news anchors/et al help Ron Paul's campaign.

Sometimes when I'm mad, it helps me to write something on my word processor first. If I feel I just gotta vent, I fill that never-to-be-sent letter full of expletives and obscenities to vent my fury, thumbtack it to my wall, and throw miscellaneous objects and substances at it.

But then compose and send the polite, but effective message to those with whom you disagree. (Yes, even if they are #$%&* MSM types (who, you know deep down, happen to be human beings just like you)).

Let's become even more effective in our help to Ron Paul to bring a new age of Freedom. And that’s what we’re all in this thing together for...right?

excellent points!

I've suggested elsewhere, as others probably have too:

Is there a way we can come up with a database of sorts, where we have a collection of Ron Paul QUOTES or BRIEF DISCUSSION points about a variety of topics (particularly those most often mentioned in the media, such as the Isolationist example)?

It could be a place for RP Supporters to go to find maybe form letters (or paragraphs to place into form letters) on the various issues?

I know there was some website set up weeks ago with "form letters" or something like that with pre-written emails to send to eg Christians, and maybe a few other "groups", telling them about RP's stances on issues that might be important to them.

It would be sooo helpful to have a website, with input from any Ron Paul supporters, where we could click on a topic and even subtopic (eg immigration, subtopics welfare, taxes, etc) and find a few brief quotes or short paragraphs to help us draft our letter to the media.

I'd be willing to help with the writing -- with the best source being RP's official site and his own writings of course.

When writing to the media, I spend a lot of time digging through material, searching thru the official site, trying to find the "perfect quote" and the precise wording that represents RP accurately ... only to find that I sometimes don't get to finish the letter, or I'm so exhausted an hour later that I can't write the next one!

What do you think? Anyone up to it?

salt-of-the-earth's words should be thoroughly digested by all of us. It is the "right" way of doing things in a civilized world, and by our fervent support of Dr. Paul, we are attempting to do just that (make it free and CIVILIZED). Reading through the comments on this thread reminds me of the game of gossip we played as children - the further the story goes, the more it gets distorted. However, I love DailyPaul as I find it both enlightening and entertaining - and sometimes downright encouraging! Let us all remain united in one goal - work as hard as we can to get Dr. Paul leading our country back to the dictates of our Constitution! So, please hear salt-of-the-earth. NEVER write anything in the throes of your anger - IT IS NOT EFFECTIVE OR PRODUCTIVE!

The amazing thing about email

Is how few times folks take advantage of a plethora of friendly eyes which COULD proofread for free, and quickly. Instead, the first reader besides the writer him/her self is often guaranteed-hostile. It's weird. Teamwork is what works, folks!!

proofreading for free

We can just delete that one and start again.
The issue is still on the table.

Dr. Paul's safety is a valid issue and the roots have a vested interest in his health. People are blocking this discussion so more people, better writers have to push the issue and see what we can come up with.

Thanks for your help.

This forum

As a recent member here I see that this list seems to be controlled by the lowest common denominator, in that 4 people can delete a thread they don't like.

I have made several attempts to engage discussion about what can be done to increase the personal safety of Dr. Paul.

These attempts are knocked down immediately. This morning it took only a couple minutes after a couple of posters added their messages advocating an Alan Stang article that threatens 50 caliber retribution as an after the fact remedy of harm to Dr. Paul.

This is not good. These people are confused or provocateurs.
These people have ill intent and must be countered.

There are many good people here but the forum is over-run with spooks.

They can delete new threads because not many people have seen them but old threads would be more difficult to delete without notice.

The security issue should be broached in as many places as necessary until it becomes an issue to all supporters.

Dr. Paul, is too exposed and vulnerable to his enemies and I don't like it.

We can improve his odds of survival if the grassroots base can get their act together and demand security for the great man.

I hope you will help.

It sounds like it's easier to squelch the topics

that breed comments that turn into topics that the site owners have chosen not to allow these boards to get worked up about. Perhaps you could link to a forum that has accepted the responsibility for more labor-intensive moderating.

Defend Liberty!

I'm not asking for moderation

Just the opposite.
I fail to communicate.

I agree

WLN: I'm not hyperventilating about physical dangers to
Dr. Paul but am also concerned about his high degree of exposure--and even more so about what seems a concerted effort by a few people to flame, flag and squelch even the mildest-mannered discussion of risks to Dr. Paul's safety--be they germs from overenthusiastic hugs, guns at rallies, or outright assassination attempts. I don't know why such topics should be forbidden, if discussed in a rational fashion.
I suggest you e-mail Michael Nystrom directly with your comments.

concerted effort by a few people to flame, flag and squelch eve

"concerted effort by a few people to flame, flag and squelch even the mildest-mannered discussion of risks to Dr. Paul's safety--"

That's what I'm talking about.

Ok, I have had a couple

Ok, I have had a couple glasses of wine, after all it is Christmas Eve. I am laughing so hard, in a good way. I just LOVE the passion of all this exchange and how we will go to extremes to assist each other in how we should all conduct ourselves when it comes to handling the Lame Stream Media. Actually, handling our emotions because of our devoted passion in defending the good Doctor. We are all guilty and should not be ashamed. But I do agree that keeping our composure intact and following Dr. Paul's lead by being more gracious and light hearted. I do appreciate Salt of the Earth's perspective. I WILL continue to object if I find articles unfair and offensive, while keeping in mind that I can attract more flies with honey!

You get more flies with honey

Flames are always counterproductive and especially so when our only weapon is our ability to influence others. An authentic thank you letter is the most effective communication. But if you must write to correct a factual error or misrepresentation:

1) assume the error is innocent and correctable (else why waste your time)

2) write as you would if you had to correct your boss or best customer (salt's letter #3 is an excellent model)

3) write to print and local media, not to the cable news talking heads

Neil Cavuto, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck don't read their mail, but if they ever need ammunition to discredit RP by association, they need only ask their intern to forward them one of the flames Paul supporters send every day. Better to ignore these gas bags and aim your letters at print and local reporters who may actually read and appreciate your positive missive.

Ok, but can I still call Neil Cavuto

a three cent piece of sh%$?

Is it Ok if I take someone who has sold his soul for a cup of coffee and tell him what he is?

Please, can I shred Hannity???

Can I tell any columnist at the Washington Post who executes a hit on Dr. Paul that my dog has more integrity than he does...please?

Wait a second, I don't even have a dog.

Letter #1.

Dear Mr. Cavuto:

You have nothing except for lingerie pieces and the kharma from supporting the invasion of Iraq and the resultant 100's of thousands dead.

Before the debate this summer you asked Dr.Paul what the problem was with the economy and why we needed to fix the economy? What?! You gutless little piece of lint. Dr. Paul has been debating Greenspan since BEFORE YOUR PARENTS MET and you treat him like a.....

Excuse me, I'm sorry, let's handle this young newsman properly.

Letter #2

Dear Mr. Cavuto:

Thank you for inviting Dr. Paul on your show to discuss the white supremacist who gave Dr.Paul $500. It is about time we found out the truth...ABOUT YOU YOU LYING LITTLE SACK of SH%$.

I've got your mother on the phone and she says to tell you not to come home for Christmas....vermin!

Dang! There I go again.

All right third time is the charm, I know if I concentrate I can get this done the right way...It is not that hard, just relax and let the words flow.

Dear Mr. Cavuto:

Thank you for inviting Dr. Paul onto your show. I thought it was warm and seasonally funny that you discussed the different candidate's Christmas TV messages before setting up your two wood and AMBUSHING DR. PAUL, A MAN WHOM YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE EVEN TALKING TO AND WATCHING HIM EXPOSE YOU AS THE TWO DOLLAR AND TWENTY FIVE CENT LACKEY THAT YOU TRULY ARE. By the way, your fu%$#ing hair looks stupid...my dog's hair looks better than yours....and I don't even have a dog.

We want it more than they do so we have discussions about how to approach the media in a civil manner and I discover it is better for me to stay away from the media.

T

Please don't take this personally, I couldn't resist. Your point is correct and I support it, I just can't do it for Neil and Sean and.....

Unify

LOL

NIce......

Cavuto wasn't that bad

He didn't come off like a hawk he just kept asking Paul if he's gonna do something about Israel and the 500$ dollars I feel he may be a supporter in hiding .But he knows how the people are brainwashed for War Israel he may believe the lies he is told Cavuto is a financial analyst he knows DR. Paul's right

Maybe

He did an interview with Dr. Paul two or three weeks ago which was favorable .... So I am a bit confused too. Maybe he got 'told' from on high or from his colleagues who knows. We need to make it seem as though the country is changing (which it is) and they will be left behind if they don't get on board. I think CNN gets it (sometimes).

"What does conservatism today stand for? It stands for war. It stands for power. It stands for spying, jailing without trial, torture, counterfeiting without limit, and lying from morning to night."

Lew Rockwell

LOL!! That's it, T, let it all out...

I'm chuckling like crazy!

But definitely let it out somewhere that won't 'harden' them. We don't want to convince them that Dr. Paul and his supporters are "dangerous" and must be "stopped at all costs".

I suspect you would need to write at least another three letters before you're ready for prime time with them. Why not try to listen to my happy song. It soothes me.

Um, looking back over the letters, perhaps a different tack? Maybe you can focus on other reporters who don't make your blood boil as much, and whom you have a greater chance of charming? I mean, if Hannity & Cavuto are lost causes, why waste your time -- time that can be more effectively invested in the...

Good call

Right on the money. Everyone should take this into account before they send an e-mail.

thank you. we shouldn't have to spell it out, but it's good to remind *all* of us from time to time to keep our passions in check and always be constructive.

Yet another thread about Ron Paul's lack of security has been taken down by cowardly trolls.

Our enemies seem to be jamming this forum.

This topic needs to be raised in every single thread.

Ron Paul needs security and to be relieved of the obligation to personally engage everyone that professes to be a supporter.

He has enough to take care of than worry about making everyone feel special.

If people really support him, they will understand the need.
