It's Different This Time

There are some noticeable changes in the 2012 Republican primary for President. The differences are very noticeable, but the uphill battle continues. For me, the biggest difference is that we are starting half-way up the hill.

Of the Paul grandchildren, I would argue that I am the only one with any clear memories of the first presidential election attempt in 1988. I remember the Libertarian Party Convention in Seatttle, WA in the fall of 1987. I remember being in an elevator with Russell Means and thinking this was the largest man that had ever lived. At seven years old, anyone over six foot tall was huge and Means was probably the only Native American man with traditional beads and braids that I had ever been standing with in such close proximity.

1988 was about ideas, and it was an introduction to a third-party candidate who believed in the ideas about which he spoke. The crowd was small, the newspaper articles were few and far between, but it was about the message.

In December 2006, my grandfather announced to our family that he would be running for President in the Republican Primary. Everyone was together…all five of his children, all of his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was Christmas Dinner, and there was anticipation in the house about what this might mean.

It would be unfair to say that I was excited or that I thought my grandfather had a chance. In fact, I was worried. I saw a ten-term U.S. Congressman who stood for liberty and limited government putting himself in a position to be mocked nationwide. I just didn’t know what to think – but I knew he had no chance of actually winning. My best hope was for him to make a good showing – and further the message.

What I didn’t expect was for my grandfather to take Rudy Giuliani to task and make him look like the fool he is in front of the “once” free world. It was a pretty amazing experience. I got to see firsthand what my grandfather and his message meant to people. My fondest memory was my attendance of the New Hampshire debate and the amazing people from that state we met.

This time, however, things are different. Yes, I know…the media continues to pretend Ron Paul doesn’t exist. But, this time we aren’t trying to convince anyone that we belong in the debate. This time we have a veteran group of volunteers and staff in early states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. This time, ignoring Ron Paul will only work for so long…his message has turned the corner and now places him as the leading statesman on these issues because he has been so consistent on them for so long. Not even a Newt Gingrich speech on ending the federal reserve can trick people.

This time, Americans are looking at wars that have now dragged on for ten years. This time, Americans are waking up to the devaluation of the dollar by an unconstitutional central bank. This time, they are feeling it at the grocery store. This time many of them have lost their job because of these monetary policies. And like me, many have wondered if their jobs are secure, and if so, for how long. More people are watching the actions of our Federal Reserve and questioning its authority and whether or not such corruptions should be permitted. At the very least, legislation to actually audit the central bank is popular and gaining steam.

Several weeks back, my wife and I were in the kitchen when a very good introduction piece followed by an interview of my grandfather came on TV. This was not one of those interviews where family members called each other and said, turn this station on because your grandfather will be on in twenty minutes. This was a surprising interview we saw simply come on the station that was on in our home at the moment – a news station of some sort. After the interview, my wife turned to me and said, “You know what, he could win this time.” Ever the pessimist, I could not reply with anything to dispute her statement. I said, “I think you might be right.”

I challenge everyone here at the Daily Paul to reflect on how far we have come since I joined this community in January 2007. Momentum is picking up, and people from all walks of politics and life are joining together because they understand that less government and more freedom is the only way to bring back this great nation that was founded on those principles. This is still a democratic republic where we, the people, determine who will represent us at every level – including our executive.

Our nation cannot continue to exist with government acting and spending the way it is. We will never see the things that made America great again unless we direct our elected officials to quit giving away what is not theirs to give. I am certain that if I spend more money than is in my checkbook – I will be held accountable for those actions. Why has the government not been held accountable for spending more than it has in its checkbook?

I don’t know how the election will turn out, but I do know that it is different this time.

Just look at people that are

Just look at people that are tagging "likes" for Dr. Paul on facebook on daily basis. Just a small proof that this peaceful fight to get the truth out there is been won.

Here we are five months after this originally posted

I'm so happy to say that it still rings true today - it really is different this time! I believe Ron Paul has a very good chance at winning the nomination!

Terrific sentiment Matt.

Terrific sentiment Matt. Remarkable progress indeed.

10-15 million more voters need to believe in non-interventionism (liberty) at home and abroad to change America. Minds changed on Syria. Minds changing on privacy. "Printing money" is part of the dialogue. Win minds through focus, strategy.

It's an exciting time to be alive.

I was out in Pennsylvania doing a sign wave today and he is definitely gaining ground! Lots of positive response on the ground today.

From a Former Neo-con

"What I didn’t expect was for my grandfather to take Rudy Giuliani to task and make him look like the fool he is in front of the “once” free world. It was a pretty amazing experience."

No kidding! It was this moment, more than any other, that made me sit up and pay attention. For a man to stand there and tell the truth with the crowd mostly booing him and fellow candidates snickering at him - courage! That's all i can say. I can't tell you how much respect I gained for him that day. No words can convey it.

Thanks for your perspective.

Thanks for your perspective. This time does have more momentum.

There is a wise lesson to life that I learned from a book

"the War of Art".......resistance is everywhere and in everything around and in you. Resistance is a self created defeat. If you give in to giving up..resistance has told you that you can't win. If you give up because someone else tells you to, you have given into the resistance of another person. If another person wants you to stop because they don't like your ideas, and if you stop....you've given into resistance.
If you fail, you have not lost. If you fail to act, you have lost. If you believe for one moment that failure is the end,you have been defeated by resistance. Failure is not relevant. You pursue, and work on what you are made to do,and you do it...and eventually you will succeed with it in some shape or form. Artists do not get defeated by the world...they defeat themselves!

Ron Paul's ideas cannot be defeated unless he was to defeat himself with resistance. If he is to become president,he succeeds ...if his idea spreads like wildfire and he does not become president, he still succeeds!Anyhow..thats just a way to put things into perspective.

God Bless your family :)

and all of us. He can win this time...God willing he will win, and so will we all...here in America and by extension around the world :)

Thanks!

I can not tell you what your grandpa has meant to me. I am a grandmother and I can tell you, "you should be proud". I have voted for him three times in my life and the older I got the same message is given....but people did not see. Now they are starting to see. Thank you for your comments I loved it. Please give him a big hug next time you see him for me, I see our future in him...always have.

The American Dream............
you have to be asleep to believe it!

and how correct you are.

from this vantage point, in north texas, i cannot see anyone else winning.

it is different. we have this, the dailypaul. we already have these meetup groups. we already know what we need for sign waves and what it takes to become a state delegate.

new hampshire was fun. wasn't it?!
my wife and i got married on christmas day in fort worth. our meetup group gave us a wedding gift by sponsoring us to new hampshire for the primary in january 2008. we spent a week in concord and ran all over the state talking our heads off like never before. neighborhoods - downtown stores - at stop lights - i mean......we were SO gung-ho that we literally showed up in -11 degree weather with shorts and a t-shirt. my wife had sneakers on with breathing holes - like you'd use for running. THAT'S how much we wanted to do it - even though we had NO winter clothes - and none that would have sufficed up there.

we met so many great people - volunteers from all over the world! we had to leave just as the votes were coming in. my wife had to return to her work and me my schooling.

your grandfather and grandmother have literally changed my life and the lives of so many others it's staggering. i mean.....it's unbelievable. each of us have a book to write. there's not ONE of us literally millions of people that doesn't light up with a story to tell.

delight in this, if you must in anything!
what few people have the chance to see the change happening as it happens and to be so close to its origin at this present time!

ah.

our honeymoon - sarah gail and i spent in a sleeping bag on someone else's floor in a tiny cabin up in the woods above concord - doing what we thought was RIGHT.

we look VERY much forward to this coming battle and, unlike before, are steady and prepared.

thank you for taking the time to write and for letting us write back to you!

we have the power, your wife

we have the power, your wife is right we are a legion and we will win. i just got done debating my former political science proffessor here at my city college on all of the issues and why i support your grandfather and my ideological mentor. the debate was on his facebook page. i owned him, he called my ideas extreme as he did dr.paul, i replied with a swift kick in the nuts in the form of this statement

"i dont think the american people are incompetent i want the power to be in our hands to debate issues and decide whats best for us, you k...eep saying extreme we all know that if you dont agree with ether mitt romney or hillary clinton your automatically labeled extreme, i am extreme im extremely aware that government is the enemy of the people. i am aware just like the founding fathers who who started an extreme new system and extreme idea that the people should control their lives and their fate i dont support ron paul because hes ron paul i dont support him because of what he wants to add but rather what he want to subtract.i think that you're extreme extremely faithful in a failed system of a two party socialist agenda of globalization funded by rothschilds rockefellers and power hungry thieves, that censor and own the MSM to convince you that if we dont keep borrowing from their banks were doomed forever"

it is different

I have a friend in Australia who just sold his car so that he can have money to come to America and campaign door to door for the good doctor.

How cool is it that Ron Paul is you grandpa? Man, that is sweet. You better soak up his knowledge and help him in whatever way you can. Quit your job and work for his campaign!

Matt -

Your grandfather is an ass-kicker who is changing history. I can only imagine how proud of him you must be. It reads as though you have strong Liberty roots. Could it be that you could run someday & continue defending the Constitution?? Just curious.

Oh yeah - sent you a pic of Dr. Paul & myself a while ago. Did you ever get it? Also meant to send one w/ your Grandmother, but don't remember if i did.

Excellent post.

@Lacandy

I am often asked if I would one day run for office...it is not something I actively plan to do. If that were my intention, I am not sure my intentions would be pure. I have seen the toll it takes on one personally and the effects it has on the family.

If I ran for any office, it would be to further the cause of liberty, work to get government out of people's lives, and ensure the US Constitution was used to guide all elected officials actions.

My wife would vote no, my boys are too young, and I am almost done with my doctorate in education. I am also represented by the best Congressman in the nation - I live in my grandfather's district!

It feels right

There is no doubt that MANY people have come to understand Ron's philosophy since the last election. This time around is so different. The media for the most part has been respectful to Ron. Some more than others. I also think Rand's campaign also brought some more attention to the movement. The biggest asset that I have noticed since the last election is the dedication from Ron Paul supporters. I saw a lot of people in the last election get suckered in with all the mainstream candidates and once the election was over all you heard was crickets chirping. This goes for Obama supporters as well. You won't find that here. Ron's supporters have held the line and remained steadfast with the message of Liberty. Every person I know that understands Ron's message has made it a part of their daily life. Our unwavering dedication to this campaign has paid a true honor to Dr. Paul and his unwavering principled dedication to this country. He is a true Statesman that should be added to the history books right along side the founding fathers.

"I have found that being rich is not about having the most but about needing the least"

Rudy did more to promote liberty than he would have ever dreamed

The Rudy debate is what woke me up. Thanks be to God for your grandfather. I pray for him and all of the family every day. Let him know at every opportunity that there are so many people who love and respect him beyond compare.

Been rethinking every earlier misdirected thought ever since. Just hated it that it took me until I was 47 to discover Ron Paul.

You can hear the truth in his

You can hear the truth in his words, and you can feel the inspiration in your heart. When Dr. Paul speaks about our nation, I feel it in my bones, because I know that his vision for our nation is about the America I was taught about as a child. The one I had felt was so far gone. No longer do I feel that way.

Where are the Romney or Gingrich supporters creating grassroots videos, or walking across the nation holding townhall meetings?

There aren't any.

I personally, will be here providing relentless support, in whatever way I can, to help him win. I have never gotten involved in any political campaign before now, but I am already doing everything I can, and I will not ease up.

Dr. Paul is the only one who accurately identifies the true nature of the problem.... the Federal Reserve, through fractional reserve banking, and central economic planning. Unless you are addressing this issue, then you could never garner my support.

BE INSPIRED.. Things are happening which are unprecedented, and it will only awaken more and more people to the true nature of our issues.

Spread the message...

Dr. Ron Paul, your our only hope!

Think for yourself......Question authority...

What a Statesman!

It seems that you have a very good family :) I wish I knew about Ron Paul earlier, but I didn't get introduced to him until I watched "America: Freedom to Facism" the film by the late Aaron Russo. I checked him out on the internet and that was it, I finally found a politician that told the truth! Until then it was like "Yeah, whatever politicians are all the same."
Well I have to give some kudos to Ross Perot...he tried! How's that NAFTA working out for us!! lol.
An often said saying on the DP is that "Ron Paul cured my apathy" and I can tell you that is so true for me!! I am truly greatful and thankful. I can say for myself that he has given me hope.

Fear knocked on my door and Faith answered!

It is different

I have brought two democrats over to the liberty side of the fence! That tells me that there is certainly something different! People our "waking up" in droves! It is so exciting to be a part of this and can only imagine what it's like for your family! I think he can and will win in 2012!

Your grandpa inspires me. He gives me hope. He didnt force feed me a line of bull.... he encouraged me to educate myself and that's exactly what I have done. The service that he did for our country just running for president in 2008 was immeasurable (not to mention ALL the work he has done for this country in his life)and I am so grateful that he's running again. He is a true American hero... in an age where heroes are sorely needed and in short supply. His honesty, enthusiasm, and straight talk make him a formidable opponent for obama. Hearing him speak puts a smile on my face and brings a tear to my eye.... that is some serious impact for a man I have never even seen in person. And one of the reasons I think he has such a big impact is because it's not about him, it's about his message. And that message resonates in each of us on a deep and profound level. That is why I think he will giv'em hell in 2012!

Thanks Matt. I've been around

Thanks Matt. I've been around in this for 20 yrs and I think your right ...but maybe more than that. The media stil fights us, but it's not working anymore. The recent poll numbers keep inching up 10,12,13%. The other candidates internals and focus groups are seeing this too. That's why you're starting to see them try and parrot our message. People are ANGRY. When that happens, all bets are off. These numbers get a little closer ...lookout!

It takes a very special family to stand by a prophet and a real

statesman like your grandfather, Matt. Kudos to Carol and the entire family for making it possible for our Dr. Know to persevere and continue to pursue his calling.

I hope we can reciprocate the love and the dedication you have for Liberty for humankind.

Extreme RonPauling: Liberty Defined & Constitution Obeyed. . . will be my motto for the next 18 months. . . so that it WILL be different this time :-)
