Time Magazine cover asks if the Constitution Still Matters

Provocative? Perhaps, but that’s nothing new for Time magazine with a history of taking iconic American symbols and using them to make political statements.

On Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Time magazine editor Richard Stengel presented the cover of his new July 4 issue, which features the U.S. Constitution going through a paper shredder and asks does the document still matter. According to Stengel, it does, but not as much anymore.

“Yes, of course it still matters but in some ways it matters less than people think,” Stengel said on “Morning Joe.” “People all the time are debating what’s constitutional and what’s unconstitutional. To me the Constitution is a guardrail. It’s for when we are going off the road and it gets us back on. It’s not a traffic cop that keeps us going down the center. And what our politics are about – politics are about conflict. There was no people who argued more about defining principles of America than the framers of the Constitution. They argued both sides of the most powerful issues in American history – slavery, states’ rights, central government. So to say that what did the framers want is kind of a crazy question, I have to say. I write about that in the piece.”

Stand in the way of progress.

I never could get that one.
WHERE are we progressing to. Certainly not Peace and safety.
GOD keeps those two to Himself. Anything else is a LIE.

The Constitution is what The People say it is. A Republic.
"IF you can keep it".
WE have been overun by people who no longer want a REPUBLIC.
Some LOVE to dominate. It's their thingy.
And,some cannot fathom living without being dominated. They would be lost and wouldn't know what to do for themselves. I think we here call them SHEEPLE.

The Constitution was written for the average man who can actually THINK for themself. That is why the ELITE hate it so. It is like with GOD . IT shines a light onto their
EVIL deeds.

No Governing Authority Exists? - Our United States Constitution

To my understanding, our Constitution was "placed off-line" in March 1933 (some say earlier in 1913); by the hand of FDR. A presidential decision was it? Question: Has it ever been re-instated "legal-wise"? Or when Gore spoke at a news conference some time back and reminded questioners on a point of contention that "there is no governing authority" (putting the onous of revelation on media perhaps), were we given a pattern piece to be followed?

"Ron Paul Confused the DOI with the Constitution" ???

He really said that. I don't even know where to begin with this guy. He's either a complete idiot or a shill.

Yes the constitution still matters...however, Time magazine does not...

It's ironic that the constitution is the only thing protecting Time's right to ask such an unpatriotic question.

They will start caring about it

when the angry public starts dragging them out of their cushy gov't offices and begins hanging them from the lamp posts.

It'll matter alot to them, then.

Stengel has it partially right

when he says: "To me the Constitution is a guardrail. It’s for when we are going off the road and it gets us back on.".
The problem is America has crashed through the guard rail and is now plunging over the cliff, and the rocks below are looming large in the windshield. Ron Paul is the rip chord on our parachute!

Quinquagenarians for Ron Paul! Who says that you can't teach old dogs new tricks?

Stengel has it partially right

That's a good way of putting things in perspective!

When you see someone that writes a "Big Gov't" article....

Look up their name on a search engine. I do it when I see people that seem to be lying on TV too...and most of the time I find a hidden agenda. The writer of this article is tied to the CFR and was president of one of the many organizations tied to the Rockefellers. I usually put in the name and the name Rockefeller to see a shills true intentions. SUBVERSION is everywhere. Almost everything I hear on TV is a lie. Once I started making sure the people on TV and in the press were credible...I quickly found most are not. They are part of the NWO agenda. Also, I read an article that said that "TIME" magazine was founded by a guy in the CFR almost 100 years ago. Anyone in the CFR is a paid puppet or just clueless to it's purpose. If you don't know anything about it it's time you learn who really controls your gov't.

Are they talking about the

Are they talking about the constitution that is reinterpreted to mean whatever the daily whims of the socialists happen to be, or the constitution that means exactly what it says?

I am sick of these stupid

I am sick of these stupid liberal morons saying " the Constitution doesn't say what the government can't do".It was written to define the governments role and limits,if it was written to say everything the government couldn't do,it would would be longer than the bible, the IRS tax code and Obamneycare combined.

summation

blog comment: "Darn it, we can’t let the Constitution stop us from progress"

That video is ABSURD

This guy doesn't comprehend the Constitution. And when did Ron Paul ever confuse the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution?? They are completely undermining our Founding Fathers by manipulating their intentions with that document. There is nothing elastic about the COnstitution.

"What would George Washington think about drone warfare in Libya; a guy who didn't even know what an airplane was?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Principles don't change. Use common sense and work past you insecurities instead of conveniently utilizing the "living document and "time-elapse" excuses to justify your irrationality.

This ruined my day

Does Time Magazine Matter Anymore?

Seriously, guys. Who reads Time magazine anymore?

If you read nothing else, read this: A Contract Between Americans

Poppycock

This guy Stengel is a liberal drone... To use his analogy: If the Constituion is a guard rail then we've pretty much run off the road and are rolling down the ravene. Never liked TIME magazine for its lack of intellect... I like it even less now. Trash.

The Constituion has never mattered...

...to TIME Magazine.

Yesterday I heard the editor of TIME say that the Constitution is a "living" document.

This kind of belief is what has ruined our country and will end in the New World Order.

TIME magazine is a traitor to the United States (I mean what's LEFT of the United States).

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Doesn't matter if you think it matters

It doesn't matter if you think the Constitution matters or not. It's still the supreme law of the land so you must follow it.

Portraying that if enough people think it doesn't matter they cam just ignore it is a flawed concept. This is a Republic, not a democracy. All the people in the country can't vote away my rights because rights are un-a-lien-able.

Time: an apologist for our present tyranny.

Rationalizing away the Constitution...what next, God?

Quote from the only sentence that matters from this story:

"Their view of the founding documents was pretty well summarized by Texas Congressman Ron Paul back in 2008: "The Constitution was written explicitly for one purpose — to restrain the federal government."

This is classic disinfo..explain the rules but not the game

.. and then leaping to an assumption.

central economic planning was opposed by most fouding fathers which is why the constitution was framed to keep government out of the individual's economy. the constitution was violated in 1913 when central economic planning commenced under Wilson.

after that the constitution became slowly worthless because it loses its value, as do all things in a social centralized economy... but we have come to the end of the bubble and its time to go back to fiscal conservatism where the individual economy matters

Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. -Henry Ford

Time magazine is a waste of trees

Read the Barockectomy (bracketing on the cover) issue of time today at the chiropractor. The bracket was on the cover with a picture of RP among others. But the article was pathetic. No mention of Dr. Paul at all in the text! NONE!!! Just a picture of a school bus with a sign and bumpersticker on the back.

Why even waste your energy on them, they are clearing worth what they were recently purchased for: $1.00- which might indeed be hugely over-valued.

No, I found one mention of Ron Paul in the TIme story.

See p. 1 of story under "Where's the crisis?" Quote is above.

Interview

I saw the interview with Stengel and it made me want to kick the shit out of him. The Constitution is only a "living document" to the extent that it goes through the full process of being ammended. That's important and he seemed purposefully "unaware" of it.

These arrogant journalistic fools believe

they are more educated and enlightened than Jefferson & co. because they are in step with the 21st century status quo. Except for racial insights, they are ignorant by Jeffersonian standards -- even by 19th century standards.
