PFC Ryan Reed jailed for putting family first

http://couragetoresist.org/2-uncategorised/917

US Army soldier sentenced to 10 months imprisonment at Fort Hood, Texas, court-martial. Your letters calling for a reduction in PFC Reed's sentence are needed.

By James Branum, attorney for Ryan Reed. June 27, 2011

His crime? - He put his family first.

PFC Reed tried to get help from his chain of command when his wife suffered from serious health issues after the birth of their first child, but his request were repeatedly denied. In fact he was told by some of his NCO's that he should give up his child to either his parents (or the state), so that he could legally abandon his family and deploy with his unit.

PFC Reed left the unit for six months. Upon return he was told that his family would still get no help (he was even forbidden to talk to the chaplain about his problems) and that he must deploy. This time he fled again, taking his family to Canada where he believed he would be safe from prosecution and his wife could get the care that she needed.

In October 2010, PFC Reed made the difficult decision to voluntarily return to the United States. Upon return he was arrested and then escorted back to Fort Hood, Texas.

If he was forbidden from

If he was forbidden from talking to his chaplain that is both a violation of his freedom of speech as well as freedom of religion. Also in violation of separation of church & state.

Crazy Predicament

As an Army veteran, I've seen some crazy circumstances that kept a soldier from deploying. I don't know the details of what happened here, but the EFMP (Exceptional Family Member Program) is designed for this very type of case. By applying for it, the EFMP gives authority to keep a soldier close to family (and geographically close to care for that family member) for any "necessary duration."

Once again, I dunno if the guy applied for it, but it doesn't seem like he tried the 'legal' channel. Gen Campbell is good people, though.

My heart goes out to his family.

If the soldier didn't know of this, anyhone

with heart in the chain of command could have helped instead of slamming him in the clink so he cannot help his family.

Anyone...

The chain of command for a PFC - going to the battalion level - is only gonna be about 6 people. Just sayin.

Ok, so that means there are

Ok, so that means there are approx 6 people who could have helped this soldier but refused to do so.

I am just so sick inside

So much is wrong with this world...

Heart breaking...
How many other soldiers are in the same situation?
Only God knows...

First soldier that comes to my mind is Bradley Manning.
For over 1 year now rotting in prison.

See in our Orwellian World exposing war crimes is a crime.
