OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - "The price of organic food is kind of through the roof," said Julie Bass.

So, why not grow your own? However, Bass' garden is a little unique because it's in her front yard.

"We thought it'd be really cool to do it so the neighbors could see. The kids love it. The kids from the neighborhood all come and help," she said.

Bass' cool garden has landed her in hot water with the City of Oak Park. Code enforcement gave her a warning, then a ticket and now she's been charged with a misdemeanor.

"I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley.

"That's not what we want to see in a front yard," said Oak Park City Planner Kevin Rulkowski.

Why? The city is pointing to a code that says a front yard has to have suitable, live, plant material. The big question is what's "suitable?"

We asked Bass whether she thinks she has suitable, live, plant material in her front yard.

"It's definitely live. It's definitely plant. It's definitely material. We think it's suitable," she said.

So, we asked Rulkowski why it's not suitable...

Don't Go To Jail Over It......

Jail = They win.

It's time we stop being passive to bullies. Go offensive. Put up a fence and say, "There settled". Then go find some real dirt on them and tell em "It's your trun to deal with it."

City Planner - that job title

City Planner - that job title sounds like it came from the Soviet Union. Kevin Rulkowski is really living up to the communistic ideals of that position.

There's another city Planner who needs

retirement so he can work full time beautifying his own front yard in the "common" mode he finds so important.

What would Gandhi do in this

What would Gandhi do in this case? Wouldn't it be really cool if all the neighbors on her street, in protest, did the same thing...? Let it spread and plant your own gardens on your own property. I am now arranging to plant garden beds wherever it gets the most sun on my property.

Nobody really owns their land anymore.

If you don't pay the lease (taxes) or follow the rules, you get evicted.

down with the

down with the agro-terrorists, please dear Gov. keep us safe from front yard grown tomatoes and onions.

Well, violate the standards

Well, violate the standards of "behavior" for your neighborhood and you risk someone's ire. That's a given. Why this person couldn't just make a garden in the back yard, I'll never know.

Maybe the front yard has

Maybe the front yard has better sun exposure than the back yard.

ony one person complained...everyone else loves it

You can do a research on this story.
I am aware of this for a month at that time she was just given a warning.

Here in Toronto one of the libraries I visit has a vegetable garden at the side of the building and it's ok.

When the bread costs 100$(FRN's)everyone will be growing food in the front and the back of their houses -- perhaps you too.

I'm not saying it is right or

I'm not saying it is right or wrong, as a matter of fact I can remember neighbors back in the 70s having gardens in their front yards. It would be an uncommon thing today and it apparently rides on the razor's edge of acceptability for housing in that area.

Housing associations...

Housing associations started this crap,Everyone is worried about the value of their property. What's it worth now?,It may actually be an equity to have a garden.

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

I agree. They also dictated

I agree. They also dictated whether or not you could hang out laundry on a line.

I think I remember that

One of their excuses was that the fragrance in the soap and softener attracted troublesome bees.City folk,What a mess.

Yes, I recall an earlier

Yes, I recall an earlier article that was posted here about a garden that was started in the common area of an apartment complex and the poster had some kind of collectivist argument that was roundly attacked by the majority of people who replied.

I had a friend that actually...

I had a friend that actually got fined for breech of association contract because his front door jamb was a different color than all the rest in the neighborhood. They told him he could not leave his door open or paint it to match. His fault though,He decided to live there and signed the stupid thing?
