Chickens and the Gulag made for a really good day.
Submitted by shovelhead on Sun, 08/21/2011 - 21:00Not sure how these two topics go together, or if anyone cares, but today was a good day.
While at my local Goodwill store, I found a hardback copy of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" for $1.50.
When I got back home, I found out that my buddy "Pete, the Chicken Man" left me 5 beautiful, four month-old, barred rock hens to replace my 11 RIR's that were converted to a foxes meal (everything likes chicken) over the last couple months. I know, but they'd rather live on their feet than die on their knees, so they run free.
So, I've now got some new chickens and a sweet deal on a righteous new (to me) book!
Might seem like nothing to most, but I'm a simple man - and these are the victories here in rural Maine...
Still trying to figure out how this giant-ass gov't that I'm paying for played a part in pursuing my happiness (total cost = $1.50 and doing some snow plowing for Pete)...

That is an awsome day
in my book. I am so happy when I find a penny on the ground or someone comes over for a cup of coffee. My hens are the best entertainment and the eggs priceless.
Thanks, for sharing your great day news, we can all use some of that.

Did you finish the book?
It's a great book, kinda like the road map of USA since he wrote it...173 wasn't it?
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!
It's a must-read, IMHO...
Hi The Granger,
My favorite chapter is "Arrest" - first chapter, I believe. Incredible story. How does the saying go - "history might not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme"...
I think he wrote it a long time ago, but held off publishing it until those mentioned in it (real names) wouldn't be injured by it.

I read it in 2001
I was sure that what was wrong with the USA was that our politicians had not read that book, and then, in his second campign speach, "W" mantioned Solzenitchen, and that's when I became sure our poliicains not only read that book, but were employing it as a road map. But, gee, what a book, what a man, what a life. Onto "The Cancer Ward".

No wonder you feel like you
No wonder you feel like you had a good day, it sounds like you aren't limited as to how many chickens you're allowed. Where we live, there's a four chicken limit and no roosters. We are enjoying the two we have and plan to get two more soon. Curious, which ones do you find to be the best layers and get best?
RIR's have been the best for me, so far...
Hi Gibson,
Just looking through some old posts and wondered how you made out with your girls?
As for me, as they grew older, I found that one of the "hens" I got was actually a rooster. He was friendly (to me, at least) and would come running when I called him. He was one big (and loud) chicken - well, apparently not big enough. He gave his life protecting his girls today...
Did you ever get your other two? What kind do you have and how are they laying?

I like simple stories from
I like simple stories from people. Not that it had anything to do with Ron, but neither did a wonderful piece of music someone else gave us here, to listen to tonight, and I had a HORRID day which started with my computer being blown up by lightning, having to drive 45 miles one way where all the anifreeze leaked out of my car and blah blah. It ended well, tho..all got fixed, I did not run out of money, met some awesome young people, talked a bit about Ron, and heard your smily story and the concert performance (which am still listening to). No matter what. Love and Liberty STILL LIVE!
