Need Advice, Juicing.

I am 25 years old and I have been doing karate (tang soo do) for seven years and am strong fast and flexible, but I am also 325 pounds (please note my belt test are about 5 hours long at this time, and some of the mat requirements is Jump spinning kicks that even at my weight I am able to perform correctly, and yes I am touchy about being called fat because I can do really cool things). The irritating thing is all the little guys eat whatever they want to and dont gain an ounce and all the big guys never exercise (at least not like I do), So I decided on doing juicing to help me loose weight, since everywhere I turn this is the advice I have been given. Right now I personally know someone that is pure juice fasting the last year due to cancer (its gone now by the way), and someone else who did that due to "old age symptoms" to great benefit, due to the amount of exercise I do (quite a lot of jumping and kicking and katas etc) I will not be doing a pure juice fast at this time. I am looking for any advice or websites that anybody on here could give, or any recipes. I just got my juicer today and mixed apple, 2 carrots, celery, and half a lime together for something that wasnt bad But right now my biggest problem is I dont know what I should be mixing in, and what is affordable to put in, or what I should be mixing together.

Thanks for your advice and consideration.

Im new to juicing but ive been doing quite a bit of research and i found these peoples success stories to be what really ultimately convinced me to get into juicing. the first,
http://www.youtube.com/user/rawfoods
is a wealth of juicing recipes and juicer recommendations. he also has another page about growing food called growingyourgreens.i know previous people have mentioned growing your own or buying organic if that fits into your budget, if simply for the added nutrition value alone. the second,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UK-aX0_fAw
is a girl who sticks to a raw and vegan diet, but she is also an athlete like you seem to be. i believe she has a few other channels as well.
i also check http://naturalnews.com/ everyday for health and other news, and like others have recommended as well, i found fat, sick, and nearly dead as well as forks over knives, and the beautiful truth (Gerson therapy - raw diet) to be very good viewing indeed.

There's a great movie on

Netflix right now about juicing: Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead

Here's a write up about it, with inspiring before and after pix.

Don't know where to start

Juicing is a great way to supplement nutrients. I would definitely add that to your game. At the time, you could be stuck between a rock and a hard place because your sport requires you to athletically participate for hours. This requires you to eat properly. Without really knowing what you put your body through, daily, is a problem; however, while you are competing I would not eliminate a thing.

You have to watch your carb intake when you are losing weight, and you have to watch your carb intake when you are competing. The philosophies will be different. I don't know one successful paleo-diet marathon runner. Why? Carbs are the fuel for the athlete. The more complex the carbohydrate the better you'll feel training, and competing because you'll be creating lots of ATP (fuel) that is metabolized during activity.

In my opinion, if you want to compete to win don't eliminate but rather add and refine. By refining, I mean, no refined white flour, or simple sugar carbohydrates. They burn to quickly, often making you feel sluggish throughout the day, and whatever is left over stores as fat. Sugar is a poison the serious athlete would work to eliminate it. If you must- only 1 ounce of dark chocolate to pleasure your senses a week. Kill the alcohol consumption it will retard the liver in it's metabolic function.

When you are not training to compete I would use strict portion control and up the cardio and core training while maintaining or increasing any resistance training you currently do. You will burn more calories naturally by increasing your muscle mass. It's here, without any competitions in your next 90 days that you can work to burn the weight.

Example diet for a day: Breakfast 1 Mushroom omelet, 1 cup fresh strawberries, and 12 oz 1% cottage cheese

snack Shake/juice/protein bar (low-sugars)

Lunch: Chef salad

snack: 30 pistachios and 2 ounces of turkey jerkey

Dinner: 10oz Salmon, 1 cup asparagus, 2 cups red pepper soup, shake/juice

This plan is courtesy p90X by the way.

What you should notice though is how much and how often you are eating. 5-6 Small meals a day would do wonders for you.

Think of your body like a furnace, or camp fire. If you don't feed the fire it doesn't burn as hot, or as much. The type of wood you feed it also helps. Think of hi fat, hi sugar processed foods as the worst you could be feed the fire- The would is damp/wet or green-- too much and you'll kill you're fire. On the other hand, if you are doing all the right things when that fire is roaring, you'll be able to consume almost anything and it will burn right up- but stick to the good stuff and you'll never put it out again.

With the juices you should watch the fruits you'll put in- Apples and Carrots are high in sugars but they certainly kill the bad taste of the kale, and other dark green leaves that you should be sticking to.

Finally, I just started p90x and it's a great program that comes with a lot of helpful information plus you don't have to bonk out and kill yourself in front of a whole gym. You don't need weights (all body weights), but it doesn't hurt to add some when you feel like you are building more muscle.

Hope this helps you out.

I juiced for around 2 months

I juiced for around 2 months last year, not a full juice fast though. I ate a normal dinner and juiced for other meals. Juice fasting probably would have had better results as I felt I stagnated a bit during this time.

Before I did the juicing I was eating grapefruit + celery for my first meal, ate a normal dinner, then ate either a big bowl of broccoli or cucumber later on. Doing this seemed to work better than with the juicing.

Juicing is fairly time consuming. I have a masticating juicer, omega vrt350hd, which is supposed to be one of the better juicers but does take a while. Eventually I decided that it would be a better use of my time simply to eat the veggies whole instead of juicing them.

When I was juicing I would use green apples, celery, kale, cucumbers, ginger & lemon. Although I would just add whatever other veggies I also had at times. Broccoli sometimes comes with large stalks that nobody seems to eat, so I was adding them to the juice as well. I liked the juice more when I strained it to get most of the pulp out. Also using the right amount of ginger & lemon made a big difference as well.

You might want to watch the following documentaries: "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" and "Forks over Knives." Also, do some searching on YouTube and you'll be able to see examples of how well people are doing with juice fasting. Also look into raw foods diet / weight loss as well.

Hope this helps....

I juice 2-3 times a day and

I juice 2-3 times a day and try to limit high sugar (apple, beet, carrot) as much as possible, but if you are used to more sugar, it takes a while for your taste to adjust. Here is a 30-day plan that takes you gradually from sweeter to more veggie-based juice without shocking your taste buds too much.

As far as diet, I have found Dr. Mercola's metabolic typing to be very helpful. He takes the view that different metabolic types need varying ratios of protein/carb/fat, and eating a diet that does not fit your type can completely sabotage your weight-loss goals. For instance, I lose weight and have energy w/ high protein/fat (beef, cheese, butter) and have no energy and gain weight on vegetarian or high-carb diet, my husband is the opposite.
Here is an online quiz to test to check which type you are
http://products.mercola.com/nutritional-typing/
and here are Mercola's juicing recommendations:

Anything you could actually grow on your own?

If you can juice home grown herbs, fruits and veggies and overall your costs will be reduced pretty good AND as far as health goes the stuff at the supermarket these days has lost MOST of its GOODNESS and flavor compared to natural organic homegrown produce.

I would actually try out store bought, versus home grown versus going to a local farmers market or street vendor. See what tastes best and priced right for you.

Weight loss

1. Don't eat so fast. Finish the bite that's in your mouth before shoveling in the next one. Pause between bites to savor the food.

2. Stop trying to feed your emotional hungers with physical foods. If you can't find love from someone around you, give your own love to yourself. (think "inner child.")

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juices Book

Look into finding the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juices Book By Norman Walker.

The absolute most detailed book on the subject with detailed years of research. You can find it used for $5.

It is a must have book to go with your Juicer.

It is on Amazon for $8.00 http://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Vegetable-Juices-Norman-Walker/d...

I used to be a juicer and Norman Walker fan...

I've read all his books cover to cover several times and juiced fanatically for a year or so several years ago.

It's not too bad a diet but lacks protein in my opinion and has excessive carbs which leads to high insulin levels which covert sugars to fat.

These days I much prefer the Primal type diets as the best way to thrive and be lean. I highly recommend the The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. Lots of great info at www.MarksDailyApple.com

Although anecdotal, go straight to the Success Stories section. You'll be amazed and the improvement not only in people's appearances, but how the diet transformed their health and vigor for life.

And Tom Woods is a big fan of this diet too, quite an endorsement :-)

Chia

Seriously. Perfect to mix with juice because it's tasteless. It's LOADED with Omega 3's, antioxidants, etc. It's helped everybody I've ever turned onto it.

I prefer the milled (ground) chia and I get it from the guy who knows the most about it (Dr. Wayne Coates). Here's his website... http://azchia.com

It's very inexpensive. Really good for your pets too.

3 great watches!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbIixJI_oa4 The Gerson Miracle examines many of the elements of the Gerson Therapy, explaining why we are so ill and how we have in our grasp the power to recover our health without expensive, toxic or mutilating treatments, using the restorative forces of our own immune systems. Even the most advanced cases of cancer can be successfully reversed using this method. While the results seem miraculous, the real "miracle" lies within our own body and its healing processes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuJrfYG7oh8&feature=share The co-author of The pH Miracle, Dr. Robert Young in an extended 42 minute interview, talks about the importance of juicing when starting down the road to health. His program advocates alkaline foods to help balance the body against the typical american diet of mostly acid-forming foods. He says using a juicer daily could be one your most important steps to good health and longevity.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/289122/fat-sick-and-nearly-dead Focusing on two men whose bodies have been trashed by steroids, obesity and illness, this documentary chronicles the rigorous healing path -- including a two-month diet of fruits and vegetables -- that both attempt in a bid to rescue their health.

All of these comments are

All of these comments are right on spot. But one thing you need to be aware of is that fat cells take two years of being 'depleted' to actually die and for your metabolic rate to be 'reset'.

So you can lose a lot in the short term but you will gain it back easily if you are not consistent for long periods of time. Sucks but thats the microbiology behind it.

Best thing to do is to set a over all long term goal of losing X amount per year. Then divide that among the overall time in doable increments (3 months for 30 lbs). One of the guys I work with did this and lose 100 lbs in a year by reducing his fat content intake and being consistent.

So good luck and BTW I do Judo so rep the martial arts!

Perhaps I'm being picky

Fat cells don't die. They are metabolized and consumed then we excrete the waste from the metabolic process if it's not usable.

2 years of fat cells being "depleted" to actually die and your metabolic rate to be "reset." This information is just plain wrong, and I'd question the medical physiology text that it was found in.

metabolism is the rate of chemical reactions that happen in an organism. There is anabolism and catabolism- building up and breaking down.

The reset analogy makes no sense to me. If I'm overweight do to poor exercise, with the previous statement, even if I run everyday and exercise- your statement suggests that little happens. It's false. You burn calories, and the more you'll burn the more catabolic activity you'll have. Conversely, you have an anabolic activity due to the breaking down of connective and muscle tissue in the body. If the person doesn't change his or her routine daily, weekly then you will plateau and the anabolic changes will be slow. If the diet is unfulfilling in regards to proper nutrition or protein intake (necessary for muscle growth) then your anabolism will be even slower, and thus, your metabolism will be even slower.

If what you are referring to is more along genetics then yes, there is a genetic predisposition for general metabolic activities but these can always be influenced through diet and exercise. We can push our genetic precursors through exercise and nutrition.

Finally, yes, a plan would be helpful. Write stuff down and keep it in your thoughts throughout the day.

add strength training

to your regimen. Muscle mass even at rest has a higher metabolic rate.

another thing to consider are the boot camp style workouts. when I was in the army I saw amazing transformations. skinny kids bulked up and big guys slimmed down.

we didn't drink too much juice.

high protein, high carbs...buckets of water

and run your arse off everywhere.

thanks for the advice and help

this has been a very interesting thread. one of the things I find funny is all the people saying not to put vegitables and fruits together and watch the natural sugar intact, considering anyone new to juicing (like me) is going from almost no fruits and vegitables a week to, well more than five a day to say the least.

Second I have found myself needing far less sleep while juicing but finding out my sugar addiction seems to have kicked into overdrive.

Third I have a lot more energy and that is very nice. Thanks

there is actually nothing

there is actually nothing wrong with putting raw fruits AND vegetables together. When you mix them raw and cooked, there is a problem with the mineral use and enzyme functions.

one of the best combos is

one of the best combos is coconut water and a shot or two of wheatgrass together.

Juice WAY more greens. If you

Juice WAY more greens. If you didn't get a masticating juicer, get one for greens. The cheaper, manual masticating juicers are best for doing just that, because they oxidize the food much less, while heating a lot less than electric ones, especially centrifugal juicers.

The nutrition in green juice is massive and decreases appetite as well. The chlorophyll acts as hemoglobin, transporting oxygen throughout your body. The digestive enzymes and minerals in greens far surpass the high glycemic fruit juices as well(though fruit juices are also important for brain power, cleansing, energy etc.) Wheatgrass juice has more nutrition than 15 pounds of garden veggies and more chlorophyll than over a hundred pounds.

I recommend reading up on Gerson therapy, Norman Walker and anything by Ann Wigmore.

Also, check out the Norwalk Juicer on youtube. They're extremely expensive, but have maintained their superior status in the juice market for ages.

watch the carbs

just cut back on the carbs. carbs are energy, but if you're carrying extra, it won't be burned until you reduce your carbs enough. carbs are rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, tortillas, cake, sugar, cereal, fruit, fruit juice, etc etc etc.

try cutting your carbs in half. see how that goes. if no change is apparent after 2 weeks, cut them in half again.

make sure you're getting your power veggies. dark leafy greens, turnips, squash, broccoli, bell peppers, asparagus etc etc etc. (celery is an awesome source of natural sodium, and electrolytes)

any carbs you do eat, should be complex, slow absorbtion.

with your youth, and ability to exercise, it should be quite easy to burn off what you want to, if you keep your carbs under control.

thanks for the advice

now that I have been juicing a couple of months I can transition to watching carbs. My biggest intact probably comes from ketchup and bar b q sauce. Unfortunately I dont think I can juice fast till late december, but I am looking for a good time to fast for 2 or 3 weeks then transition back into regular food.

p.s. carb control is just

p.s. carb control is just that, monitoring how much energy you intake, it's not a total elimination.

once you are within your ideal weight range, you can add carbs back depending on how much energy you need.

how tall are you

just to put all the other details into perspective ;)

broad shouldered. and my chest sticks out more than my stomach. and I can do thirty pushups at a time, about 50 squats, dozens of kicks. jump rope. all that good stuff. what I am saying is that its not all fat. Most people peg me at 230 too 250
