The Irony.. Ron Paul the only candidate endorsed by Reagan
Submitted by ACinMA on Thu, 09/08/2011 - 12:04Im not one for throwing around the Reagan endorsement card, but I just find it ironic, and interesting that Ron Paul is the only candidate that was on stage for the debate who was actually endorsed by Reagan himself.
I find it odd, though not surprising, that this was not brought up at all during the debate.
Santorum at one point brought up how he advocates a Reagan style foreign policy, which again carries irony considering Reagan, when endorsing Paul, specifically described Paul's foreign policy beliefs. As we all know, Ron Pauls position on war, and our foreign policy has not changed at all since this endorsement.
"Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first. We need to keep him fighting for our country." Ronald Reagan

Reagan Town
I live in Dixon Il., the town that Ronald Reagan grew up in..Any advice on how to approach a local VFW to try and spread Dr. Pauls message to some troops, perhaps even form a "vets for paul" from "reagan town" coalition together?

Or any advice on any type of "coalition" building..I'm not very good at talking to people, but I'd like to spread Dr. Pauls message as far and wide as possible, and what better way than showing people from Reagans own boyhood town supports Dr. Paul..Again, I live in the town that Ronald Reagan grew up in..Anyone with ANY good ideas as to how this could be used positively. For example, if I was able to get a picture with the principal at the high school that Ronald Reagan went to wearing a Ron Paul shirt or something..I don't know, I just feel like I'm on to something, especially since everyone wants to try and compare themselves to Reagan. HELP with ideas.

Do you have a laptop?
Or an email list?
If so, show them or send them this:

Laptop, yes. Email list no..I have no email contacts (just recently became internet savvy)..Got both those tube videos, as well as a 70minute video I put together of other clips from online that is pretty powerful for Troop and foreign policy support of Dr. Paul..Just not good on approaching people..Hell, I'd love to be able to go out to the local VFW and give like a 20 minute speech and hand out some dvds and brochures, just trying to figure out the approach to take

Are you phone banking?
I've seen Ron Paul recommend that people do what they want, or what they feel comfortable doing.
You could start a Ron Paul Facebook page for your town.
I'm not sure going into a VFW to give a speech would be the best idea, especially if you are not comfortable doing that. Are you a veteran?
Ron Paul's Convention Speech
Did some phone banking for
Did some phone banking for Iowa and N. Hampshire, but like ya said, Dr. Paul insists you need to enjoy what your doing, and unfortunately I'm not a Phone person either..I hate Facebook :-), and no I'm not a vet BUT my oldest brother is a Lt. Colonel in the Marines (19 years active service) and been overseas multiple times, so I kinda figured that would be an "in" at the VFW. Also, if I was going to try and give any type of "speech", I'd have a good 30 minutes of material before I ever even mention Dr. Pauls name...I'm very good with words, and have actually wrote a couple that ended up on the radio years ago, it's just the delivery to a live crowd that makes me hesitant..But I also live in the town that Ronald Reagan grew up in. As you may know, everyone loves to try and compare themselves to Reagan and call themselves "reagan conservatives", Well Dr. Paul was friends with Reagan and they actually endorsed eachother back in the day, so how cool would it be if a group of soldiers FROM "Reagantown" endorsing Dr. Paul made their way into the news

I see, a group of veterans from Reagantown would be great.
I think it's an excellent idea. Does your brother support Ron Paul also?
If you could even get a small group of Reagantown veterans you might be able to make news. I see your strategy now. I was just wondering how the veterans there would feel about a non-veteran coming into the VFW to give a speech, I'm sure they would be much more open to a fellow veteran, but maybe it's not a big deal. If you can at least find one of them that is already a Ron Paul supporter that would be big step.

Honestly, no idea about my
Honestly, no idea about my brothers support..He left for the military when I was only 9yrs old, and prolly only seen him a couple times a year for the last 18-19yrs and really thats just on a holiday or maybe someones birthday. Have actually only seen him once since becoming aware of Dr. Paul, and I made it a point to not try n talk politics..I know he's been over in the wars numerous times and has lost some of his soldiers, so I guess all I could say is I sure hope he supports Dr. Paul ( I know I've converted my mom, sister, and other brother)...but, figured that mentioning my brother to other vets might help "break the ice"...Not to toot my own horn, but the more n more I been thinking about the whole "reagantown" thing the last few days, I really do think that I've found a strategy that could somehow make a real difference.Imagine: a picture collage of Reagantown Troops for Ron Paul, Reagantown mayor for Ron Paul, principle of high school that reagan graduated from for Ron Paul, and the list goes on and on..The rest of these a**holes wanna quote reagan or call themselves "Reagan conservatives" every five minutes, I really wanna take Reagan and Dr. Pauls messages and shove it down the establishments throat...

I'm surprised you don't have contact with your brother
You don't have his email? If you do, ask him who he's voting for and see what he says. You don't need to mention who you support. Then go from there.
Just mention indirectly that you saw that Ron Paul is receiving twice as many donations from active duty military than all the other Republican candidates combined and ask him since he is in the military why he thinks that is.
Show him this chart: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AXjvNZ4p0Rs/Tr2Kl09LUEI/AAAAAAAAEC...

Ron Paul's Convention Speech
Long Story "Short"...
Grew up, four siblings, single mother, brother left for marines when I was like 9 or 10...Seen him maybe 2 or 3 times in his first 8 years of service, and maybe once or twice a year for the last 10 years...just didnt get a chance to "grow up together as brothers", and I've heard enough through my mom to know that he's been in too many years to ever be a ron paul supporter, "fearing" of backlash from higher up..keep in mind he's been in almost 20 years and is right under the generals, flying on planes with them all the time...I've heard my mom express that he basically agrees with ron paul, including foreign policy, but he would never express it outside closed doors...Hate to say it cause he's my brother and he's served so many years, but it pisses me off to hear someone that high in the ranks technically support dr. paul, but refuse to be vocal about it because they're basically more worried about their own job..Obviously a character flaw on his part, but again, he's my brother, he's been involved in atleast 3 different wars, and had to divorce his wife of 15 years because she was continuously cheating while he was away, and has 3 teenage children he has to support, so I can't be too mad :-)..disappointed, very, but not mad.

Well, why don't you just try talking or writing to him.
You never know what might happen until you try. It doesn't matter what rank you are, everyone loves to receive mail from family. He may not respond, but you can plant the seed.
And who knows?

I encourage you to go with your instinct
Public speaking is an absolutely critical skill to have in the art of persuasion. Central to that is constant assessment of audience feedback to better hone your speech. Since you live in Reagan's hometown, you'll have the advantage over me knowing what sort of anecdotes from his lifetime might resonate with the local VFW crowd.
For instance, I hearken back to Reagan's "Morning in America" speech. What other accomplishments in Reagan's career might closely resemble those of Dr. Paul's? This is the sort of topic I would include in my (your) presentation, assuring our vets that you have a deeper understanding than what they might have initially assumed.
One more thought to share: Dr. Paul is tenacious in the face of adversity. Vets always appreciate an underdog who is not afraid to take on lumbering giants!
Keep challenging yourself by taking these sorts of initiatives by the horns.
And remember to take a deep breath every now and then. The pregnant pause is much more mysterious than an utterance used simply to fill the "awkward silence". (My girlfriend once counted the number of times in 15 minutes I uttered the filler 'words' "um" and "uh". The final tally in those 15 minutes was about 21 ... to make matters worse? It was a lecture to a college radio course on this very subject.)
:-^
Thanks for the encouraging
Thanks for the encouraging words...Funny you mentioned it, honestly one of my pet peevs of Dr. Paul is that he as well tends to utter "um" quite often (but obviously he doesn't use teleprompters or anything, and actually talks to spread a message and not just predetermined talking points, so he can say um all he wants :-))..But not nearly as bad as Romneys lip smacking, OMG!! I don't know if anyone else has ever noticed, but almost every time romney pauses and then goes to talk again, he smacks his lips, driving me crazy!!

Dr. Paul, the ONLY one endorsed by Reagan, & the ONLY veteran!!!
Candidate Dr. Paul is a compendium of ironies.
Dr. Paul is the ONLY one endorsed by Reagan, himself having endorsed Reagan over Ford and the corrupt, moldy, tired old-timers in 1976.
Dr. Paul is the ONLY veteran! He is therefore the only one qualified to be commander in chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Dr. Paul is the only physician. That makes him the only one qualified to handle the issue of healthcare.
AND he's the only one with a consistent record and philosophy! Every last one of the others are corrupt, flip-flopping weathervanes.
...Keep this list handy for all of your neo-con friends out there. Let's see what they have to say in response!
"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"
one thing, Perry was also in the airforce
Actually Perry was in the airforce too - around the mid 70's. No combat though.

Was he in the reserves or active duty?
It's strange that he doesn't flaunt his military experience more, since he is one to flaunt.
I wonder what happened.

Same thing in '08
I recall in one of the debates from 2008, each candidate was making statements about how they were Reagan's "foot soldiers" and the most like Reagan. I think the moderator had specifically asked a Reagan question to encourage this. Ron Paul never breathed a word about having gone against the establishment in '76 and '80 to support Reagan. Nor did he mention the old endoresment. We all wondered why it never came up. I think he has a distaste for name dropping, such a humble man. I suspect his campaign pushed him to do the ad showing his ties to Reagan this time. I'm glad they did. It gives people a little bit of insight into who he is, and has always been.

I really wish
He would say "I hate to do this as I do not like exploiting my friends, but this is what Reagan said..'insert Reagan endorsement'. I still hold the same views as I hold today. Why are you all saying I am 'anti-Reagan'!?
May the LORD bless you and keep you
May the LORD make His face shed light upon you and be gracious unto you
May the LORD lift up His face unto you and give you peace

I thought that Santorum's
I thought that Santorum's Reagan foreign policy statement was a perfect place for a Ron Paul rebuttal, he wasn't given the chance to speak, but it would have been as simple as saying Santorum again is confused about his history as Reagan, withdrew troops from Lebanon after the bombing of the barracks and later said that it was a mistake to send them as the US has no business getting involved in that sort of interventionism...somethign to that effect...not that we need to attack Santorum the guy is a self-made train wreck.
There's so many great spots
There's so many great spots Ron could have rebutted, he needs to be more aggressive in chiming in. However, don't be like Ricky who tries to get in a statement on everything. Pick out the important areas and force your way into the question
