Congresswoman Lee Introduces Bill to Repeal the Authorization to Use Military Force
Submitted by Dquixote1217 on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 11:21Congresswoman Barbara Lee, like Jeanette Rankin before her, bravely stood alone in Congress against a vote for war, the vote in 2001 for the so-called Authorization to Use Military Force, a Constitutionally dubious passing of the war decision buck to President Bush and his successors. A majority of Americans now believes that the Afghanistan War that followed that authorization never should have been begun and should, in fact, be ended. So, the Congresswoman, along with initial cosponsors Jones, Woolsey, Grijalva, Conyers, and Honda, is offering us a second chance, a chance to get our response to 9-11 right, to restore war powers to the Congress, and to impose the will of the people on that body.

There never should've been an
There never should've been an authorization to use force against Afghanistan. Afghanistan had nothing to do with 9/11.
The appropriate response would've been granting letters of marque and reprisal against Al Qaeda, as they and they alone were responsible for the attacks.
Tell me why in the hell the Taliban would've been complicit in the attacks when they were trying to negotiate natural gas pipeline deals with the State Department? It would've been counterproductive to their own ends, and seeing as they had little control over that country to begin with, they couldn't possibly have known about 9/11, and even if they did, they had neither knowledge of bin Laden's whereabouts, nor the ability to capture him.
It was all wrong, the response was inappropriate, and this is why it took ten years to finally bring that bastard to justice, and even the events surrounding his death call our government's actions into question.

The left is only doing this
because they are desperate to find money to fund the Ponzi-scheme social programs that they worship.
They have no plan to reduce spending by cutting the military.
They just want to re-direct where it goes, so they can keep Socialism alive.
They are weasels and snakes. I do not support these animals.
They forgot to mention that Ron Paul voted against it TOO.
The statement starts out...
"Congresswoman Barbara Lee, like Jeanette Rankin before her, bravely stood alone in Congress against a vote for war, the vote in 2001 for the so-called Authorization to Use Military Force..."
Where is Dr. Paul in this statement???
And there were 5 other republican congressman who voted against it.
So it starts out wrong but I like the effort and I would think Ron Paul would agree with it.
Even though it's too late, at least it condemns the unconstitutional actions our leaders took.
It is political theater but I support the idea behind the effort.
"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul
Wrong. Rep. Lee was the sole
Wrong. Rep. Lee was the sole Congressperson in either House to vote against the authorization of force. It was otherwise unanimous.
Yes, Paul voted for it, but at the same time tried to add an amendment for letters of marques and reprisal, which was tabled.

I don't think...
Ron Paul will vote for this. You can't just repeal it. It has to be replaced with an interim plan that guides disengagement of very complex political, legal and logistical relationships and realities.
This is political theater by the extreme leftist elements in congress and they know it has no chance whatsoever of passing...

You don't think?
Your flim-flam, "disengagement of very complex political, legal and logistical relationships and realities" is just more smoke-screen. Dr. Paul has said, on more than one occasion, that as Commander in Chief, he will bring our kids home as soon as he can get a ship over there.
That's _one_ of the powers that the Constitution does legitimately delegate to the President.

Why can't it just be repealed? It seems
elegant in its bold simplicity, reminds me of "We marched them in, we can just march them out." Details to be worked out by the Commander-in-Chief with advise of the military strategists.
You are confusing...
bringing the troops home with repealing the authorization to use force.
Why can't you just give your car away to a stranger without paperwork? It's easy enough right? Just hand them the keys, say bye-bye and walk off. But, if you don't make sure the title is transferred, proper signatures where appropriate and your insurance is canceled, etc. you can still be liable.
We live in a world of systems of laws and courts. If we took away the authorization to be there without disengaging our troops and political and legal relationships first then the US and US citizens would be open to all kinds of legal actions both domestic and foreign.
Again, you are confusing bringing the troops home with repealing the authorization to use force. Unfortunately, we live in a world of courts and laws. And that means we must disengage legally and politically from our entanglements first before repealing the authorization. Unless you want the US to declare that we no longer honor systems of law and are now 100% arbitrary in our actions (tyranny).

"Authorization"
He's going to bring the kids home. Given that, "authorization to use force" becomes somewhat moot, I'd say.
It's a sure thing that even if that "authorization" stays in place, he won't _use_ it, until there is a formal declaration of war from Congress, which there hasn't been since Pearl Harbor.

I like this idea
I think Mr. Paul should support this bill, as the first in a series of steps to limit our military in some way.
I do not believe that we should take any drastic steps, but rather, should take baby steps in cutting back our military presence around the world. Too much too fast will cripple our already failing economy.
My 2 cents

This is it Boys
To be honest Ron Paul would take an aweful risk in joining this effort. Will he?
If he did the Neocons could try to use it against him, but it would be a good move.

This bill would seem a natural for Ron Paul
to give his support to. It fits so well with his beliefs and would serve to set him apart from the war mongering pack.

Dq, are absolutely right about "natural". You and other DPers will enjoy listening to Ron Paul in 1998 covering this subject, re - war-powers. See this video - if not the whole of it - only from 1:13 to 1:16, just 3 minutes -

I am not optimistic though. Fortunately for us, the wars will end due to NO more money.
