Must Read: Encouragement from Dubai! Great to hear this!Submitted by gizzy on Wed, 09/14/2011 - 15:55
I have a buddy named Ahmed who graduated from Ohio State here in the US & worked with me as an oilfield engineer. He just recently moved back to Dubai 6 months ago...so I wanted to ask him about how America is perceived in the middle east. Here is our facebook convo...
Me: hey man, wanted to ask you a "foreign policy" question since you are now living over in that area.
as far as how America is viewed in that area of the world...are we viewed as good guys...or a bunch of bullies who tell people how to live their lives?
i'm sure you know the american media always wants to force americans to believe that we are "hated for our freedom" and ridiculous statements along those lines to give them ammo to engage in war with everyone. my personal belief is...if we are hated in other countries it is simply because of our actions. is that pretty accurate?
i'm extremely curious to hear this from your prospective since you are now living in an area that is affected by our excessive militarism.
Ahmed: yeah man.... I think I need a lot of space to tell you the whole story.
The US reputation over here is really terrible to be honest. No one on this side of the world trusts anything the US has to say. The US lost its credibility and is viewed as a bully, and whatever the US gets itself into is known to be of some benefit to it. I mean, if the US is in Iraq... it is for the oil and not for the freedom, and the same goes for Afaghanistan and so on.
It went to the extreme that when the US says "right", people over here tend to stay on the "left" just because...
What is even worse is that nobody thinks that the US is still the super power they think they are.
In the past, when the US is mad at you, it seemed like the whole world is mad at you as well. Now, people just side with China and they are good to go. Like Sudan for example, it has been sanctioned by the US since 1996... China is doing business in Sudan like crazy.
The other issue is the US - Israel relationship that no one really understands. The whole region with more than 20 countries reject Israel's use of force and most of them actually do not recognize Israel as a state. It was formed 60 years ago in the land of Palestine, and now the US recognizes Israel and not Palestine. People think that Israel is the US's inforcer of US policy just in a different name. When people in Gaza are sanctioned and not a single food item is allowed to enter the region, then they rebel... they are terrorists and they deserve to die by Scod missiles. Actually, this US - Israel relationship is probably the worst US foreign policy issue according to people over here. Don't get me wrong, though a lot of the people here would love to see Israel vanish, most of the people don't mind Israel if they stop being a bully.
And all that you here about Iran is trying to wipe Israel off the map is a big propaganda. All you here about muslims are terrorists... that is just Islamophobia that was fed to the American public. You know what's crazy here in Dubai.... The country's population is about 4 Million people (really tiny)... The population of citizens is about 800 Thousands... The population of westerners including Americans and Britts is about 600 Thousands... so why do CNN, Fox and the rest say that muslims hate americans and hate their freedom? You know that 1/2 of the world cranes opperate in a city that is a little larger than Rhode Island... it is pretty nice, very modern, and very free. So this American freedom bull is only in the American media.
Man, I can talk like this for days... so I better stop. let me know what you think and ask me whatever and I will be very honest with you.
It's sad to one extent...but helps drive home the fact that we are fighting the good fight!!!
let's keep fighting people! we have to save our nation!
if ya'll have any questions for Ahmed...please feel free to post them & I will ask him.
