Ron Paul says Lincoln was wrong to fight Civil War do you agree?
The neo cons are trashing our good Dr. in the message boards. You should read some of their comments. It really tick me off! Let's give it back to them!

I believe that Lincoln did not fight the Civil War primarily to free the slaves, but primarily to keep citizens from leaving a government that they no longer felt represented them.

That slavery was abolished certainly advances human freedom, but emancipation was a side-effect. The war only justifies the bloodiest war in our history if you believe:
1) that America was the one and only country that couldn't abolish slavery without mass murder and
2) that Lincoln's primary motivation to prosecute that war was to end slavery.
Both of these beliefs, in my opinion, are erroneous.

The more far-reaching legacy of the Civil War was, ironically, to contradict our own Declaration of Independence, replacing it with the precedence that free men had no right, and should be killed if they tried, to leave a government that they no longer believed represented them.

Those dead died, not "in vain", but for the greater control of a central government over its citizens. The Civil War's unfortunate result was to cause "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" to "perish from the earth".

Our government's incessant mythification of the reason for the Civil War is similar to the myths that have been fabricated for the Iraqi War. History is written by the winners, so I hope Ron Paul wins. Otherwise, your great-great-grandchild will be arguing with my great-great-grandchild that the Iraq War avenged 9/11, and secured weapons of mass destruction.

Civil War

When I was a kid in the 1960s I enjoyed reading Civil war books and subscribed to the general view that Lincoln was hero. Being originally from Kansas, I had a Union orientation. After developing a libertarian orientation around 1980 I came to realiaze that the Civil war was unjust and unnecessary. Actually all of our wars this century have been unnecessary, except for WW II, and had we not built a Pacific empire in the 1800s we might not have been in that fight either!

I am happy we have a presidential candidate unafraid to speak out.

In almost everything I agree with him!

No doubt, but this is another winable opportunity!

Vote yes! We're at 35% to 57% Come on people!

It was right to fight the Civil War

If there was no Civil War, then Blondie and Chuco would never been able to blow up that bridge in the "Good, Bad, and the Ugly". That was one of the coolest scenes in the movie.

Just kidding.

go on SC!

expectin' a win outta y'awl, now! Now that Ron Paul has dispensed with all that Yankee nonsense about the greeeeaaaat Mr. Lincoln. South Carolina can win it outright for him. Florida is gearing up to follow up with a big win as well. Mike in St. Pete

Ron Paul 'The Truth'

All the people leaving comments for this poll are calling Ron Paul and "us" a bunch of nutcases. Why do people automatically assume that everything he's saying is ridiculous? Why don't his views intrigue people? Comments like this interest me to the point that I want to look it up for myself. It turns out that he's always right too. So they're the nutcases for being knieve.

Ron Paul 2012

Because people have been spoonfed

what to believe. How many comments have you read from people horrified at the idea of not having an income tax? (As if all our roads and bridges would crumble away.) Sheeple just assume that if something is status quo it is right.

Change scares people.

Please vote people! This is another opportunity!

This may be history but once again, Ron Paul is correct.

Ron Paul wants to talk about 2007

Ron paul told the MorningJoe show to talk about the Middle East implosion rather than comments about a tall bearded dead, very dead, president.
Don't continue this thread. It's not helpful to campaign.

Thresh

This poll is interesting...

There are a lot of bashers, but still over 30% support the civil war position...mainly the southern states and some western states. It will be interesting to see how this poll shifts once Ron Paul supporters jump in.

Good riddance

Your "cracker culture" of bigotry and "Lost Cause" drivel is tearing this nation apart. You'd be a third world nothing if it weren't for the superior stock of Anglo-Saxon Northerners fighting to keep you backward barbarians in the Union.
