Michigan Primary - Jan 15
Iowa (Jan 3) and New Hampshire (Jan 8) are getting the deserved attention, since they are the first elections of this campaign. But Michigan is only a week after New Hampshire and I hope the Michigan meetups are working the crowds and that the Ron Paul supporters are out in force with signs and slimjims and doorbell ringing. It's never too soon.
The next few weeks will be fast and furious, ending in Super Tuesday, February 5th, when 10 states hold their primary elections. After that, they are more spread out on the calendar.
Michican could be trouble. Remember, it was Saul Anunzis who wanted Ron Paul excluded from the Republican debates - until a firestorm of protests got him to back down and apologize. He is the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party; and, in my humble opiniion, a creep.
Still, there are elections to be won, and Michigan is a big and important state. I wish all the Wolverines the best of luck in their campaign efforts.

RE:A January 15 Michigan Primary?
A December start with voting seems inevitable. Then what's next up for 2012 - starting in November??Michigan is likely to be the one place colder than New Hampshire that time of year. As cold in January as Iowa is hot in August.

Michigan: Map of Ron Paul results by County
Here's my MI4RonPaul primary results map, now open for collaboration:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=100671950542040968...
I've included results by county (red = best, orange = average, yellow = worst...parsed, as usual, from MSNBC), plus the locations of the Meetups and the four offices mentioned in this thread here. (Did the Grand Rapids office ever open? It's not mentioned on the MI RP website.)
We did best in Hillsdale County! We still only came in fourth overall in Hillsdale, but there, it was with 17%, right behind numbers 1-3. Ron Paul also got 13% in Lapeer. What was different there? Effort put in, or demographics?
Where did ads play? Where was canvassing done? Inquiring minds want to know.
Michigan
Hi, I am in Ann Arbor and Co-Chair for Washtenaw County for Ron Paul.
There are four HQ's to be located in Michigan. One in Detroit (open), one in Flint (open), one in Grand Rapids (opening) and one in Ann Arbor. Radio adds are playing now and TV is coming. 10,000 sign are made and in transit for what will be a very quick distribution (can anyone say January 8th sign bomb?) For info on the Michigan Field Co-coordinators, go to... www.michigan4ronpaul.com
I received a call yesterday from a PAC that is planning on running TV spots in Michigan for RP in the dense population centers of the state. (http://www.operationbroadcastfreedom.com/) Donations may help this effort.
That said, I can feel the frustration here in Michigan. It is down to the wire now and there doesn't feel like a media dominance of Ron Paul, his name or his message. But don't loose hope because none of the other candidates have made any real inroads and nobody is excited about any of them.
There is passionate support for Ron Paul, that will translate into primary votes. The other candidate supporters (not as energized) may not even show up to the polls. In fact I hope they all stay in bed.
So I recommend that all Ron Paul's supporters concentrate on getting through to all of your friends and family and any one that you can influence. Make sure they go and vote on the 15th for Ron Paul. If we all do that, I think that we have an excellent chance to win.
And for sure, if you canvas and lit drop and do all the other campaign stuff, it will all help as well.
Oh yes, and prayers couldn't hurt either.

is there a way for people like me (down in Texas) to help in Michigan financially? A chip-in for radio spots or whatever? I can do letters, too! For some reason, I think MI will be important.

Here ya go for radio spot help
I talked to the Michigan guy mentioned here but the site seems based in California, wanting to help other states from there -- sorta like you:
http://call4paul.chipin.com/operation-call-4-paul
You also can try below for the guy I worked with in CA for my Michigan spots aired before Christmas.
http://unitedforliberty.com/
Click on "TV & Radio" at upper right for more info on his generic spots. He also has the 30 sec I produced for Michigan, although I don't see it linked. But the script is in my longer radio spot post below and I know he has the produced spot because we worked on it together & I sent it to him. Good luck!
Michigan Meetup
I took part in a sign waving meetup today in Flint ,MI. Passers by were very interested about RP's stance against NAFTA and CAFTA. Those particular signs seem to get quite a few thumbs up, which I found very encouraging considering that another particular digit was used by only a very few. The Flint campaign office that had just opened was nowhere close to keeping up with the demand for yard signs, bumper stickers, and slimjims. I think that it is going to be a very interesting Primary here come Jan 15.

NAFTA & CAFTA are in 30 sec radio spots available to all
Compared to other media, radio is cheap -- $8 a spot at a station near Hillsdale, for example. It also boasts fast turnaround, enabling supporter groups or individuals to get on air in a day or two with payment up front -- if the ad is ready to go.
This ad is ready. More if you scroll down or just click here: http://www.dailypaul.com/node/17955#comment-155040
Reminder
For people who have time, but not much money, and don't live in Michigan, please write letters -- nearly 500,000 addresses to go for Michigan by January 7th --

personalized letters work!
Michigan 30 sec radio spot available to all
As a Michigan native I co-wrote, paid for and helped place this 30 sec commercial. It was carried on Michigan Radio Network's 53 stations outside Detroit for 17 rotations, Dec 17-21. I'm passing it on because radio is relatively cheap. In small markets, a small group or even one person might make a significant buy.
Maybe some of you heard it:
"Ron Paul is the only candidate for president who will restore our economy AND stop the housing 'bubbles' that help cause foreclosures. Ron Paul will end unfair trade deals like NAFTA and CAFTA, and stop runaway spending. Dr Ron Paul will bring our troops home and secure our borders. His congressional voting record proves it. Vote Ron Paul for President, Champion of the Constitution."
That text takes about 25-27 sec to read; adding the required disclaimer gets to 30 sec. I can attach a produced version, with a very Michigan voice, to anyone who wants it via email. (Leslie should have it too.) Or forget the produced version and have your local station talent announce & record it; most are glad to help. All you need do is find out a station's rates, work with sales on a schedule you can afford, work out the disclaimer (to clarify it's not an official campaign ad), pay up front, and voila -- you could be promoting Ron Paul on your local station in a day or two. Turnaround time in radio is fast!
Radio also is fairly cheap -- only $8 a spot in some markets -- but be careful. There's no sense getting only one or two exposures; radio doesn't work without repetition. My own standard is that if it can't get my spot on at least 15 times from M-F, it won't be effective enough to justify a buy.
Great Ad
That was you? Terrific Ad!!!!!! I have heard it twice on the radio but can't recall what station. The NAFTA/CAFTA emphasis really caught my attention. (We have been NAFTAD twice-lost an automotive industry job due to the trade policy) My husband wanted to hear it so he could mention it to co-workers @ FMC. Thank-you for that very effective Ad for Michigan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ron will win here
Mitt Romney has no traction here but John McCain who won here in 2000 will probably come in 2nd, Rudy and Huckaflea will be irrelevant.
Upper Peninsula
I live near the UP, getting the word out for Paul
Great -- Yoopers should love Ron Paul, eh?
Can't say I'm a U.P. expert, but its rep is that people are outdoorsy, independent, maybe akin to voters in NH. Ya think?
Radio ads might be a good way to reach a smaller population that's spread out, as in the U.P. I plan to start a post on that momentarily, with a 30 sec spot targeting Michigan that is available to anyone.
Sounds about right
.
U.P. Michigan people probably have a lot in common with people who live in NH, Maine and Vermont's Northern Kingdom. Caps with ear flaps, Woolrich shirts and the smell of Moose.
Is this a great country or what?

key to success
The key to Michigan success is the large Arab-American population there. If we clinch those, Michigan IS OURS!
This revolution is worldwide. If America fails, God help us all
Do we need to shed the love in the revolution? We have been screwed big time in New Hampshire.

Going great, but we need help from you guys
I'm the Assistant Coordinator from the largest Republican county in the state.
We have strong support throughout the state, but the great turmoil we've suffered has left us very unorganized for this stage of the game; we simply don't know who many of our supporters are. That means we can't tap them to fill our volunteer ranks. That means more than half of the precincts have vacant posts. Other counties are even worse off.
We need you guys to help us make up for lost time. If you guys can shake the bushes and find more volunteers for us, we can fill our ranks without pulling any boots off the ground.
To do this, we need two things:
1. A website to recruit and coordinate virtual phone banks to locate supporters and turn them into volunteers.
2. A website to recruit and coordinate weekend warriors from neighboring states a Operation Live Free or Die.
If we can get those things ASAP* and promote them well, we can make a substantial impact in the next two weeks.
Who's gonna step up?

Elderly Instruments
.
I don't know much about Michigan, but I know and love Elderly Instruments (in Lansing, I think). Stan Werbin is the owner and famous (and aspiring) musicians come from all over the world to buy a vintage Martin guitar or Gibson banjo, and so forth. It is a big and famous place.
The people who work there are probably familiar with Ron Paul and supportive of his campaign. If you know Stan, or know someone who knows Stan, getting in touch with him could be terrific. They could put a little Ron Paul link on the Elderly.com site, or offer Ron Paul hats, or other things to help promote RP.
As well, Elderly is a mecca for folksingers and musicians of every strip. Even just going there with slim jims and a sign or two could help. Word spreads fast in the music community.
Just a thought. Best of luck!

Yes
Elderly Instruments is a trusted source for acoustic instuments, especially of the stringed variety.

West Michigan
I don't know why they are putting their office in Detroit. Detroit is a solid democrat town. Nothing against them, but the Union people and the African Americans there vote democrat in very high percentages no matter what.
For instance, our last election for govenor, they re-elected the incumbant Jennifer Granholm who hasn't done bumpkis for Michigan since being elected. She is a Canadian native and an attorney. She can't even stop Canada dumping it's trash in Michigan landfills. Her republican opponent runs a successful large business in Michigan that employs thousands at above market wages. He may not have had all the answers, but at least he had a track record of getting things done. The geniuses in Detroit felt that it was more important to make sure some Catholic school somewhere would never possibly get a nickle of tax money (vouchers) than to try and generate a few jobs here for the few students that remain in the state...pathetic.
Oh well...my point is that WEST MICHIGAN is where you want to be. The economy is solid, most workers are non-union, and we have a large medical professional community. I have heard a few radio spots, and seen a few signs, but more would help.

Delegates
Most of the delegates are awarded on a per-district basis. In addition to making a state-wide run, we can score some easy delegates by placing a little extra emphasis in areas the other campaigns ignore.
Michigan at work
Campaign offices are opening in Flint and Detroit, HQ help has arrived (staff + radio spots) and more is coming (thousands of signs soon I hear). I'm in FL now and don't know details but took part in a call last night with 40 others on the line. More at http://michigan4ronpaul.com
Some view Michigan's primary as crippled. But votes will be counted, delegates likely will be counted later, and the absence of Obama and Edwards on the Democratic ballot could help Ron Paul among disaffected Dems -- if enough of them get the word in time.
Michigan's population of nearly 10 million is twice as much as Iowa and NH combined, so it's not cheap or easy to reach out. But personally, given Michigan's extreme foreclosure picture, labor displeasure with NAFTA and CAFTA, the limited Democratic ballot in a blue state, surprisingly strong Dem support at some rallies, and the fact that voters can choose either party when they vote Jan 15, I think it is ripe for Ron Paul support.
No Democratic in MI
Also... remember, the Dems arent campaigning here... all but Hillary pulled out of the election, so MI is ripe for the anti-war, anti-nafta vote.

I'm from Michigan and member
I'm from Michigan and member of my local meet-up. Our Detroit area office just opened. We have been out and about, however, with Jan 15th right around the corner and I'm wondering when the campaign intends to make Michigan a priority. The states economy is in the toilet and as stated above, the Michigan Republican Party chairman is not a Ron Paul fan.
I'm from South East Michigan
doing what I can but this is not looking to good to me over here. I am writing letters and would suggest letter writing to others to help get Ron Paul message out, here in Michigan. I received Ron Paul info in the mail not sure if others have received it. I plan on going to the Detroit office to get lit. and signs but would like to know what their hours are. No other signs in my neighborhood other than mine and I gave signs to two other neighbors. These people are discovering Dr. Paul on their own and stopped to ask where I got my signs. I do sign waving with another elderly gentleman but wow, is it getting cold here. That's why I decided to do letter writing. It would be nice to see a commercial on tv.
I guess I won't be happy until every single house has a Ron Paul sign in front.
Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.
S.C. 4 days later on the 19th
I understand your feelings. I think upsets in Iowa and N.H. with Ron Paul coming in top tier or even the winner (I have high hopes) will make a great difference in Michigan and South Carolina.
South Carolina is not going through the same problems as Michigan in any means when it comes to the economy. However, there is a tuff crowd in S.C. in a lot of ways. I feel there are a lot of people that will move over to the Dr. Paul campaign in South Carolina if there is a MSM upset in both Iowa and New Hampshire. I also think the same affect may happen in Michigan.
I'm not saying that the people and meetups supporting Ron Paul there don't need to be out and promoting the Revolution. I understand it is very difficult to convince people that have become very cynical of politics to get involved. Or to have a lot of people working huge amount of hours just to survive and put food on the table. Priorities get in the way of people that want to support but need to survive first.
They need to see that there is hope from those of us that see it though! It is the best motivator and convincer of all! There are a lot of folks that don't trust politics and politicians at all in South Carolina and feel they will have little affect by voting. However, every person that is convinced and motivated will make a significant difference, the revolution catches on! I've worked some off the beaten path events in just a few places like flea markets here in South Carolina and the response was amazing. There were people thanking us for being there and sincerely interested in Ron Paul after hearing about him for the first time. You do have to do everything you can without the campaigns help!
The grassroots, home-made signs and peoples passion for this candidates messages were truly what caught my attention and interest to start and not the campaign or Ron Paul. A bit of food for thought while I rant and ramble here, sorry about that.

Call RP Campaign Headquarters
.
Dawn,I am sure the RP Campaign and its staff are grateful for any help you can provide in Michigan. Maybe the person in charge of the Detroit office can call Campaign headquarters and ask for help. This would translate to money for advertising and other helpful things. I don't know for sure, but it's certainly worth a shot.
Remember, you and the others in your group are not only helping Ron Paul, you are helping the United States by your efforts. The RP folks will be happy and grateful for the support, but someone from Michigan has to pick up the phone first.
Best of luck!
