Russia may legalize cannabis for agriculture, industrial use

"Russia may soon authorize the cultivation of hemp - otherwise known as cannabis sativa - for agricultural and industrial needs, Russia's Federal Drug Control Service said on Friday.

On September 28, the country's State Anti-drug Committee will decide whether to allow the cultivation of hemp, currently prohibited in Russia."

Hemp vs Marijuanna

Hemp is a male marijuanna plant. It does not bloom nor does it go to seed. It is used for its fiber and for instance makes some of the best rope in the world. Now days it might even be woven into a bullet proof vest.

Does Anyone Remember that Russian

Does anyone remember that Russian diplomat or official who came over to speak out against the possibility of legalizing pot in the US? I seem to remember a Russian coming over here a while ago and thinking it was odd he should care about American cannibis laws. But if they were planning to legalize over there already, they would not have wanted the competition.

I would love to grow hemp

I am a medical marijuana patient here in cali and believe it to be the one thing that can and will turn around our economy. Whether that simply is cali's economy or nationwide, who really knows.

There is too much money in the jails/fines/fees/deaths/lawsuits with marijuana for the feds to want to stop.

You know your laws are upside down when a government can ban plants and animals...

Soon Mother Russia will be freer than the US!

Hemp v. Mary Jane

We all commit some errors in life. Lets just say I know quite a bit about certain plant cultivation and the processes behind it.

It totally boggles my mind on the Hemp issue.

Hemp should be planted everywhere. A marijuana grower does not want his/her plants ANYWHERE near a hemp plant. It will dilute their strain and make it worthless. Not even downrange from wind since studies show pollen travels (duh!) So, the logic is, the more industrial hemp plants planted, the lesser potency "wild" marijuana will be in nature.

There is a bill I believe by a Congressman from North Dakota regarding this. His Canadian neighbor can grow hemp, but he cannot. The billions we lose for lack of common sense and not having an industrial hemp industry makes me wanna scream!

I didn't know that, I know there's a difference between hemp and MJ, but I didn't know hemp "hurt" MJ

reefer madness was started so that the big corps could make more money off of oil rather than hemp ethanol, and nylon rope instead of hemp rope, and steel for the cars instead of hemp fiberglass.

In Soviet Russia

20 fours you!

That's interesting

I have a nice hempy hat made from a coat made in the USSR. I thought they were growing industrial hemp.

The US is retarded on this issue.

Completely retarded.

It is sheer stupidity and waste to make industrial hemp illegal.

There is no rational reason for it. Only corporatist collusion on behalf of the cotton and tobacco lobbies.

It figures Russia would do it before this government lol.

The irony totally fits.

Rediscovering Industrial Hemp. No war on drugs. Total legalize.

Countries, such as France, Spain, China, India, Korea and satellite nations of the former Soviet Union have been cultivating industrial hemp for years. A 1961 United Nations Single Convention Treaty specifically allows cultivation of cannabis for industrial purposes. and the more recent NAFTA and GATT international trade agreements recognize hemp as a valid agricultural crop. These international agreements form the basis for reintroducing industrial hemp today.
Some Western countries that had earlier followed the U.S. in banning industrial hemp, have recently changed their legislation.

Canada granted its first public research permit for industrial hemp cultivation in 1994.

"Cannabis sativa L. is the most politicized
plant in U.S. history—so much so that science too often falls to the wayside as factions attempt to either demonize or venerate the plant."

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

It should be legal for all uses in the United States. or at least the States should be able to decide what they want to do with it.

Also the war on drugs has become its own form of Corporatism/police industrial complex.

I cant believe it took me this long to see all these things.

And this is my one word answer...

for all enviromental "enthusiasts" out there.

People cannot pretend to be "environmental protectors" if they are unwilling to stand up for industrial hemp use.

This word is the only one that could actually turn our economy "green" and not completely disintigrate into mass poverty and starvation.

So anytime I hear global warming..err climate change fanatics screaming about the continued environmental destruction, I have but one word......HEMP!

Why stand against something? Why not stand FOR something? Why stand against "green house gas emissions" without standing FOR sustainable-biodegradable hemp industry?

Bit misleading title

As it's not the type of cannabis you smoke. Industrial hemp is awesome however and every nation should grow it. it grows incredibly dense and high in a small area and you can grow upto 3 crops a year.

Makes everything from clothing to plastics to even houses! And you can make ethanol from it too.

Maybe this will lead to a "Bud Race" between the US & Russia....

Need new industries

I'm all for legalizing MJ and hemp. I'm not a user, but the money wasted on incarcerating non-violent people for excercising their freedom is absurd. It will take a huge effort (and probably a generation or 2) to get these things legalized. Hemp could be a boost to our economy as it is easy to grow and is useful for a great many things. Diesel Bio-fuel could be a major industry.

It would be a shame for the

It would be a shame for the US to wait until all hippies are senior citizens. ;)

Yea..the problem is that older folks vote more and are more politically active than younger generations, and older generations are very much a NO concerning legallization... So unless there is a HUGE turnout in younger voters soon then it's going to be awhile yet. C'mon people...Vote!!! Too many in their 20's and 30's stay out of politics!

Surprising if it happens. Let

Surprising if it happens. Let them grow new multi-billion dollar businesses while the US falls ever further behind. Wonderful.... (rolleyes). Keep it up, Team Obama.

You really have to wonder why

You really have to wonder why so many countries prohibit the growing of hemp...

It's probably even better than we think it is...

I have to conclude that some major corporations must be frightened to death about it.

Hopefully we legalize it here as well.

Ask yourself this, why did

Ask yourself this, why did Ron Paul decide to make this an issue, when it was so against public opinion? What does he know that we haven't figured out yet?

The was against hemp, is like the was on terror and the war on drugs. All fake for elite to control the world.

Anyone else see the insanity of it all?

"Russia was a world leading producer of hemp, used as a source of oil, food, fibers, housing and industrial materials, until 1961 when the Soviet Union ratified the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs which declared cannabis - along with heroin - a highly toxic narcotic."

There is more

The cold war was just a theater played by the elite to sell arms and to create an us versus them culture where people can be controlled. There was never an us versus them. The same elite controlled both countries and exploited both populations. The same elite owns the UN.

We have been lied to in every single area. The history we "know" is all fable, nothing to do with the truth.

Smokescreen then and now-

Big Pharma didn't like it.
Textile corporations didn't like it.
Big oil didn't like it.
Chemical companies didn't like it.
The meme that it's this awful drug of abuse was NOTHING (other than a racist political 'vehicle') compared to the lobbying of these powerful monied interests.
Nothing much has changed politically in this country since the 1930's.

dont forget abouit prison, police, n military complex

they dont want hemp. when a cop sees a person on the street they see $200k per year if they can find a way to put it in jail.

There's a reason MJ is a schedule 1 drug...ahead of heroin

Good for Russia:

That should open a few eyes around the globe. When their economy starts to take off. Maybe we could all invest in the Russian hemp industry to offset what these clowns have done to us here.

I love my country
I am appalled by my government
