What Will Early Primaries Say About Ron Paul, The Polls & U.S.?
By PAUL LIKOUDIS
In less than two weeks, American citizens will learn how popular presidential candidate Ron Paul is, the Texas Republican who, somewhat mysteriously, ranks in the single digits in the major mainstream media’s polls while leading the rest of the Republican candidates in Internet polls, has won twice as many state straw polls as other so- called “ leading candidates,” and whose enthusiastic followers claim he will clear the field. Already his online popularity is causing fear in neo- conservative circles that he will “ spoil” the nomination process, prompting William Kristol, editor of the
Weekly Standard to predict to Fox News’ Chris Wallace on December 23 that Republicans will select Vice President Dick Cheney on the fifth ballot at their nominating convention.
According to the latest polls from New Hampshire and Iowa, Dr. Paul is barely breaking into double digits, far behind the media anointed front- runners Mitt Romney, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Mike Huckabee.
But numerous other polls not commissioned by the mainstream media — ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and FOX, show Paul running at 30-35%, with his closest followers in the mid- teens.
One such online poll, a spamproof poll conducted by AmericaOnLine ( AOL), an Internet service primarily used by upper- middleaged Internet users, running from the last week of December to the first week of January, shows Ron Paul with a commanding 33% lead over Rudy Giuliani.
Halfway through the online election, in which 122,141 users cast votes, Paul had 39,698, followed by Giuliani with 16% (19,821); Huckabee, also with 16% ( 19,216); McCain, with 14% (16,663); Romney with 13% (15,745); followed by Thompson with 7 % and Duncan Hunter with 1%.
If Dr. Paul should win in New Hampshire and Iowa with percentages similar to those, he will clearly be poised to rack up similar results in the Super Tuesday elections in February, and Americans who rely on the mainstream media for their news and opinions will be left scratching their heads wondering why they were told so many times Ron Paul hasn’t a chance.
For those hundreds of thousands of Americans who support Ron Paul, and who make themselves heard on the Internet, there is no doubt the corporate- controlled mainstream media desperately wants to keep Ron Paul out of view, a candidate who wants to end the role of the United States as the world’s policeman and roll back government intrusion in citizens’ affairs.
Determined Paul Backers
Equally determined are Paul’s backers, who “aim to stun the pundits,” as Aaron Gould Sheinin reported for the Atlanta JournalConstitution on December 26.
“ Don’t tell Ron Paul’s supporters that their man is not going be the next U. S. president,” wrote Sheinin.
“ No matter the evidence — the no more than 7% standing in early state polls, the lack of high- profile national campaign operation or the fact that the long- time Texas congressman hardly fits the modern Republican profile — Paul’s

legion of supporters believe, loudly, that their man will win the GOP nomination in 2008.
“ That enthusiasm is as strong in Georgia as anywhere and his supporters here are flat determined to deliver the state for Paul when Republicans hold their primary February 5.
“ Ike Hall, 40, Paul’s Georgia campaign director and a radiation safety officer at Emory University Hospital, believes it will happen.
“ ‘Yes, I do,’ Hall said. ‘Yes, I do. Mostly because of his phenomenally deep and diverse grassroots community. American politics hasn’t seen anything like this.’ The Paul grass- roots community is impressive. He owns the Internet, whether it’s the more than 65,000 videos supporters have uploaded to YouTube, or the more than 50,000 ‘ friends’ Paul has on Facebook, the social networking site.
“ In metro Atlanta, Paul’s backers also use Meetup. com to plan events and to communicate with other supporters. They have organized weekly rallies each Saturday at Freedom Park, sign- waving parties along busy intersections and canvassing groups to spread the word. The campaign opened its Georgia headquarters December 16.
“ But the biggest reason Paul could actually make a run at the nomination is the more than $ 6 million he and his supporters raised online December 16. The one- day event, believed to be the largest amount ever raised by an American political campaign in a single day, included contributions from more than 58,000 people. It helped give Paul a fourth- quarter fund- raising total of more than $ 12 million. That’s expected to lead the GOP pack.
“ In presidential politics, money is life. . . .
“ Supporters say the Georgia campaign is just beginning.
“ ‘His message is so strong,’ said Justin Stout, 24, who was joined by a trio of other Paul supporters to brave the chill and drizzle on a recent evening to wave Paul signs at traffic along Ga. 5 in Douglasville. . . .
“ Stout is correct in one sense. You don’t see Rudy Giuliani supporters, or Mitt Romney or John McCain supporters, standing on street corners or interstate overpasses to get attention.
“ Speak to enough Paul supporters and several things become apparent.
“• They speak of Paul in almost reverent, certainly respectful, tones. They don’t call him ‘ Paul,’ or ‘ Ron,’ or even ‘ Congressman Paul.’ It’s almost always ‘ Ron Paul,’ or ‘ Dr. Paul,’ reflecting his background as a ob- gyn.
“• Common themes emerge: honesty, strict allegiance to the Constitution and personal freedom.
“• The media is against them, or at least ignoring them.
“• The polls are wrong. . . .”
