Iranian Navy - Is CNN downplaying the situation or is Fox creating undue fear?
Submitted by Baug on Wed, 09/28/2011 - 14:52Fox and CNN tell two very different stories.
Either CNN went out to find the most dismissive Pentagon spokesman possible, or Fox News is intentionally leaving out the insignificance of this "threat".
Maybe it's both?

I didn't know the Iranian navy could row this far.

Pentagon Paranoia -- a symptom of "Being on top too long"
Pentagon Paranoia -- a symptom of "Being on top too long", the discomfiture with being unchallenged, with always being on the winning team.
In this case, the American Navy is so vast, so huge, so unjustifiably expensive, paranoia over unrealistic weaknesses sets in.
But maybe the Pentagon's gayest -- I mean, happiest -- branch of the armed services is worried their seamen -- I mean, sailors -- will cave in like the raft-full of RN girls a few years back, when an Iranian coastal frigate seized them without a fight.
"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"
On Hannity Tonite
So I tuned into Hannity earlier to see him, predictably, freak out about this. In the end, Hannity finally called on Israel and USA to join forces and take out Iran's nuclear sites. We all knew they wanted all out war in the middle east and finally he comes out and says it... we all know why this "threat" is being hyped by the right.
Irans Navy
Of course it is not a blue water navy, thats the point the Iranian Admiral was making. They intend to become a blue water navy, or so he proclaims.
Thats the point, announce your intention to project power over the seas. Can they. will they.....
A few years back Hugo Chavez was under internal strain. It first showed up when he rattled sabers with the US, threatening to project power to our shores. Could he, did he ?
Like Chavez, the Iranians are attempting to do two things -
1) Gain internal support and stymie dissent
2) Get a seat at the table with US, the ultimate power for a foreign ruler at odds with the US
Iran wants something, and it is not a war fought all over the globe with their rubber rafts and pipe dreams. It is probably more about internal problems and wanting to get the US to sit down with them, while they save face on the home front.
How does Iran deal with the US, how does talks begin ?
Either from Iranian strength or their weakness, they want to talk with strength, we want them weak.
Betcha in 3 weeks their ship will be up on blocks in Mogadishu
with graffiti on the hull waiting for ransom. If our black ops people had any sense of humor they'd pay the Somalis to paddle all the way around the Horn and hijack that piece of crap. I'm worried that it will pan out to be a suicide mission / false flag attempt to convince the Muslim world that we Bush Doctrined it to the bottom of the Atlantic. I think there's more to it than posturing. It's not as if any of Iran's allies would see this as brave Iranian defiance as the State Dept seems to be implying is the objective.
The comments on this story
The comments on this story have been amusing. The rock-ribbed hawk conservatives have laughed this off saying that the US would destroy them without breaking a sweat (which is true).
Yet these same people are so fearful of Iran getting a nuke that they're willing to go into another costly pre-emptive war.
So which is it? Is Iran a third world country with a rubber raft navy, or is it the next Soviet union?
Exactly.
Iran only has ~21 ships capable of reaching the US, and half of those are submarines. Diesel submarines. Their largest/longest range missiles could hit us from the Atlantic...but cmon, we could swat them away - literally.
I think this whole demonstration will be a good thing for Ron Paul, and for 2 reasons.
1) The American people will get to see how weak and ridiculous the Iranian armed forces are.
2) They'll probably get offended at Iran's presence near us, and it'll be a prime example for RP as to what we do wrong overseas. I only wish they had troop carriers and tanks for this little venture.

Iran does not have a "blue water navy"
There are only a handful of nations in the world who could actually do this without a high risk of embarrassment and/or failure. It's not an issue of Iran "gassing up" in Venezuela, as FOX News puts it. Even if it happens, it wouldn't be the key enabler as Elliot points out--it's the replenishment and refueling part. Seems likely to me that FOX inserted that part about Venezuela just to see if they can contribute to two new wars in the same article. Also, even if Iran did succeed in sending a few ships to the western Atlantic, it wouldn't be an issue of "attacking" us, it would be a strategic signal (and fodder for Sean Hannity's war-mongering). Anyway, in ten years it might be different, but the threat that Iran now poses to us outside the middle east is entirely asymmetrical (Hezbollah). If we elect Ron Paul, that threat will be minimized.
Take a look at Wikipedia.
Take a look at Wikipedia. Their fleet is small. Many of their ships are 25 to 50 years old. They have some subs, but they're diesel, so I doubt if they have much range, or can stay away from port for very long. Sure they can be effective at patrolling smaller waterways against smaller vessels, but I can't imagine they would fare very well in the open Pacific.

Who really cares. More
Who really cares. More propaganda to scare the willies out of America. But it would be a great time for the Iranians to attack. Do we even have any warships left here or are they all patrolling the Middle East and China?

Gee, I hope they aren't armed with boxcutters
If they were, they might hijack some of our cruise ships and crash them into oil rigs.

This is an easy call, Fox
This is an easy call, Fox News wants to attack and kill anybody and everybody (warmongers). I do not like CNN but I agree with them on this.
Absolutely right! Like the
Absolutely right! Like the Iranian navy cvould ever be a threat to anybody! Foxnews fans are elderly scared old people.
It is all propaganda
Why do you even listen to CNN or Fox.
Don't you listen to Ron Paul when he speaks at all.
Remember what he said about Iran and the CIA etc..
You guys...
Either you are neo cons infiltrating or you are just not paying attention...
Iran Navy
Isn't Iran's population about 70 per cent under the age of 25?
Heck, they could sail and row over lol
Seriously, attacking them would not be any cake walk. Nothing like galvanizing a population...all 80 million of them.
p.s. 10 years ago many went out and bought gas masks lol

I agree, a war with Iran
I agree, a war with Iran would be worse than our current wars combined. Their military does have discipline regardless of the shape of their equipment. However, their military doesn't have the ability to come to us, not even by sea.
I've decided
that both foxnews and cnn are turds.

Is Iran really this dumb?
Is Iran really this dumb? What could they possibly gain from this? Isn't everything already on edge as it is?

If Iran's navy tried to attack us (with whatever pathetic bombardment they could hit us with) they would be wiped out in two seconds. End of story.

Losing the 6th fleet on behalf of Israel is not just stupid...but it'd probably be well deserved.
