Ron Paul Says Real Unemployment Figure is 20%

(CNN) – A week after proposing his economic recovery plan, Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul said Sunday that the true unemployment rate in the United States is higher than the 9.1% estimated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"I think the downturn in the economy occurred in the year 2000," Paul told CNN, adding that there have been no new jobs since then "and yet we've had a 30 million increase in population."

"Just go out and talk to the people - unemployment rate in the true numbers (is) over 20%, so there's been a depression," Paul said after an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Just visit shadowstats.com. If you measured unemployment the same way the government measured it in 1990, it's 22% and inflation is about 7.5%. That means the real Misery Index is close to 30%, not 13% as we are being told.

The way the government calculates inflation is truly evil. They use a basket of goods, but they change it to suit them. For example, they used to include steak, now it's hamburger. They also now include flat screen TVs. What good does it do granny on Social Security who already can't afford her food bill if a 42" flat screen has dropped from $1000 to $500 while bread has increased nearly 20% in that same time period?

RP citing U6 instead of U3

Here's a great explanation of the regularly reported U3 (Unemployment rate 3) vs. U4, U5, and U6
http://youtu.be/vUOiOi-XaoQ

U3 excludes those unemployed beyond the 4 week window, the marginalized, and the underemployed.

It's an incredibly misleading indicator because it allows for a lower official unemployment rate while real unemployment grows.

The reported unemployment

The reported unemployment figures are a complete sham. They only reflect those folks receiving unemployment compensation. As we all know, most of the unemployed have 1. Run out of unemployment benefits, or 2. Never qualified for unemployment benefits in the first place.

More informative

If you want to understand unemployment, it might be more informative to look at the statistics for the number who are employed in working ages rather than unemployment. There are very few employed people in this country.

Conservative estimate.

And where the heck did M3 go?

If you use the figures pre-clinton years it would be 22%

I believe Dr. Paul said this on the "Freedom Watch" awhile back..

At the height of the great depression the unemployment rate was between 18-28%, but our money was backed by the amount of Gold held in reserve at the treasury..No?

We are in a deep depression and there is no end in sight..It is going to get so bad you won't be able recognize this country..How about 40-50% unemployment and hyperinflation over 30% for starters.

No jobs, no money, no future, no dick..

Paul Craig Roberts wrote an article about this few months ago

Paul Craig Roberts a former high ranking official in Reagan administration said that according to how the unempoloyment level was measured during Reagan in early 80's the unemployment would be now at 23%.
