Sunday I convinced a ninth grade honors student College is a scamSubmitted by wraiththirteen on Mon, 10/24/2011 - 12:25
Sunday morning I was at church helping with some of the elementary age children (preaching, teaching, praying, singing, shouting, playing etc) when one of their siblings came to pick them up. I hadnt seen him in a while and asked how he was doing and what he was up to. he told me he was good, he was in ninth grade and he was an honors student. I immediately asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, since honors students are the ones that want to go to college somewhere. He told me he wanted to be a realtor. I said that realtors do not require a college degree, since they are basically salesmen and if he got the book "how to win friends and influence people" by dale carnagie that he would get a better education for that job for 9 dollars than spending 90,000 dollars for college. He looked shocked (I kinda expected this since he has been told all his life that if you go to college you will be successful) so I told him I know you have been told all your life if you go to college you will be successful, right. He said yeah. I said that my sister in law has a masters degree in elementary education and is a first grade school teacher, well her and my brother have a 200,000 dollar mortgage on a house, but they pay more on her student loans than their house, but a college degree is required for her job so it might be worth it, but the job you want requires no college degree so stay out of debt. If you want to be a doctor, lawyer, or work for government (since they usually require a college degree) then go ahead to college but if not stay away since the only thing you will get is debt. and if you want to learn something you can usually learn it on the internet.
at this point he is thinking really hard and said that his second choice is to become a broker, I told him to look up peter schift and told him that in the next four years that if he studied behind that guy when he turns 18 he will be more than ready for that job, and all of schifts info can be found on the internet, and if worse comes to worse, he can find his books at amazon.com.
I also told him to look up john taylor gatto and explained that some of the the problems with college is the fact that college is inherently a government job that prepares people for the business world and they tend to work significantly differently.
at this point he had to go but was clearly awakened and mad and telling me that if what I said was true that college was a scam and why is he doing all this work in honors so he can go to college and a get a degree that wont help him. I simply said look up John taylor gatto, peter schift and get the book "how to win friends and influence people" by dale carnagie.
