Does anyone Else Despise Sports (Obsession)?
Submitted by 20sFreedom on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 14:41I am so sick of the ignorant sheople being obsessed with sporting events. Give them a baboon and a ball and they care not about the eroding of the Constitution or the future of this nation. All they want is government handouts, more "protection" against "terrorist," and the World Series... It's pitiful. WAKE UP! I had to write about it, then come rant. You can read the rest of my thoughts below:

I love the Super Bowl
It cleans everybody off the ski hill.
It is sad that "some" (not DPers) people can name everyone on a football team but don't know who is running for President.
Great article
An excerpt So true:
'The sad reality is that much of today’s masculinity is experienced only vicariously through a variety of sports teams and personalities. Instead of personally flexing our muscles for God and country, freedom and liberty, or home and hearth, we punch the air and beat our chests over touchdowns and home runs (even though we had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with them ourselves).'
The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

Obession In General
To quote my dad:
I think that this applies to all unshared obsessions. Sports are just a particularly popular obsession among many people. In order to be a good communicator you always have to realize that other people often do not share all of your obsessions.
What do I hate about sports?
I hate it when your team (Dallas Cowboys) is in the toilet and instead of just being able to enjoy games..I have to cheer against all the people ahead of them. Or maybe that's why I like having teams that constantly blow it early..gives me more games to watch and more teams to cheer for...just because I'm hoping that the ones in front of us can learn to suck even worse than we do.
Like right now...I'm sore as hell from working yesterday and can't hardly move..so I resort to watching football, no volume, just have it on. I get to cheer for the hapless and helpless Miami Dolphins to somehow magically beat the Giants..then we'd all be tied in our race for the playoffs. And if the Cowboys beat the Eagles tonight, which I will be missing, then we will be back on track...yet still suck.
I'm such a baboon....the world will never be free with people like me running around. Sorry I let you all down. I like drinking beer and cruising the rivers and trails on my four wheeler or 4runner too. I guess that doesn't exactly count for liberty activities either. Surely the Romans had off road chariots too.
Sports are meant to be played not watched
Played the traditional sports all my life. Used to never miss an NFL weekend. I think football is a beautiful game, but that is just it , it is a game. It dawned on me about 7 years ago as I looked around the sports bar I was in, that these people are obsessed. They are being distracted from what is going on in the world. It hit me that this really is bread and circuses. I see it in my own family members.
Another thing that annoys me is that the "experts" are frequently pencil necked geeks who never played the sports they are watching or commenting on.
Go out and participate in a sport instead of sitting on your rear and watching.
Preach it!
Preach it!

Participating better than spectating
Applies to athletics, politics, community, business, family...

Please provide disclosure...
If you are going criticize sports and fans, please disclose the following as a prerequisite:
1) Which team were you last a fan of? This can help us better understand why the sour grapes.
2) Did you lose a ton of money gambling on sports with a bookie?
3) Have you ever been a sports fan? If not, you probably are unable to understand the joy that it may bring.
4) Are you from Cleveland or Buffalo? (obvious implication)
5) Were you ever ignored or jolted by a lover that greatly enjoyed sports? (jealousy can be crazy)
I don't want to imply that people who hate sports are sore losers or jealous mates as that is only true most of the time. The rest usually just don't get it.
END the FED before it ENDS US
Think, then post...
Read the article, stop spewing lies. I didn't criticize sports or fans, just the pitiful obsession with a GAME. I'm just intelligent enough to see sports for what they are, a mind-numbing idol. What else explains the astounding fact that millions of supposedly intelligent human beings feel that the athletic exertions of total strangers are somehow consequential for themselves?

who cares what you think. I
who cares what you think. I hate nascar, but I recognize that some people love it. Good for them. Isn't this about Liberty? Do what you like as long as you do not harm others or their property? You don't like it, don't watch. Many great lessons in life are learned from athletics. So in your opinion if you like to watch sporting events you also must like government handouts, more protection against terrorists etc. Talk about a closed mind.
Oh how I wonder, oh how I worry
And I would dearly like to know

Sports
Well baseball is over and basketball is in the toilet. Football is about half over. Hockey is a non-issue for the most part.
Things are looking up ! :D
p.s. perhaps the PBA will make a big comeback lol

Sports appeal to our most
Sports appeal to our most basic natural instinct as tribal groups. Think about it...all the most popular sports are team sports...football, soccer, basketball, hockey, which involve two opposing "tribes" invading their opponent's territory and claiming it in the form of scoring points (think planting flag). In the sport of baseball, a player gains respect by taking a lap through enemy territory and returning home safely. Sports appeal to our most primitive instincts which is why they are so popular in every culture and why men like sports more than women and why tennis will never be a wildly popular sport.
ahh But the women of tennis..
hhmmmmmmmm I am a fan.
yes...I never said I couldn't
yes...I never said I couldn't appreciate watching women's tennis. Now if they could just stop with the weird grunting sounds...
The NBA Lockout
Maybe it will wake some sheeple up.
Too bad the NFL Lockout ended.
If you don't like sports,
If you don't like sports, don't watch em! Simple as that. Don't try to make the rest of us look bad who enjoy sports. Go Niners!

Go Niners!
whoooooooooooooooo! a fellow fan! I love sports and to see the best, you got to watch the best!
Go
Go Seahawks!!
actually....
The 9ers are prolly gonna' win the division this year, they're a rough team on both sides of the ball. Hopefully Pete will draft a franchise QB.
Go whoever has the worst record!
I need my Cowboys to have a chance at a wild card at the end of the season..hahaha
Nice well written
article, thanks for sharing it. Bread and circuses worked before and it is working now. Humans are so predictable, I guess that is why we always wind up slaves.

When you look at the
When you look at the political landscape as an average person who is not awake to what is going on. What do you think the average person thinks when they see a bunch of corrupt politicians like Charlie Rangel, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney?
I wouldn't want to spend my time listening to a bunch of idiots like that.
I didn't either for a long time, till I found Ron Paul.
Generalizations are also pitiful
All they want is government handouts, more "protection" against "terrorist," and the World Series... It's pitiful.
It's true that the bread and circuses help keep the sheeple asleep. But not all sports fans are idiots. Let's be gracious, shall we?
Nobody could put it better..
it's one thing pointing out the obvious bread and circuses..it's another to generalize and judge everyone who likes sports. If you look at the replies this OP puts out..it's almost as if they apologize for making it sound like that..then the last sentence is almost always some snarky remark that just shows their true intentions. A DPer below points out that they like to watch games with their kids who likes sports...the OP comes back with the shitty remark that they were teaching them to idolize athletes. So really? We can't watch a game without idolizing athletes?
Totally insane....Sorry..it pissed me smooth off. Boomer Sooner!
The Gladiators compete for food
It has been this way from the start of man.We do it in our own back field,Our own out field,We do it for a few yards at a time, then we send them off to another country to do it all over again at greater odds and rules of the game.
Yep,This is exactly what our kids are trained to do,It has not changed in centuries,And if we do not wake up it will continue for centuries. But for our personal entertainment the Gladiators will compete for us to an end,Both domestic and foriegn.
We are raising and supporting nice little gladiators aren't we?
"You go and carry off the enemy's land; the enemy comes and carries off your land"-Ancient Sumerian tablet
Sounds like one mans perspective..
I know people that can't get past the idea of competition and team sports...I think they are crazy and shallow. My 2 year old loves to box as does my 5 year old girl, does that mean I am teaching them to be gladiators training to go off to war for my tyrannical government? Or could it be that they are learning to defend themselves, working coordination, staying in shape, and maybe even gaining a little self confidence?
I will go with the latter. The whiny nonsense that you people keep spewing about sports is just plain ignorance. Some people don't like sports...who cares. I'm sure you and the others like things that I don't..and somehow if I was looking to be judgmental, I'm sure I could find some way to equate your likes and pleasures to the downfall of our country and ways of life.
There just isn't any reason to do that..but I can't control how others think nor do I wish to. It isn't exactly liberty and freedom like now is it. I do find it quite amusing that it is the supposed liberty/freedom loving sports haters that have all the hateful snarky judgmental things to say about others. Just proves their true love of freedom and liberty for...well at least those who think just like them.
I don't buy that at all. What
I don't buy that at all. What most of you people who have never played a sport in your lives is this. Sports are fun.
I played Baseball and football. Played College football and was good enought o be invited to camp by the Denver Broncos.
I played because it was fun. what do you do for fun? So those of us who see the benefits of athletics are gladiators? come on dude.
Oh how I wonder, oh how I worry
