Considering the viewership of

Considering the viewership of this show, I think this was a net positive for RP. They clearly separated him out from the rest of the jokers. I have a lot of respect for Dr. West, but would personally like to debate him about how he is a libertarian that supports a progressive tax. Obviously, there are some major problems there with the government treating citizens as individuals. There should be no distinction based on gender, age, ethnicity -- so why should there be a distinction upon economic caste?

That is not much of a compliment imo. The Prof. was more respectful.

Bill is going to have lots of nightmares in about 20 years imo. ie. when his conscience catches up to him.

Not sure what you guys are expecting

I thought both Maher and West were both really nice with regards to Paul. Especially compared to the other candidates that were brought up.

Both Maher & West have a history of saying some of the nastiest things possible about politicians. When I read some of the comments below I was expecting the worst, but I think Paul got off basically unscathed, especially when West talked about how much stuff the Good Dr. is RIGHT about.

I'm not crazy

The "craziest" thing about Ron Paul is this free market stuff.

Popular misconceptions about the free market persist, even after four years with Ron Paul all over the media.

Why is that? I have little interest in economics, but even I found The Road to Serfdom persuasive and logical. The market will always be subject to popular demand; with a free market, that demand is purely and efficiently met; without that, you get meddling by more-or-less corrupt officials. Simply as that.

Why do people want intermediaries telling them what they can and cannot buy? What is everyone so afraid of? Haven't we learned that the bureaucracy CANNOT function to protect the planet? How long will this myth about bureaucrats potentially serving as earth mothers persist? Most of the US waterways are wrecked- isn't it time to say "Uncle"?

We NEED a new paradigm, and the small government, free market system coupled with straight accountability is the way to go.

Bill did not display

his usual enthusiasm he once had for Ron Paul. I could tell with his tone he was hedging his bets. Lumped Ron Paul with all the RINO kooks? C'mon. With shout-outs like that, who needs enemies?

Beware of the likes of Maher, Hannity, Rush, and so on. They will occasionally get cozy with Ron Paul--Just so they can steal his best positions, and turn around and then claim they promoted them long before the good Doctor did so. Like the Tea Party, they will co-op Ron Paul for their own purposes.

Hannity will attack Ron on foreign policy issue, and Mahler will attack him on the domestic one.

I have heard Bill enough to

I have heard Bill enough to know he likes Ron. He brings him up as maybe a little bit crazy but I tell ya..he likes him. :)

Billy Boy needs an education

Calling Ron Paul crazy? Really?

Is it crazy to spend $38 billion in gov't. funding on solar energy so the Chinese can beat our businesses? They take our technology and produce it.

Is it crazy to give GM billions to close their plants, lay-off US workers, escape the polluted sites they've left behind through bankruptcy protection, and move their factories to China to compete against our auto industry?

Is it crazy to haave GE's Immelt as Jobs Czar while he gets gov't funding to build nuclear plants, close our clean coal plants and move thousands of jobs to China with the GE X-Ray division?

Is it crazy to chase our manufacturers to China where they have to give China their technology which then gets used against us to kill our productivity?

Is it crazy for Ron Paul to want to abolish the FED/IRS Complex? Is it crazy that Ron Paul wants to abolish debt slavery and tax bondage that has enslaved all Americans since 1913?

This sun-ofabitch needs and education!

As for Bill Maher, I've

As for Bill Maher, I've actually heard him criticize Obama on previous shows, but given his lack of a backbone, I suspect he'll continue to support him.

I used to enjoy shows like Real Time and The Daily Show, for the comedic value of mocking our political system (and our system is damn hilarious), but their ignorance and poor understanding of history and economics makes it almost impossible to watch anymore.

Dr Cornell West, a Libertarian?

If he's a libertarian, then that means I must be a Marxist.

Most likely, he is a "social libertarian"...

...like Noam Chomsky.

"I support the Declaration of Independence and I interpret the Constitution."

"Libertarian socialists believe if freedom is valued, then society must work towards a system in which individuals have the power to decide economic issues along with political issues. Libertarian socialists seek to replace unjustified authority with direct democracy, voluntary federation, and popular autonomy in all aspects of life,[33] including physical communities and economic enterprises.
Many libertarian socialists argue that large-scale voluntary associations should manage industrial manufacture, while workers retain rights to the individual products of their labor.[34] As such, they see a distinction between the concepts of "private property" and "personal possession". Whereas "private property" grants an individual exclusive control over a thing whether it is in use or not, and regardless of its productive capacity, "possession" grants no rights to things that are not in use.[35]"

Sounds like just another approach to central planning and communism to me. Not at all my understanding of Libertarianism.

Right right. I'm so used to

Right right.

I'm so used to pundits dumbing down political and economic philosophies into parties, that I forget there are actually intelligent people, like Dr. West, on TV from time to time.

I do see a lot of flaws in libertarian socialism though; lack of property rights just for starters. If he does actually believe in anarchist philosophy, he sure has a funny way of showing it.

In an ideal situation, "social libertarianism" would be...

...voluntary, and not "forced at gun point". Some of the socialist European countries came close to this; such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, etc. But where this got started, and is an example of this actually working, was early first century Christianity, which was "voluntary communism" (detailed in the book of Acts, chapters 4 and 5). The only problem was, once you made an agreement to hand over your wealth to the apostles, you couldn't change your mind. If you did, you were put to death by God.
