The Night Closes in on our Culture

One of the best essays I've ever read about the state of affairs- by Fred Reed. Enjoy! ~

"The night closes in. Read the surveys of what children know, what students in universities know. Approximately nothing. We have become wanton morons. As the intellectual shadows fall again, as literacy declines and minds grow dim in the new twilight, who will copy the parchments this time?

No longer are we a schooled people. Brash new peasants grin and peck at their iPods. Unknowing, incurious, they gaze at their screens and twiddle, twiddle. They will not preserve the works of five millennia. They cannot. They do not even know why.

Twilight really does come. Sales of books fall. Attention spans shorten. Music gives way to angry urban grunting. The young count on their fingers when they do not have a calculator, know less by the year. We have already seen the first American generations less educated than their parents. College graduates do not know when World War One happened, or what the Raj was. They have read nothing except the nothing that they read, and little of that. Democracy was an interesting thought.

Ours will be a stranger Dark Age than the old one. Our peasants brush their teeth and wash, imagine themselves of the middle class, but their heads are empty...."

The first step is realizing we've ALL been dumbed-down

It didn't skip you or me or any of us. Defeating it means countless hours of true research--not watching 4 minute you-tubes or reading the drudge report. Only the desire tolearn can save us. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things they supress. I'm currently building a collection of pre-1900 textbooks, catechisms and primers for homeschooling my daughter because my research has shown me that since 1900 the drive to create dumb drones (computers and copulators) has been in effect. Since 1950 it's been in high-gear. Beat it by reading mostly non-fiction from waaay back and constantly questioning the world around you---but for God's sake, DON'T try to work out your own explainations--you're dumb, remember.

Yes, I know what you mean about the value of pre-

1900 thinking, and there's a lot to collect! Don't forget about project Gutenberg--they have the good stuff.

There has been a revival of classical and Christian scholarship in the past 15 years, and there are some excellent new authors, publishing houses, and textbooks available, now. A new series of history textbooks I have seen and admire is called Omnibus (1 - 6, for grades 7 through 12) and is published by Veritas Press. I have never seen the like, and because of how ignorant we are in this day and time, you (as I do) would find the 7th grade text very challenging and enlightening, not to mention the rest.

The kids history stories by Jacob Abbot are being reprinted, and G.A. Henty's historical novels (for age 12 - 16) have all been reprinted, so far as I know.

Happy rabbit trails!

Relax :)

With all due respect, Mike - Intelligence is a natural gift. The inclination and the power to THINK is what gets aggressively crushed by our public indoctrination and cultural programming. But the ability is natural and needs the freedom to flourish. It's like a muscle. I think it's wonderful that you are collecting a great treasure trove of great works. And I agree with the author that the internet is a miraculous resource of access.

"Dumbness" is really dullness. The intellect is dulled, dwarfed - maybe permanently. The power of the intellect is more resilient and natural than you have given it credit here. And yes, some of us escaped "dumbness/dullness". I paid a heavy price in my youth for it. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum did, indeed, escape it.

That includes EVERYONE..

...including police, state legislators, judges, etc, who out of their ignorance will sellout to the minions of the NWO for increasingly less graft.

In other words, because of ignorance, both of the people taking the graft and those grafted, it costs the NWO less and less each year to buy corruption.

Orthodox Christianity ROCKS! (is a rock).

Your link to Ancient Faith Radio currently offers a profound address about the decline of the West.

Amen

None of us alive know true freedom. Our great grandparents maybe, but none of us alive today. And all of us today have been tainted by propaganda, and are dumber for it.

*May the only ones to touch your junk, be the ones you want to touch your junk.*

American are simply getting to be to dumb to be free.

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.
Thomas Jefferson

Sadly ignorance is winning. And that Herman Cain didn't stay a simple "vanity candidate" but is being taken seriously with NO government experience, no plans that make any sense, a guy who BRAGS that he knows nothing about foreign policy.

But as Ann Coulter says "Our blacks are better than their blacks," and after four years of being told they would never elect a black person out ignorant Republicans are going to prove that they can - even if he has ties to all the threats to our freedom and no intelligence whatsoever.

Since this scandal has broken out Herman Cain is doing better than ever. The ignorant masses have found one of OUR blacks, who speaks well - to show off.

I am truly afraid for America.

Your writing is so good

it's a shame you haven't corrected that glaring typo yet- you mean, Americans are TOO dumb to be free. Not "to dumb to be free." :)

You are aware, I hope, that once a reply is written

the edit button is no longer activated?

So I cannot correct the typo "yet".

Also, "out ignorant Republicans "

should be "our ignorant Republicans." However, some good points in this post.

New Hampshire and Ecuador.

Drat. Nabbed by the typo police,

again.

Let me add some fuel to this fire of truth:

My daughter is a sophomore in college planning to become a Nurse Anesthetist. The first two years are (unfortunately) general-ed courses and this semester she is taking Sociology 101.

Today, as a CONTINUED study of racism and sexual harassment (which is all that has been discussed so far with only 4 weeks to go) they watched the movie Crash. After trying to endure the filthy language (100+ 'f' words) laced with heavy doses of sexual perversion she finally walked out of the class when the sex-scenes were just too uncomfortable for her to sit through.

Not a prude but such subject matter violated her moral boundaries. She chooses NOT to watch those kinds of films. And yet, she must endure this teacher who constantly discusses highly sexual subjects that invariably degrade women.

THIS is what we are paying the college for - the watching of amoral movies, the constant lesson that the white man is very bad indeed, and that sex is the only thing that matters to the male - the women be damned.

No one in her class can tell you what is going on in the world politically or economically. But they can tell you what perverted new rap song is popular or what their friends are doing on Facebook.

It is truly shocking. The future of this country is in dire straits.

We homeschooled our daughter - she knows how to think and has a good moral foundation. I highly recommend you all do the same - this country needs a future with at least some intelligent, moral leaders.

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.
Ron Paul - The Revolution

Setting a good example is a far better way to spread ideals than through force of arms. Ron Paul

Props to you for

Props to you for homeschooling. There is absolutely not one single reason in the world for sending ones children to the statist indoctrination institutions that passes for schools these days. 8 hours a day of Nintendo on the couch, while hardly ideal, soundly beats the kind of child abuse that public schools dish out.

Great!

Thanks

Dark age

Has already failed because I was asleep and now I have a desire to learn all I can, My Kid will learn all she can with my help and be smarter then her parents.

Democracy

It's not an interesting thought, it is a proven failure. Just my two cents.

WTF?...haha...here it is AGAIN...good call...

"Dumocracy"

...We are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC for FKs sake!!!

So, by all means, speak about our country and it's problems, but refer to it as a Democracy.

Thank You!

You always find very good posts,This is a topic that truly needs more investigation. Throughout history, cultural Priority break downs have been the end of great civilizations. This is truly the root of our current problems.

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

Natural Law. is the answer.

this was why I chose Deism. it is compatible with all faiths, or even the lackthereof. to answer a question that I never responded to....

We Hold These Truths.

thanks for posting. I had clicked the link and then moved on to other tab-s. On return I heard the opening lines and was amazed where & how I reached here. I had forgotten, so I searched and came here, to offer thanks.
I will post this link on another thread where it will be very useful, the "In God We Trust Thread" thread. It will be a good reminder & home-work, to bear in mind. The Natural Law is so well explained in this video talk.

Or look at it a different way.

Most of what children are expected to learn is virtually worthless information, anyway. The history books are full of lies. The science books are full of errors and constantly need to be updated (anyone remember when the Food Pyramids recommended 11 servings of starches, including white flour products, per day?) English classes typically force random, boring excepts of dry literature down kids' throats.

Is it any wonder they are disenchanted?

We need an overhaul.

I just love Fred Reed

He is so right on and so irreverent.
