Ron Beats Rudy? Editorial in this Weekend's Wall Street Journal
I'm traveling today and picked up the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. To my pleasant surprise, the editorial on page A10 is titled Ron Beats Rudy? It is the exact same editorial by Andrew Cline that Jane posted the other day from the NH Union Leader. What is so surprising is that there is abosultely nothing negative, at least that I can see. Go out and pick up the Weekend Wall Street Journal and show this editorial to anyone you know that is still on the fence!
Ron Beats Rudy?

Wall Street Journal
For several hours on Sunday, more than a dozen Ron Paul volunteers stood in snow drifts in the rain outside the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester waving at last-minute Christmas shoppers and handing out hundreds of yards signs.
The campaign doesn't know how many people participated because, as with so many Paul rallies, this one was organized entirely by fans not officially associated with the campaign.
"We told them to take Christmas Eve and Christmas off, and next thing we know they're doing a sign wave at the mall," said Jim Forsythe, a self-employed engineer and former Air Force pilot from Strafford, N.H., who independently organizes volunteer efforts for Ron Paul.
That spontaneous grassroots support is why Mr. Paul, an obstetrician from Lake Jackson, Texas, could pull off a stunner on Jan. 8 and place third in New Hampshire's Republican primary. If he does, he would embarrass Rudy Giuliani and steal media limelight from John McCain and Mitt Romney, who are battling for first place.
Many Republican operatives in New Hampshire, even those affiliated with other campaigns, think Mr. Paul is headed for an impressive, double-digit performance. That he has been polling in the high single digits for months is discounted, because the polls may be missing the depth of his support.
Why? For starters, he appears to be drawing new voters. Polls that screen for "likely" voters might screen out many Paul supporters who haven't voted often, or at all, before. Many of Mr. Paul's supporters appear to be first-time voters. They will be able to cast their ballots because New Hampshire allows them to register and vote on the day of an election.
Even Mr. Paul's New Hampshire spokesman, Kate Rick, is an unlikely political activist. She grew up in a political family in Washington, D.C. and says "I swore I would never work in politics." She only changed her mind after finding Mr. Paul, a candidate she says she can finally believe in. "Most people I know in the grass roots are like that," she said. "My closest friends have never voted before, and they're die-hard Paul people now."
There is another reason to discount the polls on Mr. Paul. The one thing that unites his supporters is a desire to be left alone, not only by government, but by irritating marketers and meddling pollsters, too. Mr. Paul's supporters might well be screening their calls and not-so-inadvertently screening out pollsters. Still, some observers of the primary race here downplay this support, noting that a lot of the activists who show up in news stories are not state residents and won't be voting.
It is true that Paul supporters from New York, New Jersey and even California are prominent at campaign rallies. But volunteers and campaign staffers say that, although out-of-state volunteers often are the most flamboyant and can attend day-time rallies while local supporters are at work, they do not outnumber the locals.
"Ninety percent [of his supporters] are from New Hampshire," says Jared Chicoine, Mr. Paul's New Hampshire coordinator. Keith Murphy, a former Democratic campaign worker from Maryland who owns Murphy's Taproom in Manchester, has held several Paul rallies at his restaurant, which has become a regular hangout for the Paul crowd. When the candidate shows up, about 75% of the activists at an event are from out of state, he said, but on other nights it's about 50-50.
Regardless of where they are from, organizing Mr. Paul's supporters is a challenge. "This is entirely grassroots oriented to the point that the official campaign structure seems almost lost, to the point that they don't know what to do with all these people," Mr. Murphy said.
On their own initiative, and at their own expense, Paul volunteers hold rallies, print and distribute brochures and even purchase ads. "I pick up the paper and say, wow, there's an ad and it's not my ad," Mr. Chicoine told me.
The buzz surrounding the Paul campaign is reminiscent of the grassroots campaign Democrat Carol Shea-Porter waged against Republican Rep. Jeb Bradley last year. Polls showed Mrs. Shea-Porter trailing by 19 points in October. With almost no money and no support from the Democratic establishment, she came from behind and beat the congressman 51% to 49%.
Many are wondering if the polls are similarly missing Mr. Paul's momentum. Mrs. Shea-Porter and Mr. Paul have very different ideas about how to use the power of government, but both strongly oppose the war in Iraq. And Mrs. Shea-Porter ran last year as a fiscal conservative, so it's possible Mr. Paul could win over many Republicans who voted for her last year.
Mr. Chicoine and other Paul supporters say that, contrary to conventional wisdom, most of Mr. Paul's backers are Republicans, not independents. But everyone agrees that Mr. Paul draws an unusual mix of libertarians, fiscally conservative Democrats, conservative Republicans, home-schoolers, vegans, gambling aficionados, anti-abortion activists and others who want the government to butt out of some aspect of their lives.
But will they get out to vote on primary day?
"I've never seen a group of people that are this energetic about a candidate," Mr. Murphy said. "It's something else."
That sentiment is shared by Republicans who have observed numerous New Hampshire primaries. The level of enthusiasm for Mr. Paul is remarkable, they say. It transcends the state's Libertarian base (about 4% of the electorate). And by many accounts, Mr. Paul's backers here are more energized and committed than are supporters of Mr. Giuliani, who may enjoy inflated poll numbers because of his celebrity status.
National attention is focused on the horse races between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and between Messrs. McCain and Romney. But the shy obstetrician from Texas could be the surprise story of the New Hampshire primary.

Jane's Note: Cline initially dismissed this candidacy yet is now asking the question, is Paul going to trump Rudy? Amazing progress we've made and a good indication of the recognition of support in this state.

Thanks Mike!
There was another one today that I posted too, from the WSJ, that had similar questions about RP beating Rudy in Iowa and NH and it talked about polling. I posted it in the forums.
At least the media believes "If RP beats you, you are not viable
Rudy now knows that, if he is beaten by Ron Paul in Iowa or NH, the media will never let him forget that.
Here is an attack article on Ron Paul asking that he be included in the forum in NH because "he loses every debate":

I agree with the article when it says that McCain got his surge by directly attacking RP's non-interventionism.
I am hoping that the RP campaign will attack McCain's specific record on trying to stop free speech on the Internet. McCain is Mr. Internet Regulation in Congress. He recently introduced a bill called the "Save Our Children from Online Exploitation Act" which would have forced the webmaster of this forum to check everyone's email address on the sex offender registry and be liable if an "offender" were allowed to make a comment on any subject whatsoever.
Nice of the Journal
Why is it we suddenly see a flurry of reports that Paul might do well in Iowa and NH?
Betting on two horses
As a reporter you wouldnt want to be on the wrong side of the fence when the shit hits the fan about "censorship". If i worked at Faux i would be looking for a new job to save face.
"No visas for people from terrorist nations"
-- Ron Paul, presidential TV add on immigration.
Because he will. :)
Because he will. :)

Articles and comments from WSJ. A good following for RP and this comment below was one of the best. Surprising for a News Corp publication but at the same time they did not go out of their way to make the Dec 16 $6 front page. I suppose they too are hedging.
"The American People are once again given scant choices when it comes to another election; in fact, we only have one choice among the cadre of regurgitated spectacle of candidates presented by the Entrenchment Political Apparatus of the Republican and Democratic Parties and that choice is Ron Paul. Each party have had their respective turns at the ruination of this Country for decades with no solutions to the problems that they themselves have caused; every four years we have been given choices that amount to no choice and their staged production continues to recycle the same type of candidate time and time again.
The Entrenchment Parasitic Ticks from both political parties have spent the last 60 or so years sucking the Life Blood from this Nation and have asked the People to keep smiling and supporting their feckless leadership decision-makers. While they present different Actors, the screenplay is the same. Each election they get on their stage, their lines are well-rehearsed and their emotional plea to the voters rings out with a façade of sincerity, they cry out their empty promises and give no real answers to real issues faced by this Nation. Every four years this nation is swung to the Republicans or the Democrats, all hoping that this time it will be different, but it never is, it is always the same because the agendas are always the same. They care nothing for the People of this Country and at times, witnessed by the folly of their legislations, it appears that they care little for the Country itself.
Until I read Ron Paul’s book: A Foreign Policy of Freedom, I had no idea just how twisted our government really was. Ron Paul has proven to be a voice of clarity in a mass of confusion, misjudgment, miscalculation and mismanagement in government. His writings and knowledge of what is considered by many to be esoteric subjects like monetary policy, economics and the misapplication of a misdirected and broadly applied foreign policy is absolutely astounding and right on target. Ron Paul has correctly interpreted the consequences of these government’s actions time and time again. He predicted how the events would unfold years before they did and he was correct in his predictions.
On numerous occasions, Ron Paul stood before the House of Representatives speaking out about the total lack of reason behind many, if not all of our foreign policies. He stated correctly that on most occasions this country has aided, armed, trained and entered into treaties with both sides of a conflict. He is correct when he states that this country has such an unfocused and broadly applied foreign policy that we fail to determine if our actions are actually in our Nations true best interest. In essence, we have no foreign policy, just a conglomeration of miscalculations that tend to bite us in the ass more times than it actually provides us with security or solutions. We have spent decades and billions upon billions of dollars on programs, policies and decisions that have failed to provide us with any real solutions.
Ron Paul understands that America is not the Social Worker of the World any more than we are the Policemen of the World. Most, if not all of our foreign policy actions have not only proved feckless, but many times harmful to the actual security interests of the American People and this Nation. It is time that we returned rational thought to this government, restrained by a reality that few politicians on either side of the political spectrum grasp.
Ron Paul is the only candidate that understands most of the issues this nation faces, it appears he is the only candidate that has an understanding of monetary mechanics, foreign policy and domestic policy. The rest are simpletons who appear to lack understanding of the concepts that will affect this Nation and its People in ways that we would rather not experience. Yet, those candidates happily promote their empty and unrealistic promises and their gullible supporters seem eager to consume their regurgitated tripe.
I have been a successful businessman for several decades, I have seen these political hacks of special interests and corporate darlings decimate this Nations economy and manufacturing base. They have continued to drive the workingman and woman of this Country into a slow road to being nothing more than productive serfs. I have witnessed the Administrations of 11 Presidents in this country, each have given this Nation precious little in the way of real leadership or common-sense decision-making. Ron Paul is that voice of common sense and a principled intellect beyond reproach. IT IS TIME TO PUT AMERICA AND AMERICANS FIRST-VOTE RON PAUL FOR A REAL CHANGE!!!!!

My Husband has been involved in the Republican party here for years, been a delegate twice, contributed numerous times to the Republican party, voted in the last two primaries and presidential elections - but, NEVER answer our land line phone - we may have missed pollsters several times. (If a friend or family member leaves a message, we call them back.)
I on the other hand am a first time voter - as the article also talks about this which does not give accurate poll results.
I resemble that, but I'm worse...
Once, in the late 1980s, a political pollster called me at suppertime. They wanted my opinion. I told them it was my opinion they shouldn't call me when I'm in the mood to eat. I was also annoyed that I wasn't offered money for it, if my opinion was so-valuable. I began to dislike and distrust political pollsters. I fail to see why they don't want to pay me for my time, if not my opinion, but they persistently expect a free lunch from me, so I don't answer the landline. Ever.
Then along came the internet. Back in the early '90s, there was no "Gambling911.com" to gather offshore Presidential odds, so I did it. I did it because I thought they were accurate and interesting, and because the bookies don't call me up at suppertime, and instead leave me the hell alone. Also, if I ever dare to bet, the bookies put a real monetary value on my political opinions. I'm happy these days, because now gambling911 and other sites do the work of getting the overseas odds to US citizens.

PS Ron Paul (via me!) won yesterday at poker -- time for the gambling-enhanced money-bomb!! :)
